Finally started watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan (in HD!).

All I can say about this anime is that it is quite hilarious. Very funny indeed.

Episode 17. Really missing the over-egotistical maniac, but.. I dunno. It's not a bad anime, it just started off intensely well and Simon isn't as awesome as the over-egotistical maniac. Perhaps I should get over it?

By now? Yes.

Anyways, Slayers is on Hulu, so I'm finally watching it. Um... this is actually pretty awesome after like 5 episodes, normal reaction? The characters are colorful without being painfully exaggerated, and the interaction is pretty fun. Heck, the fights aren't bad either, even if a lot of it is just a vessel for more humor (a good thing, mind).

Bakemonogatari, up through episode 7.

Watch this, all of you.

It's an Akiyuki Shinbo show.

I'm not really sure how I feel about it.  The art and direction are fabulous in all aspects.  Everything about the show is fabulous, really, but there are some rough parts where ironically the goodness serves to point out that it has even more unrealized potential.

Not really sure I buy the best-dialogue-ever hype.  It's good, yes, but it's not spectacular (a couple of memorable zingers per episode, but it doesn't have the "I can remember an entire conversation" level of quality going for it), and most of the really good lines only work because of the art and direction going on around them at the time.  I think the main fault to be found here is in the voice acting - the dialogue itself could work with a lot of different intonations, but the actors deliver almost everything in a steady deadpan that doesn't add anything.  Ararararagi's VA is the same guy who did Nozumo from SZS, and he's doing... the exact same voice, almost, which invites some unflattering comparisons between the two shows.

First episode bait and switch is also in heavy effect here.  EP1 was gorgeous, shockingly so, and it's not really too surprising that later episodes have had obviously less art budget.  Fortunately, Shinbo-style makes up for it.

EP1 also, however, made out like this was going to be a show with a continuing and at least semi-serious dramatic plot.  There was foreshadowing, there were fight scenes and people getting their hearts ripped out, there were character dynamics starting.  All that got dropped almost instantly in favor of short episodic arcs... and then the arcs themselves seem to be getting wrapped down further, as the basketball girl didn't even get her own OP like Mayoi did.  We've seen this before, too, in SZS, and SZS did it better than what we've seen here so far (for one thing, it wasn't nearly this formulaic (problem->talk to Meme->solution turns out to be family/relationship drama)).  If we wind up getting nothing but a bunch of short arcs introducing an ever expanding cast of oneoff characters I'll be rather disappointed.  Buuut it's still only about halfway through the season, so I'm still holding out hope for a central plot to pick up.

Even with those flaws this is probably the best show of the last couple years by far and everyone needs to watch it.  Shinbo seriously needs to win some sort of award for direction, and the artists and graphic designers (it's clearly not ALL Shinbo's work) should get a lot of praise too.

Episode 3 should be required viewing for anyone even remotely interested in theatre or media.

Watch this.

RahXephon-

The person I was watching it with decided to spoil themself on the upcoming events for god-knows-whatever reason and decided they didn't like the direction the show was heading, so I was left to my own devices with regards to scheduling. Huzzah. I have now finished.

It was generally entertaining all up and well worth watching. I don't really see the comparison to Evangelion outside of the last few episodes, although it being the last few episodes this may colour peoples's overall memory. I especially enjoyed the implementation of the time-relationship concept similar to the one in Nadesico... hopefully that is understandable enough to people who have seen the show to know what I'm talking about, because I cannot currently think of a better way of wording it that wouldn't lead to spoilers. I also think pretty highly of the final Hiroko episode.

The final battles make little to no sense, and the overall objective of the Mu is never really explained, considering the disparity between what they say and what they do. Most of the rest of everything else is explained well enough, however.

Didn't really get what they were trying to do with Makoto; after he stopped being a smarmy guy who existed for no readily apparent reason, they drifted back and forth between showing him in a positive light and a negative light. Then he became a chewtoy.

I have the movie on hand and I intend to watch it tomorrow. The case tries to tell me that it's a companion piece, but the booklet that came with it does not seem to think the same. Well, I'll find out how things are soon enough.

If you've played BoFV, the RahXephon movie is kinda like the SOL scenes for the series.  The whole ending battle makes a lot more sense after the movie, at least to me.

RahXephon: The Motion Picture: Pluralitas Concentio-

Well. First off I think it bears stating that I believe that the overall plot of the movie would be approaching total incomprehensibility for anyone that had not seen the series.

That being said, as I feared they also changed a bunch of stuff, so it's not particularly friendly to those who have seen the series and are of a certain mindset either. Some, like Quon's part in the storyline, are considerable disconnects from the series, so it isn't like it was just inconsequential changes. The painting ridden so much in the series has also disappeared, among other things.

I'm not sure how I feel about Ayato knowing the identity the whole time, as the mystery was one of the better parts of the series, I think (although to be fair it does not really present itself as a mystery as such for some time in the series, and once it does it becomes fairly obvious what the answer is). Here it's effectively hidden behind a single name in-universe, while the viewer knows the whole time. Tsk.

On a more positive note, the additions to the gloves microstoryline were welcome (assuming I'm not reading too much into things, anyway). You get the latter half of the point behind them in the series, although at the point you do you don't have the context to fully understand it, and I had forgotten about them by the time you do get that. Then you get the former half of the point behind them in the movie... it was nice to see and caused me to connect the earlier point I had missed. Of course, their point is liable to be completely lost in the movie alone.

The opening section of the film before it started retreading old ground was also a welcome addition, but only because of changes that had been made - it would not really have been possible in the series, except as an extension to the coda.

