So yeah I woke up early this morning and finished it.  Ending is a bit more like his other work than I expected, but that is fine.  I do enjoy how he always has such a positive message hidden under all the mind fuck.  Yeah I can see why you would really like Episode 10 Sopko.  There is slight shades of FLCL in there even (with the way it plays with the fourth wall and whatnot)

Paranoia Agent - Fucking watch this.

Oh yeah something I forgot to ask about Paranoia Agent.  Specifically for Sopko I guess since he is the worlds biggest Kon fan ever.

So the guys in episode 9 that are constantly trying to kill themselves are already dead right?  Never gets overtly stated, but it is certainly what everything seems to imply to me.

Edit - Fuck it, doing size shit with javascript and images turned off is to much fucking effort.

Yeah; the guy who jumped in front of the train and walked off was supposed to make that explicit, I think.

Random weird shit happening in Paranoia isn't really explicit, either is people just kind of ignoring everyone else, but yeah bits and pieces like that (girls taking photo near the end of the episode for example) kind of is what I meant.

Well, not explicit, but you know what I meant.

I still need to watch the rest of that show.  I only caught the first few episodes and then that one.  Go go gadget piracy I guess.

Macross F- Awesome, just awesome, this final episode is just bloody shiny and the cinematic is really nice. No, the cinematic has been really well done ever since the Sheryl is dying arc, her final few stages are just gorgeous. Yeah, I am so picking up the high definition of the episodes now, watching them in RMVB does not justify the prettiness.

Probably should have posted something here sooner, but blarg I am late with mega posts, or something.

Anyways, back in August I got plunked down in a video room at a con for two days in order to make sure no one got rowdy or walked off with stuff they shouldn't.  Oh, and also to make slight adjustments to schedule if the guy in charge fucked up scheduling or we hit something soul scarringly bad.  Oddly enough, both came up.  Anyways, just my thoughts on the first few episodes.

Emma - This is where I came in.  Seems ok, a predictable enough romance that will inevitably involve two people from different classes finding a way to make their love work despite several comedic differences getting in the way.  Nothing exciting, but not overly offensive.

Maburaho - Or whatever it's called.  Something about a world where everyone can only use magic so many times, and this one guy who is otherwise useless has some famous magicians far back in his family tree, so every girl in the series throws themselves at him because his genes must obviously be keepers.  Right.  Moderatly amusing, and they do throw the guy the bone of being the most powerful mage around (in what, the second or third episode?), but this doesn't change the fact that 8 uses of magic at one use per episode means that this is either a really short series, or they break their rule somewhere.

Tide Line Blue - Heard a lot of good things about Blue Submarine, didn't expect something so...  bland.  Follow the adventures of a happy go lucky youth suddenly faced with big events and his own oddly important stature as he survives in the world following yet another mysterious disaster!  On the one hand, there doesn't seem to be a villain outside of greedy politicians, americans, and polluters yet.

Mai-Hime - The first few episodes looked interesting, and I actually bothered to watch this one the whole way through.  It actually reminds me a lot of Neon Genesis Evangelion in that it starts off with a nice mix of humour and drama, and generally looks like things won't be so bad.  And then you get to the end of the series where the tone goes pitch black, and you get to see people break.  And it is good.  The only possible flaw is the last episode, as it seems to reset everything, unless you just consider the fact that the good guys lost, in which case it all makes a kind of twisted sense.

Mai-Otome - Erg...  I am never going to be watching this.  There's something about a setting where women are made strong, but that strength is then made to basically serve one person to the exclusion of all else is upsetting.  Yes, I am aware that it's both genders that end up holding those leashes.  But the implications are just not ones I'm comfortable with.

Code Geass - The bastard love child of Death Note and Gundam.  And honestly, the worst of both.  You've got Gundam's massive geopolitical ideological struggles along with Death Note's wacky supergenius with supernatural power with rules, and ignoring the characterisation that makes Gundam, and the cat and mouse chase that made Death Note worth reading.  It's just a mess, especially when you get lame scenes like the shower one where you not only apparently have phones in the bathroom, but you're going to send a guy in to deliver towels while a girl is showering when there's at least two girls present, one of whom has a crush on the guy and thinks he may be interested in the chick that's  showering and is jealous over that?  And it only gets worse over time?!  Ye gods this thing is bad.  But, not as bad as...

Pani Poni Dash - Watched one episode.  Seems to be trying to go the route of having semi-competant character tossed into situation they're not ready to deal with filled with anime archtypes with their quirk dial turned up BEYOND THE MAX!!!  And I'm pretty sure that description sounds 10x better than the final result.  Watched one episode and then (with mass public approval) moved on to School Rumble.

School Rumble - Is Awesome.  Sure, it's a high school romantic comedy, but unlike most romantic comedies, it has romantic tension and humour.  I mean, for starters, it's one of the few shows of any medium where I'm not sure that the male and female lead are bound to hook up.  They not only have fun mocking all of their characters, but they also find fresh and interesting ways to subvert expectations.  And, all of this is done with a surprisingly large and well fleshed out cast of secondary characters, so occasionally you can ignore the main cast and focus on humiliating entirely different people.  As for the final episode, I'm still not entirely sure it actually happened, though there are two more seasons, so I'll make an effort to check those out when they're semi-available.

Gref: In addition, Ep 10 actually creeped me out a bit. Despite the comedic tone of the episode, the scenes in the car are really well done and have an air of tension thats hard to find in a lot of places.

