His & Her Circumstances. You just described it in a nutshell (and it's got good comedy, too). Warning: Hideki Anno is in charge, which doesn't show in the plotting (since it's based on a manga) but does come through in the animation budget.

Oh yeah, I forgot about KareKano!

Yeah, watch that. That's actually pretty good for romantic comedy. The lead female is especially interesting.

Tai: Geez, Tai, what's so especially wrong with Gravitation?

I don't think Tai has the phenotype to stomach that level of yaoi well.

EDIT: Because, honestly, most people -don't-. >_>

I saw Kare Kano (His & Her Circumstances) a while back.  I only watched the first five episodes, but I liked what I saw of that series.

If it wasn't for the harem part, I would recommend Seto no Hanayome.  That show is insane.

Eh, honestly, the yaoi level is pretty tame... And if Shuichi was a girl, it would be exactly the same as every other shoujo romantic comedy. I don't even know why it's famous as it looks to be exactly like everything else (except, you know, with CANON yaoi, but even then, it's pretty tame for a yaoi series)... My guess is that it was one of the first ones to get an anime series... As one of the first, it was 'pushing the envelope', I suppose (and thus, necessarily tame).

Hell... Loveless was more graphic than Gravitation, and included shouta crap... (I guess the hot lesbian scene in ep 11 makes people forget this?) And Junjo Romantica... hell, that's softcore gay porn...

Honestly, if you don't like yaoi, I totally understand this...

It just seems weird that Gravitation, which is so tame, has become shorthand for OMG! SO GAY!

Manga, Manga, Manga

Bleach- Sucks worse than normal.

One Piece- Remains solid.

Ruroni Kenshin- Finished it. Final arc was pretty good, in my opinion. Overall, I'd rank it up there as far as shonen go. I would have liked less subtext on the main romance dynamic, given it takes up a lot, but hey. It works. Ended on very heartwarming/cheerful notes, which was what it needed.

Read or Die- So weird, having seen the anime first. Not... really sure what to make of it? Art is pretty and it has its moments, but the storytelling gets really confused at times.

Double Arts- Good times, and I damn Soppy to a thousand hells for getting me started on it.

Probably because Gravitation was watched by a lot of people.

You'd be surprised, really.

Perhaps it is because there is Super Pandabot roaming over Manhattan Blvd. in New York? Or perhaps because of the mafia equivalent managers who are all braindeads and having them shooting or got shot on their heads and groans every 5 seconds? Or is it because Shuichi is a completly degenerative piece of trash???
You know, this is coming from me, the yaoi devil of the forum, and I say... Gravitation is NOT a yaoi work. It is a 3rd rated nonsensical comedy involving total morons biting off one another.

So you anime watchers, is there anything that's uh, sort of slice-of-life romantic stuff without being overtly loli and/or harem centered?

Basically I want to watch something that involves a guy and a girl falling in love and dating eachother. Can also be a comedic thing.

Preferably something new, since I've seen most of the old stuff.

Hah!  How many posts in and you get approximately one decent answer!  Chumps.

Anyway, Bokura ga Ita and Lovely Complex if you haven't seen them.

Also, on the manga end of things, Mint na Bokura is the best romantic comedy EVAR.

Actually, for a serious answer, I'd go with School Rumble - it's more comedy than romance, but that's what makes it good.

KareKano is one of the first anime I've ever seen.

Guess I'll re-watch it, since apparently it is unique in its genre?!

And I know anime doesn't suit my needs. Sometimes I just hope that changes.

The computer ate my first post on this, but anyway.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVAs:

'Tylor's War:' sehr gut!  a perfect encore performance of the best of the series!

The Episodes After That but Before the Story Gets Going Again:  more serious, which is odd, but not bad.  Seems they switched animators, too.  Episode about Tylor and Yuriko was sweet, episode about whatsisname the fighter pilot reminded me of Macross Plus in a good way, episode about Azalyn needed to die, and episode about the marines was good old fashioned fun.

'When will the Skies Clear' and 'From Here to Eternity:'  A well-written story that leads from the investigation of a mysterious deep-space accident to a flashpoint that threatens the Earth and Raalgon empires alike.  One small problem: the writers got cute and told the story out of chronological order.  Nothing wrong with that per se, but this story would have been better served straight.  The end, which they do get right, is sentimental and climactic, a worthwhile epilogue to a great series.

