DLCon 4: Games
« on: March 13, 2009, 01:30:50 PM »
Meeple said he was going to do this, but I think he forgot. So I'll do it for him!

Use this topic to list what games you plan to bring[whether it be video or TCG or board game. Someone BETTER bring A2A.]

Myself, I'll be bringing almost every[no last blades, no SF Alphas :<] notable fighting game under the sun + SRWs + some random action games[more GOD HAND never hurt anyone.], along with a bevvy of misc. things on portable. Expect lots of Dissidia madness maybe?

I also have some MtG cards still around, but I have not played the game in a while and I lost my old deck, so I'd probably fail it up pretty bad :F

Back on the topic of fighting games... I've talked about it in chat many times in the past few months, and now I will lay it all out right here.

THE RPGDL FIGHTING GAME TOURNAMENT ROUND 2!

That's right, just because CapK isn't going and just because we didn't have one last year doesn't mean I won't get this rolling. It'll be modeled in a style similar to the original one[though I still need people to confirm one or two details].

The idea is that there are 5 games[4 listed, 1 kept a secret. And yes, the secret one actually will be a fighting game this time] and we all hold  single elimination[that's how it was in DLC2 right? double elim would take too long with a good amount of people there.] tournaments for each. Whoever has the most tournaments won by the end wins first prize, along with some runner-up prizes. Prizes will be handled by Gatewalker. They are so secret, even I don't know what they are!

The games we will have are[updated March 18th]:

Street Fighter 4[duh]
Blazblue[If this is not out by then, which I highly doubt, we'll use GGXX Accent Core Plus instead.]
Super Smash Brothers Brawl[duh]
Soul Calibur 4[need a 3D rep somewhere + has some fans in this group, seems like a smart choice.]
SEKRIT[will be a 2D fighter]

There's no price to sign up, and it'll all be in good fun. Sign up now! You can confirm now or even right at the con if you want.

The tourney will take place on August 1st[IE the third day of the con]. On July 31st, I will show the games that will be in the tourney and at least explain the basics to anyone who doesn't know them. I think it'd make things a bit more fun for everyone if we did that >_>;

Presuming I come, at a minimum my laptop will be with me, as well as A2A if needed.

Though, if I -am- coming, I'm packing light, so not much more than that will be with me.

Things I have at my house include the following:

Clue (considering the popularity of the movie, I think this is worth mentioning)

PS2 with a crap load of games; for multiplayer stuff...uhh...CvS2, that's about it.  yes, I have DMC1/3 if we want to show case that (again), no, I do not have DMC2, if you want to make people suffer <.<

XBox360, at the moment, I only have SC4 for multiplayer stuff; I plan on getting more.

Wii, with Brawl.

That's about it for relevant stuff, I guess.

Well, my basement has crap like Air Hockey, Pool, and Ping Pong, so I guess that's worth noting!

Alright, just as a heads up, here is every fighting game I intend on bringing to DLC4, in case anyone is curious.

Some of these may or may not be out by the time DLC4 rolls around, so if I don't have them, well. >_>

Street Fighter IV
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix
Vampire: The Darkstalkers Collection[JP only PS2 compilation of every DS game. I don't know how arcade perfect it is or not but it's better'n the other ports >_>;]
The King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match
The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match
The King of Fighters Maximum Impact Regulation A[like MI2 except MORE RIDICULOUS]
The King of Fighters XII
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core
Blazblue
Sengoku Basara X[see below]
Hokuto no Ken[because it is pure and utter lollerskates]
Melty Blood Actress Again?[hope it comes out by then]
Fate: Unlimited Codes[for lols with Alex/Sage/Yak/any others who played FSN]
Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram[hey at least Shale will play it]

I will also have a bunch of Musou games and various other random action games. We won't be starved, needless to say >_>;

Also, list is subject to change, as a forewarning.

I hate to double post so soon, but I need this to be on a new post.

THE SOONER EVERYONE SIGNS UP FOR THE TOURNEY, THE BETTER. Getting the brackets/projected times out of the way before going to the con would help it run a lot smoother.

I can bring stuff, although nothing I've brought has ever been played in the previous 3 DLCons because I'm very complacent >_>

On the tournament thing: the idea is to encourage as many people as possible to participate, as it is pretty fun; lots of people don't know what they're doing, but that's part of the fun.  Last time we just got people to sign up right as we were starting, and just random-bracketed, which works fine.

On the games in the tournament...ehh, not that fond of the current gamelist.  The sum total of games on there I have played is...1, and this is probably pretty common since last I checked quite a few people in the DL don't have a 360/PS3.  Actually, I'd recommend replacing one of those games with Touhou: Phantasmagoria of Flower View--yeah it's not a fighting game, but it uses the standard fighting game structure (2 lives, best of 3, rounds are fairly short), and it wouldn't surprise me if more people in this group play PoFV than...any fighting game that doesn't have "Smash" in the title >_>

No, Sage. That's edit. Not quote. Misclicks are fun. At least I got the post back by hitting back.

Only if there's demand.

To explain further, I'm trying to make sure there aren't repeat games from last tourney :/ It's a new age with new fighters, why not play them?

Ehhhh, the fighting games list there is pretty good for people who haven't played any, though. SF4 uses pretty standard commands, SC4 is buttonmashy and Brawl is...well, Brawl. KoF's the only one really arcaneish in any way, and while there's possibly a better game to put there...eh. Can't think of one that's not already represented by a series.