Yeah, he dies halfway through the series and becomes a ghost, and most of the rest of the series is about how they try to revive him, capped with a normal romcom end after they do.

I didn't mind Maburaho. I don't watch too many harem/total fanservice type shows though, so I'm guessing it's more because I don't really know the genre enough to know it's like everything else. Yuuna was annoying, Kazuki had ups and downs, the childhood friend was alright at first then became annoying, everyone else was fine though. The professor was probably the best character. Best. Job. Ever.

Man, I couldn't agree more with your relative assessments of these two shows.  Currently watching School Rumble's 2nd season (which isn't as good, but still worth watching) so I'll have thoughts on that later.

Yeah, I can see why someone might like it, Sopko.  It's certainly hit the threshold of quality where I could sit through it, which puts it above everything else I saw in that sitting that I haven't already watched start to finish.

I ended up watching 12 episodes of Pani Poni Dash. It only gets worse - more nonsensical, less relatability, and somehow, less funny. I couldn't finish it and a friend had practically forced it on me. I only barely think of her as a friend anymore.

The only reason we remain friends is because we watched the first two episodes at a drunken party of friends one time and that was somewhat enjoyable. It might be the liquor talking, but I think the English dub is somewhat better than the Japanese version due to wonderful intonation abilities and better comic timing of some of the VAs.

In other words: you're not missing anything.

Oh, somebody picked up the subs? I'll have to grab the rest, then. Hopefully they'll keep it up whenever the second half goes to air.

Lupin III: Green vs. Red - Worst. Lupin. Ever. It started out pretty good, with a giant montage of homages to past iterations and scenes, but once it got into actual new material it was all downhill. By the end it's turned into a long screed against nuclear weapons and militarization, with Lupin as some kind of Platonic ideal of freedom, instead of, y'know, a whimsical lech who steals stuff. Doesn't even bother with the usual comedy atmosphere, going for a serious, action-movie kind of feel, which is bad for a franchise where you know going in that none of the regulars are actually in danger of dying and worse when you consider that the plot is ridiculous even by Lupin standards. And when I say that, bear in mind that before this, the last one I watched was the one where a scientist from the year 2800 goes back in time to kill Lupin in order to eliminate all of his descendants, because Arsene Lupin XXXIII stole his girlfriend. That is more believable than Green vs. Red.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: So... did Itoshiki die in Ep11 or...? What? If it was supposed to be some kind of parody or allusion, it went right passed me... In general, the series is an interesting piece which pokes fun at some of the problems facing modern Japanese culture. To great effect, I'm looking forward to Season 2 even though I'm still confused by Ep 11 here.

Not going to bother with SPOILERS tag because it's not that kind of series.

Gaogaigar: The Seven Great Primevals's attack on Orbital Base arc (episodes 38-41, IIRC) was awesomeness incarnate, especially the four-part attack to finish off the fused Primeval.

Desert Punk - Caught like an episode.  Looked like it was cliche but might have some potential.  Looked up the plot online.  Pass.

ANN's got a really funny review of Linebarrels up, and Clannad too. Zac's stuff is always gold.

EDIT: Feel like linking. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/fall-2008-preview/2008-10-04/zac    It's kinda like if Grefter reviewed anime. Read the Linebarrel one before Clannad

Watched a bunch of stuff yesterday on my day off. Started off the new season, finished some of the old.

Allison and Lillia- Great show. Excellent show. It's sad that Lillia and Treize are nowhere as cool as their parents were at their age, LET ALONE their parents as adults (Seriously, Wil kicks some serious ass now, and Allison only got more awesome), but that didn't stop the show from being worth watching. I don't know what's with the Japanese lately, but it's another show that bungles the last half of the last episode with time wasting crap instead of a more satisfying ending, but it worked better than say, Eureka 7's did. Totally worth watching in any case.

Soul Eater- Up to 25. I knew that once this show got over it's slapstick-during-inappropriate-moments thing it'd be awesome, and the last few episodes have proven that theory right. Excellent fights, awesome developments, just oozes style and reeks of cool. Medusa is one awesome villain <3

3x3 Eyes- Watched the first half. Good, classic, old school show with a lot going for it. Yakumo is no pansy, and it's funny to watch him grow into his condition to the point where he's hacking off his own arms. You'd think though that they'dve noticed the rich woman being evil, since she's not too discreet about it. Oh well.

Code Gaess- I cleared Episode 2! Leagues ahead of the first episode thanks to non-retarded storytelling, but jumps right into the whole "Main character is perfect" thing too happily. I'm also of the mind that the Knightmares are like Aestivalis, in that a newborn child could pilot them. Really, they take out a grunt with no training to pilot the Lancelot? Even Amuro at least read the manual and sucked a bit before improving. Suzaku is perfect off the bat. Should only improve from here, I'm guessing! Love how the resistance has totally retro character designs, aside from Kallen. Perms ftw.

Detroit Metal City- The Japanese Metalocalypse. This alone should get people to watch it. Utterly ridiculous and always hilarious.

New shit:

Hyakko- Slice-o-life-ish show. Starts off with a bunch of girls wandering around lost around campus. A good balance between sedate humor and slapstick, I'll probably at least follow up on it.

Kannagi- An above-average girl and guy forced to live together show, by the look of it. Guy carves a statue out of a piece of a sacred tree, statue comes alive in the form of cute girl who turns out to be the guardian spirit of the tree. Another show with good balance between sedate and slapstick, with genuinely funny moments, I'll probably be sticking with this one.

Still to watch: Toradora!, To Aru Majutsu no Index. Don't think there's anything else
