First... a public service announcement. Announcing:
Guess the RPG Character, Obscura edition.
Certain games aren't really a good choice for GTRPGC because very few people have played them, resulting in disappointment and annoyance when people find out they've been wasting their time trying to guess a character from a Japan-only MSX game. However, it's fun to write clues for them, and it seems a shame never to use them. Solution? Do it quiz-style. Sometime in the next two weeks, I'll post a topic with 10-20 GTRPGC clue-sets. People can PM in their answer for each question, and all the answers will be released at once. That way, if you see clues that make just no sense, you can feel somewhat confident you didn't play the game and just ignore it. There'll be some clues for well-known game characters mixed in, so that you can't eliminate the possibility that a set of clues is corresponding to Tidus or the like which should keep people honest (and give something more for people who've played fewer obscure games to do).
So why am I posting about this at all before I actually make the thread? Well, if I made
all the clues myself, there'd be rather large obscura gaps for games I haven't played. I do have about 10 clues or so ready, but I could certainly use more. So, if you're interested,
feel free to submit via PM a Guess the RPG Character clue for an obscure game. Note that since the answer has to be figured out from just one "set" of clues, feel free to be a bit more blatant than normal. That is, there should hopefully be some trigger that, if noticed, would cause someone thinking of the right character to say "Yeah, that's him for sure." (On the other hand, it shouldn't be so blatant that anyone who played the game would instantly figure it out.)
No guarantee all submitted puzzles will be accepted - it's doubtful we'd want to have two questions from the same obscure game, for example, and I / someone else might have already submitted one - but I'll do my best. (Feel free to ask me over IRC or via PM if a game is already "taken," of course). Also, there's such a thing as too obscure - I'd say that Septerra Core-level is about where I'd draw the line for "this is too obscure even for the obscura edition." Notable games I can guarantee I haven't written clues for: Gust games a la Atetlier Iris, anything on 360/Wii/PS3/PSP, Super Robot Wars / GBA RPGs not named Fire Emblem or Golden Sun. And there's still plenty of SNES/PS1/PS2 games of lesser repute out there. The
stat topic archive thread's Not Ranked games is a good starting point for more ideas. And don't feel obligated to write a lot - just one clue set would be great, as I don't need tons, just a little bit more variety.
We now resume with our regularly installed episode of
Guess the RPG character, normal edition, already in progress...
(and to be extra-clear, this clue is normal edition! This is not hyper-obscure.)
