Mad Fnorder is busy wrestling polar bears in the Arctic tundra, so I have been tasked with wrapping up the Tech Tournament in his stead. Results ahoy!

For the Children (Shadow Hearts 2) vs. Liberate (Parasite Eve): Think I know enough about Liberate for this? Chain status pushes FtC over the top, here. That is cool beans.

Spellbinding Eye (Grandia 2) vs. Ripper Blast (Star Ocean 2): Moves that do something besides damage are usually cooler than damage.
Lightning Stab (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs. Underpants Dance (Dragon Quest VIII): See above. Not that Underpants Dance is really about doing anything.
Intrude (Wild Arms 4) vs. Blinding Blaze (Valkyrie Profile 2): See SBE vs. RB, again!

Calamity Jane (Wild Arms 3): YCCTFOGA is mostly an awesome name, the attack itself is random and unremarkable. CJ is a less cool name, but has a cooler animation, and is actually noteworthy gameplaywise.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

Main Bracket:
For the Children (Shadow Hearts 2) vs. Liberate (Parasite Eve) - Big fan of Liberate
Invincible (Arc the Lad 2) vs. Dragon King Slice (Grandia) - I suppose... though I'm still a bit sad that we can't have Nibelung Valesti vs. Nibelung Valesti finals now...
Galactic Punt (Persona 4) vs. Megid (Phantasy Star 2)
Nibelung Valesti "Level 0 - Alicia Edition" vs. Pumpkin Parade (Phantom Brave) - Still a really stylish move.

Spellbinding Eye (Grandia 2) vs. Ripper Blast (Star Ocean 2) - Super-status is fun.
Lightning Stab (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs. Underpants Dance (Dragon Quest VIII) - Next time there really should be a 'most humorous' category.
Intrude (Wild Arms 4) vs. Blinding Blaze (Valkyrie Profile 2) - Raquel signature move makes enemies explode.
Pancake (Rhapsody) vs. Coup de Grace (La Pucelle: Tactics) - Dessert > Damaged balls

Boss Division:
Calamity Jane (Wild Arms 3) vs. Ness Ness Ness Ness / "You cannot comprehend the form of Giygas's Attack!" (Earthbound) - An interesting gameplay move -and- a cameo?! Sold.

And congrats to WEWY for finally making it to the finals in one contest... Next time, get a championship!

Main Bracket:
Galactic Punt (Persona 4) vs. Megid (Phantasy Star 2) - I was going to vote Galatic Punt to even this out, because they are both awesome and the score deserves to be close to reflect this.  Then I read Dhyer's commentary, so...  yeah.  Not gonna vote with him on this one.

Spellbinding Eye (Grandia 2) vs. Ripper Blast (Star Ocean 2) - May be a little cliche, but there's something about making a jagged field of rocks with a sword swing that amuses me.
Lightning Stab (Final Fantasy Tactics) vs. Underpants Dance (Dragon Quest VIII) - Awesome vs. Practical
Intrude (Wild Arms 4) vs. Blinding Blaze (Valkyrie Profile 2) - Sure, Intrude is really effective, but it's also really, really, boring.  At least Blinding Blaze is pretty.

You're voting for Megid to spite me? I mean...it's a really bad attack. It's way aftergame in a game where levelling is a pain, eats a lot of MP, and damages your allies pretty heavily, making it of questionable worth against the relatively tanky final boss, who is likely the one who it who you've theoretically grinded for. It's PS 2 graphics, so I can't imagine it's the animation or style...so, honestly I'm pretty baffled by an activately worthless move being here.

Eh, if I had an active preference, then no, spiting you wouldn't be on the table.  It's part of why I noted fairly clearly that my consideration for voting in favour of Galactic Punt was in order to even the score to reflect what I felt to be a close battle.

As for why I like Megid.  Well, you're right that it's not overly effective.  Then again, I'm voting Underpants Dance over Lightning Stab, and Binding Blaze over Intrude.  Oh, and Ripper Blast over Spellbinding Eye.  So, yeah.  Graphics wise, it's decent for the Genesis, and I know I dock points for old systems limits a lot less than other people.  But the main reason I'm voting for it is just concept.  It's not just the idea of turning rage into destructive power.  It's the fact that it does eat half your MP, the fact that it is 4 times as powerful as the second best attack in the game, and the fact that it's so powerful and unfocused, your party also eats blowback from it.  That's the stuff that gets me stylistically about it.  That makes it stand out as a move that appeals to me at a very fundamental level.

Sure, it's an obnoxious move to get, and not even all that useful.  But nothing else short of the Destiny Plume really manages to get across the idea of "I'm so pissed off, I am going to take you down whatever the cost"

It's slightly better than double the power of the next best attack. It's a nice concept...but the move itself is really bad! At least with Underpants Dance it's harmless, while Megid strikes me as something that's just more likely going to bring you pain. It's...perhaps the worst in-game tech I can of think in an RPG.

Wierd, I remember Nathu only being like 120 or so compared to the 400 of Megid.  Regardless, so far as I am concerned, effectiveness is kinda nice as a tiebreaker, except that apparently it isn't even worth that considering that the fact that Galactic Punt is super effective isn't getting it a clean nod over Megid.  So...  yeah.

I can see where you're coming from.  It's just that apparently I'm not the only one who utterly ignores how useful a move is for this competition.

My vote for Megid is because its an interesting case where, unlike most things with lots of in-game worth, it meshes -perfectly- with the DL setting and loses its weaknesses in the transition. It also has its uses in PSII single-character runs, at least.

Pancake (Rhapsody) vs. Coup de Grace (La Pucelle: Tactics)