In a way, it's good to keep to games few have played, but are intuitive. Makes the whole thing involve less slaughters.

On the related note of PoFV, good god man. Alex has a good argument for the best western PoFV player, and the only people I don't trash myself that I've played are Alex and Laggy. The skill gap there is crushing, that wouldn't be that fun for a majority of people.

I have a modded PS2 I can bring, as always, and should be able to supply Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus (take that, Xer!) along with things that have next-gen sequels so people probably won't care about them (SC, etc).

I'm in for the tourney, of course.

I haven't heard of 6 of those games, and 4 KoFs? It would probably make a bit more sense to throw in representatives of other series that a number of people might have actually played because with games that are mysteries to everyone, it could just come down to who randomly picks a better character or who randomly stumbles across how to do the better special moves.

In a way, it's good to keep to games few have played, but are intuitive. Makes the whole thing involve less slaughters.
Is it?  Consider VF4:E--It's one of the most intuitive fighters I've seen (you have three buttons: kick, punch, and block.  You can attack high medium, or low.  Grabs hit people that are blocking, but don't work on people who are attacking).  And like you suggested, few had played it (like...only me, and a couple of people who'd forgotten everything they ever learned about it).  Yet it was arguably the least successful game last tournament (as much as I hate to admit it).

Now consider SSBM--about six or seven people were pretty into it, with a fairly crushing skill gap.  This included Alex, as the veteran tournament player, and Zenny, as someone who had completely dominated the practice rounds.  Yet neither Alex nor Zenny were even in the finals; furthermore, the final few rounds of SSBM seemed to be considered by most to be the climax of the tournament.

Overall I'm not reeeally feeling the "lets pick all games we don't know, instead of a game that several of us are really into" argument.  For that matter, I also doubt PoFV is a foregone conclusion, the same way SSBM 07 didn't go as predicted.  I mean, back before I knew any of the PoFV mechanics (like, I never used charge or focus) I was still able to take a game off of Laggy through pure dodge hax.  >_>

VF4 is SO NOT intuitive. Amount of buttons has little to do with it.

It is also very unexcting and dry, making it a bad spectator game. Nothing flashy, nothing original.

VF4 is SO NOT intuitive. Amount of buttons has little to do with it.
It's intuitive in the sense that you can learn what you did wrong fairly quickly.  Compare to Soul Calibur II...

VF4: If you grab and they're punching, you fail the grab.  Intuitive.
SC2: If you grab and they're pushing a button that's the same button you used in the grab, you fail...was it 50% of the time?  I can't even remember.

SC2: I've had someone spam the same move against me for an entire match...and then two more matches after that, and I really couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do against it.  I've known others to voice similar complaints about SC2.
VF4: I just...can't see the above scenario happening...ever in VF4.  If you know a move is coming, you block it, and then punch them in the face now that they're close.

Yeah, there's stuff to learn in VF4, but I can't think of any stone wall "learn to do X before playing or die".

This I'll agree with.

Except it did happen in VF4 in the tournament. In multiple matches. I think it's just a product of being new to a fighting game. Once you know all the controls you know the list of things you need to do to defend against something, until you do and are used to them, you may miss one.

In the case of SC, there's nothing that can be spammed that can't be defeated by one of sidestepping, high block, or low block, which doesn't seem especially noob-unfriendly by fighting game standards.

Appropriate attack countering throw is 100%, by the way. Although honestly the best way to counter throws in SC, like in most games, is to just not be hit by them - everything else has more range pretty much. Just like most fighting games.

Anyway I've praised SC for its intuitiveness myself, and will stand by that. Fundamentally intuitiveness of a fighting game varies by person, but... well, there's a reason that SC and Smash are more played than other fighters in the DL. (Okay, they are respectively pretty and feature Nintendo characters, but even so. <_<)

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.

Err...no.

Blocking the move was never the problem.  It's "okay, I've blocked the move, now I should be able to do something to punish the move...oh wait, I'm not close enough, and if I try to move forward I get hit by the next spam of the same move."

It's a newbie unfriendly balance issue I've seen in a few fighting games.  Another one that jumps to mind is MvC2's Iceman, who could repeatedly spam an ice ball move to lock newer players in a corner.  Yes: there was a dash move that could go under the ice ball, but players who didn't know about the dash couldn't move fast enough to get out of the corner.

Throwing in a vote for BlazBlue or Guilty Gear in the tournament because they are hella pretty and fun to watch.

Special love for BlazBlue as I'm not a fighting game vet and I found it incredibly easy to pick up on my first try.

I'm just not sure if it will be out in America by the time this con rolls around...

Well, if not, maybe I can pick up a copy here and bring my Japanese 360.

Having no idea what this blazblue discussion was, I looked it up; may as well post the stuff I searched.

Spiritual successor to guilty gear; sample fight:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pynLTbqXfmc

If we're choosing based on prettiness alone (which...sure, makes sense to have one game chosen like that) then yeah, I'd say it's prettier than what I've seen of KoF12:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5Ebodm0vFs

On the release date; wikipedia says "summer 2009" (ambiguous).  GameFAQs has "Q2 2009", which means April-June (should be in time).

That it is the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear is why I did not immediately put it on the list. GG is infamously hard.

And... it's a different kind of pretty than KoF12. KoF12 has bigger sprites and a lot more frames of animation, Blazblue has wacky ArcSys sense of style and char designs.
