So she can't damage the Demon King then, given that 20 Str + Silver Sword is 33 Atk and he has 35 Def. (Never mind the difficulty of RNG abusing or Energy Ring farming to get her Str that high.)

So, I was busy yesterday. And by "busy" I mean "I sat on my ass playing Dragon Age all night." Did Redcliffe, and by extension the mage tower since that's the "right" way to complete the subplot. I did view the alternate methods first and opted not to take them because it wound up in party members getting pissed off at me, which I'm neurotic about allowing even though it's easily offset by strategic bribery. Kill 'em all method was pretty hardcore. Telling a little kid "We have to kill you for the greater good. It's going to hurt, so suck it up and take it like a man." ....Yeah. Strangely, even the good characters preferred me to do that over letting his mom sacrifice herself. Party reactions are weird sometimes.

On that note, Morrigan needs to stop getting pissed off when I help people. Seriously woman, have some perspective here. I need a dialogue option that says "These people are useful to me and that makes it exploitation, not charity." Kind of wished I'd kept her with me in the mage tower just to see what her nightmare would've looked like. But it was obvious that her approval would've kept going down as I kept helping the Circle, so I switched her out for Wynne--who instantly became invaluable in combat just by being the only healer. My standard party seems to be her, Sten, and either Morrigan or Lelianna in archer mode. As much as I like Alistair, he's just outclassed as a melee fighter by Sten and the MC. Other stuff...hmm:

-Jowan's outfit was totally ganked from Thunder in Big Trouble in Little China.

-I killed the elf assassin rather than recruiting him. Doing the latter pissed people off (I often view all the options when decisions like this come up just to see the different reactions) and I have more than enough PCs anyway.

-Does Lothering stay locked out forever once the Blight gets there? I still had to go there to track down some dude for the Irregulars.

Wasn't really planning on playing that long, but I was aiming to knock out one full sidequest and it just...kept...going. Not too many opportunities for creative self-aggrandizement in either section, sadly. I am hitting the elves next, hopefully I can up the jerkass quotient more there.

Yes, once you leave Lothering you can't return.

Morrigan doesn't actually get mad at you most times if you solve quests in self-serving methods. Since I am usually looking for any way to make cash she likes me enough to let me make out with her in front of Alister.

Speaking of which, Alister is a tank more than a melee fighter.

I dunno, I feel like the four-map marathon chapter (complete with "lord is rescuing dead weight" second half) and Ashnard put FE9 above anything in FE8, but on the other hand I suppose that the game does specifically hand you one character that can with any sort of healing easily handle Ashnard.
That is, I think C17? in FE9 is a bit nastier than C... 16?  the desert map in FE8, and Ashnard > Demon King, but really it's a sissy slap fight so hey.

I also thought that FE9 was harder. Early on the GBA FEs may be harder, but the enemies in 9 seemed to keep up with the party better. IIRC by endgame of FE9 enemies still had a decent chance to hit my units and they usually wouldn't get one rounded except by my very best units wielding my best weapons. I can't say the same about FE7+8.

Are you talking about NM or HM Ashnard? NM Ashnard deserves absolutely no respect ever, he can't move and the game hands you a PC who solos him. He is quite possibly worse than the Demon King and I don't say that lightly.

I dunno, the marathon map didn't give me much problems even on my challenge. The lord is dead weight by the end, but those two maps are a survival map and a map in which you have TIBARN. Never mind that the rest of your army is probably mostly promoted and the enemies there are still pretty bad.

Dude: Yeah, FE9 has better individual enemies, although I found I could still generally one-round them with the better PCs. The problem is that FE9 has like half as many enemies as FE7-8, so they just can't put up the same threat.

I played HM and one-rounded almost everything but dragons with a lot of my awesome characters :D

I demand rewards at every opportunity (need top-shelf gear so bad), so she's pretty happy with me anyway. Ultimately only matters for the stat-boosts she gets from high approval though, since I'm running a female MC. Apparently Leliana swings both ways, so clearly I should hit that instead.

Wild ARMs of Oz - So, I beat a florist witch and she was actually a nice girl. Whoops. Flora really was not bad at all for a first boss fight (I suspect she was capable of some really nasty MT one-rounding on half the party through two turns if, say, she used her focus spell, then MT magic x2, and she has a solid ST 2HKO and some buffing. The support fails at life (lol ohkoed by Strawman's physical), but the fight itself was passable, if highly controllable. Now, I have access to THE JUNGLES OF OZ waitaminute Oz had jungles? Yeah, this is a slight trainwreck.