I am afraid I do not understand anything more about the final battles after having seen this, and I didn't really see anywhere any clarification might have come from. It did however go some distance in explaining the Mu further.

Cannot really say I think much of the changes to the ending. At least it's somewhat compatible with the original ending, but I don't really like the direction it took.

All up, it's probably worth watching if you've seen the series, but I really wouldn't recommend it if you haven't.

Ponyo.  The main character is 5, and there is nothing in this movie that would scare a 5-year-old.  Very pretty, completely adorable, but utterly lacking in suspense.

I'm really pissed off at my landlord right now, and seeing Ponyo didn't quell my rage, so I guess that means it's not everything it could be?  Maybe?

Last anime seen was Paprika, by Satoshi Kon. Tokyo Godfathers is the only one I haven't seen yet.
I really should though...

I've also been on a Myazaki spree a little while back. In rather quick succession I saw Cogliostro, Nausicaa, Laputa, Kiki, Totoro, Mononoke, Howl and Spirited.

Finished Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan. I've come to understand that I did not like Simon initially until the last three episodes because I thought he was lacking largely in the manhood category, and I don't particularly like characters who are deemed the strongest but consistently need some sort of push to prove so. I suppose you could say he become more like Kamina, which I don't think really matters to me. But he became much more self-starting that group-self-starting if that makes any sense. I watched it in HD and though I thought the last episode somewhat glazed over my knowledge of galaxies/Big Bang, I still liked it.

The ending was... extremely short. I did not like that. I think with a situation like TTGL where people involved with the situation put so much of themselves in the issue, I wouldn't have minded seeing a cliché recap of what their lives are like after such a huge event. Either way, I give it a 7/10 for mecha-based awesomeness only, then overall perhaps it floats between 8-9/10 overall.

I think there's some sort of movie/radio drama/manga TTGL continuation or something in the works. Let's wikipedia it!

...Okay, so wikipedia states that there are both Movie and Manga adaptations of TTGL that expand a bit on what was seen in the series. Hopefully that includes the ending, as that was the part that I, too, felt was a bit lacking.

To my knowledge, they made two Gurren Lagann movies, one for each half of the series.  Since the second half is shorter, it's entirely possible they expanded on the ending.  Or they just upped the TTGL fight to a full half hour.
... both seem good.

They expanded the ending by, and I am not making this up, giving every Ganmen a Tengen Toppa form, and then combining all of then with TTGL to form SUPER TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN. This thing needs to be fansubbed, stat.

Right, forgot about that.  Fits in with some of the changes the first movie made though, I guess they wanted to remember that Gurren Lagann was actually a combining mecha more.

Gravion Zwei-

The Immediate Obsolescence concept was thrown away completely for this series, sadly. Ah well. They seemed to have left the disinformation campaign thread dropped also.

Sandman gets some pretty awesome scenes in the early episodes, but these dry up when it starts to get more serious. Ah well.

Hugi's motivation is pretty atrocious. So is Faye's, for that matter.

All up, it is better than the original series. But I'm not sure I would say it was especially so. If they wanted to go the more meaningful route that they seemed to be wanting to take by the end, they shouldn't have started off with essentially filler episodes given the low episode count.

Also Sol Gravion is kinda ugly.

So the first TTGL movie is subbed? I saw a guy in my Phil class wearing a TTGL shirt. I was interested in saying "Hey! TTGL!" but we were outside doing Philosophy stuff because our teacher left her keys on mass transit, and I was hot and seeking shelter right after class ended and I totally forgot about it and my foot came out of my flat shoe while I was walking and a guy picked it up and he kept talking to me and runonrunonrunon.

The first one's subbed, yeah (it's called Gurren-hen, IIRC). The second one should be later this year, once it comes out on DVD.

Just hit on him the next class.

Or, you know, befriend him and have nerdy anime talks. I'm not even snarking, I'd probably enjoy a friend with who to talk about nerdy stuff and do nerdy things with. Keeping up with all this baseball/football/BIKING/music talk is maddening. I need a friend circle that's nerdy!

Just for kicks, decided to randomly watch some old anime movies and OVAs.

Genocyber - would be good if it were good.  Is bad, unfortunately, so is bad.  The concepts are cool, they seem to have figured out some interesting things to do with those concepts, but the writing in the more specific sense and the directing are so awful that those things are completely, utterly wasted.  It would probably have been better if they hadn't tried as hard.  Or had tried harder.

Judge - Mediocre at worst.  Kinda Pet Shop of Horrorsy, has a dark sense of humor to go along with the horror.

Wizardry - Made in the late '80s and based on Wizardry 1, this movie is, somehow, not bad.  Totally unrealistic, though!  In the first minute:

#1 the fighter kills more than one enemy in a round.
#2 the party wins a fight easily.
#3 the thief opens a treasure chest and no one dies as a result.

Really.

Manga Round-Up

Bleach- Been okay. Actually forgot Ichigo and Co. existed for a time and was only reminded by seeing in on Adult Swim and remembering the show was not, technically, about SS. Still, it has been fun lately. Starks is the emoest lil' espada.

One Piece- War has been fantastic and the sheer amount of stupid powers thrown around have been glorious.

Kurohime- Picked this up on a whim. Starts kinda weak, but develops quite nicely. Lot of WAFF and then *SPOILERS*. Sad times. Sad times. We'll see how it goes from here.

Negima- Picked it up on a whim. Only read the first volume. It is fun. Can paste Love Hina over it fairly cleanly at the moment though.

Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro- Whim. Moe, but enjoyable fluff.

Yeah, that doesn't last.  Negima mostly slides on a scale between fighting shonen and the latter part of Love Hina where the main character doesn't fail at life.

EDIT: the fun lasts.
