NotMiki: I see. That's amusing. But eh, I'll take what good can be reaped.

Note that most of the characterisation of Deadpool was done after Liefield no longer had anything to do with him and artists/writers have used Deadpool and his Deadpoolness to even insult Liefield.

Also note the total lack of grip on the "gun"(barrel) Shatterstar has (attached) on the top of his hand.  Also note the massive shittiness of said gun in general.  Also note how many lines it takes to draw a single face.

Plus HEADGEAR.

Fabian Nicieza was the other person who created Deadpool, and he was a guy who really got the zeitgeist of comics in the early '90s.  His run on X-Force (#1-43, after which you would be well advised to stop reading) remains the quintessential superhero comic experience to me.  Nicieza did the first Deadpool limited series, which firmly established the character's voice, though it wasn't until the ongoing series that things got completely unserious.

He also wrote the third Gambit series, where they give him unlimited godlike powers as a way of saying "DO YOU SEE HOW DUMB THIS IS?"

Eh, except the last few issues, which his name was on but was basically written by an editor due to a sudden burst of oversight.

I don't have a huge beef with the plot of that series, but I remember some of the specific action and dialog being groan-worthy.

That said, if as you assert the plot is essentially a cautionary tale about bad plots (I haven't read the thing, just 4 or 5 scattered issues) then it's completely worthless.  Every once in a while, and by that I mean pretty much all the time, writers come to comics with the idea that comics are beneath them, that they're smarter than the other schlubs writing this stuff, and that they should make a story as a point, as opposed to as a story.  You know who these people are because when they adopt this mindset their writing is absolute shit.  The result, usually, is a comic which fluctuates seemingly at random between taking itself seriously and not.  See: Warren Ellis' run on X-Force, for example.

It's not so general, actually. The overarching story in the second half of the book (the New Sun) is basically a dig at how the Phoenix-type characters are always either all-powerful (which Gambit becomes), evil (which alt-Gambit is), or dead (which Gambit becomes when his dad gets killed in the past, but solves by travelling through time with his afore-mentioned all-powerfulness). Before that, though, it's all capers and larceny and awesome.

It's how I've always read it, anyway.

I'll take your word for it.  The Phoenix saga always kinda struck me as an odd thing to generate the hate and angst it did.  Jean Gray only died and came back twice (until relatively recently), but it became rooted in the mythos that it was some kind of affront to continuity and dramatic storytelling, as if the number of times it was recounted somehow magnified the crassness of resurrecting a popular character.  I mean, comic books, people.  "Dying" and coming back is as natural as spandex and improper anatomy.

It's not the Phoenix saga that people have a problem with. It's the fact they didn't end the character there, even though her continued existence makes imposing any sense of suspense to be nigh-impossible and it was a great story to go out on.

So basically, everything AFTER that.

Objection.  Nextwave is hot and we both know it.  Although this is just the exception that proves the point, which is the whole reason for the story.

Or something.