Current character evaluations:

Dorothy - Is badass. She's gotten the best skillset stuff so far: near-full healing even on Tin Man HP, solidly accurate GT sleep (something like 70%? Pretty useful for randoms, regardless) and MT speed buffing are all great tools, and she has both the MP and the speed to make use of it, along with game-best magic. Evade is also decent, and that's a noticeable stat in this game. Game-worst HP and bad defense make her not completely mindlessly retarded, but with the combo of second-best speed, 1x ratio and awesome skillset, it's pretty obvious who the MVP so far is. Excels at randoms with the easy multi-acting and has non-gameworst Strength, so she's basically game-best damage if she goes all-out physicalling anyway. Also accurate, which is relevant.

Strawman - Second-best PC by virtue of game-best speed and 1x ratio by default. Gnaw's defense down effect isn't great, but I use it on bosses anyway, and First Wind is sorta neat for giving someone initiative if you need. Like Dorothy, he pulls out a higher damage output than the other PCs if he goes straight for full physicals, and uses that often due to the lacking skillset so far. Game-best accuracy and evade along with the speed, which is cool, but second-worst HP and game-worst defense make him pretty frail. The speed also makes him an excellent back-up healer with consumables.

Lion - LVP. Fairly durable, but 2x ratio means he gets two actions a round at most. Being below average speed and not very accurate, along with a vaguely worthless skillset, doesn't help. I got mileage of his magic evade buffer on the Flora fight since she's obviously a mage, which is sorta weird, but otherwise, I just had him as padding for the fight, and I almost never bother with him on randoms.

Tin Man - 3x ratio. You get two actions -total- in a round if you use him. This blows. He's also a slug and actually inaccurate. However, he's a tank and the physically-based niche stuff has been mostly going to him - a GT physical and a perfect accuracy attack that outdamages his basic physical as earlygame skills doesn't hurt, especially given how he either GT 2HKOs or OHKOs grunts with the area attack. His damage is also enough to keep up with four Dorothy attacks too, for instance (so is Lion's physical x2, but that's even more commitment: you can slap a Dorothy/Strawman turn in addition to Tin Man's turn, averaging more damage and off better speed, and you'll be able to use some actually non-crappy skillset stuff that way, particularly if you use Dorothy). Still has to come to his own, but he's not the LVP I thought he'd be when he joined up.

SRWW replay: Finished. What the hell, I'll throw in some unit comments.

Mazinkaiser (KS): I was expecting Turbo Smasher Punch to be chainable, given the more lenient (C) mechanics in W. I was *not* expecting it to be completely free when Mazinger rocket punches have historically cost EN. So now one of the tankiest, hardest hitting mechs in the game also has basically infinite resources on both its slugfesting weapon, that can hit multiple targets, and a long range attack (99 ammo for Giganto Missle). Um. I'm at a loss for words.

Great Mazinger: I'd say it's a fair bit better than the J incarnation simply because it joins in the stronger blue form, rather than being stuck with the significantly weaker black one for a long period of time. Still failed to impress relatively speaking against W's (frankly killer) unit lineup, but Final Dynamic Special justified its roster spot.

Shin Getter: Benefits from BP specialization. Getter-1's not that great at either dodging or tanking without really heavy investment, but you can invest most of Hayato's BP into evade to make Getter-2 a killer dodger against grunts without sacrificing Ryouma's immense boss killing power. Getter-3's not bad at fighting but suffers from low base move so I didn't use it much.

Boss Borot: Basically the J version, but not quite as good because the competition is so much better. Tenryujin really stands out as another repair/resupply unit that can fight quite well, which hurts Boss's niche. The SP is still really nice (and infinite for two of the pilots if you're willing to glitch abuse), and the animations are still amusing.

Tekkaman Blade: What was Banpresto thinking when they gave Blade Soul *and* two 7000 base power combination attacks? The Astray and SEED units have to settle for 5500-5900 power base moves to use with Soul, and they certainly don't lack for boss-killing power. Double (Reactor) Voltekka + Soul is just overkill.

As a trivia point, I just realized this playthrough that Tekka Lance has two completely different dynamic kill animations, both only available after Blaster Mode becomes available. Is this the only move in the game with two DKs?

