Exdeath has been refer to a the "teacher" by the fans due to him being the exp farm of the game.
As we all know, Exdeath's AI is PATHETIC in Jp. version. A lv.100 can be easily killed by a level 1 character due to its stupidity... thsu he is the perfetc target to grind for EXP. Result, most character gain there levels by beating up Exdeath thus they are all his "students".
So, it is just mocking him... until a turn of event. As after a while, Exdeath's copunter game was discover to be quite brutal and effective and is atcualy a high tier character. He then make this transition from a mocked tree in a well respected character quickly attracts attention and hype. And now people are calling him "teacher" out of respect.

Ah, ok, that makes sense.

Though, I'd think the term "Punching Bag" would be more applicable there!

Exdeath's AI in the English version has indeed been improved. He still sucks, mind, and makes the best dummy to beat up on for EXP but, well...he does more than Teleport and occassional Almagests/Grand Crosses now. He'll actually use his counters, even High Guard (no sure about Omni Guard.) He'll try to use Black Hole if you're far away sometimes, and I've even seen him attempt Reaper Sword (...why, I don't know; Reaper Sword sucks when its not a counter.)

also, Teleporting itself is a lot faster, and causes Stagger, so it puts Exdeath into a neutral position, instead of constantly getting him countered and eating crits in the face.
