You should try out Voltron.  It has lots going for it that is not action sequences.  You get to play "Spot the horrible editing" and "Man we should totally go buy some acid and watch this shit".  Voltron rules.

Edit - Speed Racer works better for it though to be honest.
NO MORE POKEMON - Meeplelard.

If I was into drugs I would probably do that thing with the acid.

As it stands, I just watched first three episodes of Shin Mazinger. First episode was borderline incomprehensible AND as far as I know totally unnecessary to understanding the rest of the show - but still pretty rad, if only because it was just RANDOM ASS KICKING. All three episodes, of course, consist primarily of people running around trying to be more badass than each other. Baron Ashura in particular got an... upgrade from the Ashura I know.

Plot is mostly just fluff to get more smashing shit happening, which is fine because this is Mazinger not Evangelion or something.

This is probably true.

Someone should put money into this.

Best part is the box set costs like $20.  Speed Racer is a very cheap high.

I still remember that one episode of Speed Racer with a gigantic semi-truck made out of stolen gold.

So reading a manga. Ane Doki. Um.

I'm not sure. Japan confuses me. Basically a 17-year-old girl intrudes on a 13-year-old boy's home, starts living there and take over household chores since his father ran off to another city for work.

Seems like a lot of Japanese culture stuff I don't get. In the first few pages the boy's eating ice cream, then the girl sees him and asks for some ice cream. He's all ZOAMG! INDIRECT KISSU DA. And I'm all "What's the big deal?"

Oh well.

You might be confusing the fact that romantic anime/manga characters have significantly less common sense than the legally insane with actual Japanese customs. On the other hand, by all accounts, the Japanese seem to have significantly less common sense than the legally insane anyway.

True, but it happens more often now that I think on it. I just am curious why anime/manga characters need to make such a big deal out of sharing an ice cream or whatever. If that's an "indirect kiss", I've indirectly kissed a lot of people.

That's because anime characters in cliche romantic situations have the contractual obligation of being clinically retarded when the writing sucks. Which is basically all the time.

First four episodes of Shin Mazinger. Crazy shit. I... guess I'll get what the first episode is later, since it's basically the end of the show? Pacing is surprisingly slow aside from that, seeing as how they're still dealing with the first mechanical beast, though it should pick up later. Baron Ashura and Juuzou Kabuto are both way more badass than I expected. Plenty of other good guy robots already too - Sayaka and Boss are certainly different here, and it's pretty cool stuff. Of course, the mechanical designs are the same wacky Nagai creations we know and love(?), so we've got a robot piloted by sexy twins... who each sit in one of the robot's giant metal breasts. Lovely.

Seems that this'll have a lot more non-giant-robot action too, and I know they used a lot of Violence Jack characters so now I need to find that too.

Ninja Scroll (Movie) -

Was listed as similar to Basilisk which I found considerably enjoyable so. Outside of Kagero, the similarity mostly ends with 'there are ninjas and they all have bizarre powers' (and Kagero is really effectively just that, except the two of them have roughly the same power and vaguely similar goals in life). It's a nice film, it just wasn't strictly everything I was hoping for. Given the limited time however I'm not sure that was a realistic ideal anyway.

I intend to watch the series at some point, but it may take a while to get to it. Trailer makes it look a fair departure from the tone of the movie anyway.

El Hazard TMW -

Magnificent. Highly entertaining. Katsuhiko is delightfully insane.

That said it does ride on its humour a bit overmuch, and when they try to include some touching moments such as the ending they're generally not very effective. Which is a shame as it by all rights should have been leaving aside the fact that he is in love with a robot and I can't actually pinpoint why it doesn't work as well as it might.

Diva effectively disappears from the show halfway in which is a tad bemusing.

El Hazard TMW 2 -

Not so magnificent. Still good, but there's less of Katsuhiko being insane. Also inferior designs for some characters. Also the plot is less worthwhile. I will grant that I completely didn't expect the Kalia situation to be resolved the way it was.

Fatora and Aleile disappear halfway into the show just to set up a lame joke at the end, and Diva disappears AGAIN albiet this time vaguely justified by her being ordered to stock up their new fortress with a large amount of warriors, which considering what she is I find somewhat disturbing.

The extras make reference to El Hazard Wanderers and TAW, but the TMW collection appears to be the only thing available here with the others discontinued or worse. I am in a temporary state of despair.

Jinnai rocks hardcore. THATS how you do megalomania properly! Did you watch the dub? He's even more hilarious in the dub. Honest.

Yeah, some of the touching moments fell flat, but I liked the ending.

The Alternative World is a sequel to the OVA that... is okay, has it's moments, while The Wanderers is a retelling of the OVA thats pretty different. Rune Venus is the main love interest, Ifurita is ditzy and has dark purple hair, among other things.

Mahoujin GuruGuru Episode 23:
Oh god, this anime is so cute. Nike is hilarious, Kukuri is cute, Gipple is uh, Nothingness Fairy is strangely amusing and the cast of villains is all shades of ridiculous. Jokes are pretty nice, and even making a gag reference to earlier episodes was amusing.

Favourite character beside the mains (Nike and Kukuri) is definitely Kita Kita Oyaji.

A++ anime. And there's a second season. Just the OP already draws me in. Stupid dance++ = appeal+++++++

Tenchi OVAs - Tenchi is kinda annoying, because it has great potential, sets up an expansive and entertaining cast...then runs out of time.  Can't think of another show that does so much exposition it never gets around to a plot.  Give it this: in Tenchi, when there are lasers and spaceships people flying around and alternate dimensions and awakened powers and such, it's actually pretty fun.  Probably because the entire show is a testament to accepting strangeness at face value and not sweating the small stuff, like the sanctity of the timeline or the fate of the planet.

Also, props to a show which can seamlessly work in this piece of dialogue:

person 1: "what's going on?"
person 2: "none of your business!"
person 1: "I created the universe, so it kinda is."

It also works better than most all harem shows because Tenchi is mostly a non-factor in the whole thing. While Tenchi is still pretty milquetoast, he's still leagues ahead of most harem mains and it's still not really about how great he is, but rather more of a contest Ayeka and Ryoko are having between themselves than anything else, which leads to great comedy and a significant reduction of that headdesking harem usually inspires.

Hm, I think the difference between Tenchi and most well-meaning sops is that he's actually useful, being a carrot farmer.

Tetsuichi- Picked up volume 5, Mayuri once again spends an entire volume subtlety preaching her humanism philosophy of sort. Not that I mind, I actually like the way she preaches, at the very least all the introspective are well written. And knowing Hiko didn't got kicked out of the plot is a nice thing to no. Have him reunite with Tetsu already, their excessive brotherly love is what motivated me to read thign thing in the first place.

True, but it happens more often now that I think on it. I just am curious why anime/manga characters need to make such a big deal out of sharing an ice cream or whatever. If that's an "indirect kiss", I've indirectly kissed a lot of people.

Just so you know, even my -middle-schoolers- think this concept is stupid. No one in Japan cares about 'indirect kissing'. It's a hold-over manga gimmick from -at latest- the 80s.

The extras make reference to El Hazard Wanderers and TAW, but the TMW collection appears to be the only thing available here with the others discontinued or worse. I am in a temporary state of despair.

You are missing nothing. In fact, intentionally stop now and preserve your opinion of the series while you still can.
