2009 NFL season: Poor Yakumo.
« on: February 28, 2009, 06:08:44 PM »
Blah blah news, but the big story right now: That speculation from a few days ago was correct. Matt Cassel was just traded to Kansas City.

The Patriots are about to make out like bandits.

Oh yeah, Haynesworth got a 100 dollar contract and Dawkins was signed by the Broncos.

Assuming his knees don't explode, that was a nice pickup for the Bucs.

Vrabel+Cassell was traded for KC's second rounder. *Whistles* Nice deal for KC, it looks like.

Yeah, what the hell?  Talk about giving away the farm.

EDIT: a little analysis:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/2009/02/trade_compensat.html

Upshot: due to his high price tag plus market conditions, there may not have been as much of a market for Cassel as many believed.  I think if that is the case, the Pats should possibly have held out longer before trading him, but maybe they thought it was better to clear that cap space early on.

Well if the Packers are gonna go to the 3-4 they had better find a beefy nose tackle.

Best NFL news ever.

Who picks him up, I wonder? The Browns, desperate for anything that looks like talent? The Broncos, as part of the "blow up the entire goddamn team, and then pee on the ashes" strategy they seem to like so much this year? The Bengals, because it would be the funniest thing in human history? I can't wait.

Ryan Pickett's tough enough to play NT, just has no time in the 3-4 and is in a contract year. BJ Raji's the best NT in the draft, I bet the Packers pick him up. They also badly need a 3-4 end with Jolly's suspension and him being in a contract year as well.

Cinci signs J.T. O'Sullivan. Like they need someone who can throw INTs better than Palmer?

I wanted to believe in O'Suillivan last year. It was a great story with how he got picked up by San Fran. Too bad he completely fouled it up by not doing very well.

"Many" meaning "particularly stupid Patriots fans." It was obvious to anyone who passed fourth-grade math that the Pats could afford to actually pay Cassel a franchise contract, which meant they weren't exactly negotiating from strength. They're lucky they got such a high pick, IMO.

The wildcard there was Brady's recovery. If his knee was really fucked up, the Patriots may have had no choice but to hold onto him. It gave them some strength, and several teams (KC, Detroit) had nothing at QB.

I don't think it's entirely unfounded.  Cassel's a decent QB.  If your organization is weak at QB, you're not exactly in a strong trading position either.  So the Pats couldn't afford to keep him, but they might justifiably have expected that there was a market (and if the Broncos had been less coy, apparently there would have been.)

Oh, there was, but not at a price where the second pick in the second round is a disappointment. They were pretty much assured to be able to move him, but the idea that they'd get high or multiple first-rounders was pie-in-the-sky.

I think that disappointment was more about losing Vrabel in the deal as well.  I'm still not convinced that was necessary to make a trade happen, and consensus in Boston is the Pats are weaker without him (although, like any consensus in Boston regarding the Pats, this one ends with 'Belichick is always right and if we think he's wrong we're just not seeing the big picture').

I bet that was cap related. Vrabel is getting up there and didn't play his best football last year. Think it's a really good pickup for KC, especially since they're switching to a 3-4.

Edit: Belicheck spoke about this today. Here's the rotoworld blub.

Bill Belichick, speaking on WEEI in Boston, said he never received an offer for a first- and third-round pick for Matt Cassel.
"They never made that offer to me," Belichick said, indicating there were no official late offers in the Cassel dealing. Without getting too specific, Belichick said he was in contact with multiple teams after Cassel signed his franchise tender and he took the best offer he got. He also indicated that the complexities of a three-way trade (presumably including Jay Cutler) could have taken a long time to play out, largely because it would have been contingent on new contracts. Reading between the lines, it seemed like the Patriots didn't have a firm offer or the patience to wait for one because they needed cap relief.

Sounds about right.  Apparently the Broncos only got serious after Vrabel was traded, by which point it was too late.

By three-way trade they probably meant with the Lions, who were apparently after Cutler.

I misspoke a bit about Vrabel.  There's no consensus as to whether he was worth the cap space (which seems to have been the issue, yes), but there is a consensus that he's got some years of good football left in him and that it's a shame to see him go.
