Last week (two weeks ago? My sense of time is fucked), two really good animes came to a close, and you should watch both of them.
Daily Lives of High School Boys:
At times, painfully hilarious, one of the few things I've seen that, at a few rare points, actually made my sides hurt. A cast of rich and likable characters, including the boring protagonist that slowly got written out of his own anime. Over-the-top voice acting, which you can tell despite it being another language and one I don't personally speak. Some of the jokes you can see coming, and they STILL make you laugh just because of the execution. The best part of the show is how no one is self-assured at ALL. That's how you KNOW it's an authentic high school experience.
and
Chihayafuru:
A slice of life anime about an esoteric card game that basically can only be played in Japan because it revolves around Japanese poetry. Despite the painfully dry subject matter, the actual story has a shocking amount of heart and is visualized lovingly. Mostly it's just a compelling narrative, but at times it can be very funny in its own right.
First revolving around a girl and two boys in her gradeschool class, there's a time jump and the girl puts together a club for her esoteric card game and gets some other members to join. Happily, the other members become important to the cast and not just "meh" additions without souls---they are just as important characters as the ones already established.
Simply an excellent anime if you're feeling mellow. More heart than many shows have combined.