Tekkaman Aki: Well, she's basically free if you upgraded Blade already, which is really good. Not great on base firepower, but with carryover upgrades it's good enough, and she gives Blade lover damage bonus for even higher numbers. Ironically despite being pure melee she actually has better range than the other Tekkaman Blade II units at base will.

Tekkaman Sommer/Vesna: A bit disappointing given my high expectations for the full Tekkaman squad; 4000 base power for Voltekka isn't that great, and they have nothing better than range 3 otherwise so enemies will snipe at them all the time. Their MAPs have crap range so they're barely usable as well. The combination attacks with each other and also with Hiver probably save their value, as they can do lots of damage to bosses at least. Subpilots... Sommer's was pretty good, with Bless/Cheer/Accel, but Vesna's had a bunch of stuff that I didn't really use besides Strike, and lack of Accel was annoying compared to the other Tekkaman units.

Tekkaman Hiver: Imagine a MAP attack like Cyflash, except that instead of being located around the unit it could be targetted anywhere within EIGHT tiles in any distance. Now make the MAP more than 33% stronger, benefit more from upgrade, and cost significantly less to upgrade... even though the upgrades are applied to every weapon on the unit, instead of just the MAP itself.

That's what Reactor Voltekka MAP is like, hands down the best MAP attack in the game, maybe in SRW history (it's not the strongest, but it's certainly the most user friendly). Hiver still has Sommer and Vesna's issues with range and mediocre weaponry at low will levels, but the MAP attack is so overpowered it singlehandedly makes her one of the best units in the game. The 7000 power combination attack with Blade is just gravy, really.

Tekkaman Dead: Better than I had expected; he has the ranged weapon that the other TB2 units lack, and a stronger Voltekka than any of them except Hiver. Oh, and he inherits upgrades from Blade too for no discernable rason. Still felt sorta like space filler, but that just might be the rest of my team's brokeness making him look less impressive.

Tekkaman Rapier: Joins so late she's basically irrelevant; being pathsplit just adds insult to injury. Still, she's yet another Tekkaman PC who is basically free if you invested in Blade already, so there's no harm in using her and adding a third shot of 7000 base power Voltekka combo attack at the game.

Valguard/Valzacard: Let's just say that replays make it very, very clear why Valor and Soul were not meant to be stacked. The damage cap should not be this easy to hit, ever.

Well I know in SRW Alpha Gaiden, Mazinkaiser's Turbo Smasher Punch was free. Lack of chain mechanics back then though.

...Speaking of damage caps, there's a video on YouTube of someone dealing over 117000 (IIRC) damage in Alpha 3.

Also, thanks for the evaluations, I'd been really curious about the game and I haven't found a lot of comments on it outside of the most basic battle system summaries.

Madou Monogatari.

Antiphona have no visable damage mechanic and use a heart slot as hp... and there is no clear cut value on how you can reduce one, and the best way to tell how effective your attacks are from the comments the characters make while attacking.

If Zevran also likes you, you can have a four-way. A male PC with high Leliana marks can have a three-way. Apparently three-ways require at least one dude in Dragon Age, which as I learned from an ex-girlfriend is not always the case.

Phantasy Star Universe- Chapter Seven. Too many cliches. Well applies to the "story" overall so far really. Chapter Eight, just started. Oh and I've unlocked extra mode. Character creations ahoy in the future (well I unlocked extra mode a while ago but didn't want to let it suck away my life at that point) I'm just messing around preparing for new missions in story mode. I have a lot of monies and yet will be skint by the time I've restocked on photon charges and bought as many new weapons and spells as I need and thus Ethan probably won't be getting any new clothes still. He'll just have to keep running around in his underwear. Interesting feature that >_>

(his default clothes include hideous green things)

I think I'm near the end of story mode~

Lineup was VS (Me)/Prophet/Kimahri Phantom Lancer vs Netherdrake/Demon Witch/Ursa Warrior.

At first we were getting our asses kicked, most of our towers up to the last one were being pushed and we constantly held them back by virtue of our towers being there. At once we were able to find a way to counter their attack, that is, to isolate them one by one by using Prophet's Sprout. Through the Nether Swap of mine, I could collect stragglers. The Demon Witch's usefulness was wasted on my spell resistance, so I was really amazed that although the Prophet and I kept feeding the Phantom Lancer was able to farm and carry us on to victory. It was the best victory I've had in a while, so I'm happy.