EDIT: I'd just throw this in a different post, but three in a row is kinda egregious.  People might think I was just inflating my post count <_<

RD Sennou Chosashitsu.  Just saw the first episode, and it seemed pretty cool, but also like I could watch the entire series and discover, in the end, that there was little point to having done so *coughKurenaicough*.  Any thoughts?

Humdedum. 4 episodes into Nanoha, already more interesting than a lot of magical girl stuff. Gots all of Monster and Nodame Cantabile off of a friend. And keeping up with Gundam 00, with plans to download Turn A sometime soon and possibly go buy Overman King Gainger.

Is anyone else here still interested in 00? The last ep seems like it miiiight lead to some epic badassery.

Aquarion- ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. WHY? WHY, JAPAN? WHY MUST YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO ME? Why must you continually ruin entertaining series by slipping in unnecessary filler, incomplete stories and shitty endings?! Ugh. The first 18 episodes were entertaining as hell. Hilarious stuff. The show worked because it didn't seem to take itself as seriously as you think it will. It was like a mecha Utena, complete with screwed up character relationships, thinly veiled sexual metaphors and awesome battles set to great music.

Turbulence hit with 16-18, since they were pretty much comedic filler, but the show was mostly a comedy before, and the episodes were, by and large, ranging between funny and goddamn hilarious. But... as soon as I saw the OP change at Ep 19, I knew the series was about to go down the crapper. The first theme is... so damn good, and it's amazing that no matter how many times you hear it, as the OP and in the episodes, it just rocks. The second OP is an awful song and works even worse as a battle theme, especially for a show like Aquarion. Suddenly, the story tries to go from simple and fun to complicated and angsty. Maybe if they had, I don't know, 13 more episodes instead of 8 and much better writers this could have been done, but no. The battles got a lot less epic, since the new theme SUCKED HARDCORE. Too many villains, not enough exposition. The time they wasted with 16-18 really coulda been used better if this was the route they were going to take. Where at the rate they were going pre-19, you expected an epic, awesome, Gurren Lagann type final battle. Instead it was just... shitty. Ugh.

Commander Gen was fun, him treating the kids the way he does makes sense because they damn well deserve it. They just... decide to gloss over the answers to the biggest questions about his character, namely why he rocks so much. What should be an OMGWIN moment ends up a few boring seconds shoved in the middle of other stuff and still is never fully explained. On a humorous note though, his philosophy lessons reminded me of the South Park episode where Tweak freaks out at his parents. I'm surprised no one pulled it on him:  "AHHHH! YOUR EXPLANATIONS NEVER MAKE ANY SENSE IWANTOUTIWANTOUT!"

Sirius is on the Sakaki and Sasuke tier, officially. If you're in an anime or game and your name starts with an S, you're officially on notice.

I... haven't been this upset with how a show turned out in a while. The worst kind and true definition of a trainwreck. At least Gaess was bad all the the through and got worse, so it was funny to watch the fail. A real trainwreck has to have momentum and turn from a good ride to something horrible.

Gah. I need something to rescue me from this mood. Time for a Gunbuster/Dai-Guard/Gurren-Lagann marathon.

Good call on that marathon, Soppy.

Ga-Rei Zero:10

Evil Yomi is EVIL. Not that this is a surprise given episode 2, but man does it take on a whole new light given what transpired since then. Hasn't been much in the way of good fights lately (plenty of ordinary action however). I imagine that is going to get fixed in the next few episodes given how the show is ramping up into overdrive. The show did an excellent job of building the relationship between the heroines, and it has come time to cash in on that.

This series has just been a winner so far regardless. Characters, fight scenes, music. The plot puts all of its focus on building or tearing down characters, which is always a good thing in my book. It helps that it just oozes style.

I'm fully expecting a break-the-cutie ending.

Ef: 11

Oh bah. This series wasted too much time with Kuze and Mizuki. On the plus side, Yuuko is still creepy.

Tending to think this series is mostly worth watching for episode 6, but that alone elevates it above most other things for me, at least.
