E3 2009
« on: June 03, 2009, 04:44:24 PM »
Has anyone been following some of the press behind the Sony/Microsoft Conferences this E3? Is there anything that particularly excites you or disappoints you? You can live stream if you want on any popular gaming site like GameSpot or G4. I've learned that streaming on G4 really fails because of its constant buffering. And watching it on TV only reminds me how sucky and non-funny the majority of the staff is.

The things that had stood out to me:
360: Project Natal. It's nothing particularly groundbreaking to me, but I feel that if somehow this is perfected and preferably used in specific games rather than a standard in a lot of games, it will definitely affect my level of immersion. Take for instance Zelda: people went high off their horses with being able to slash realistically. If Microsoft can somehow use the software to work off of the repetitive motions and give the experience more fluidity, it's definitely upping Nintendo.

None of the MGSs excited me. I personally think there's too many of them, but uh, I've only played and never beat Twin Snakes. Ha.

SE: Of course. Expected much more from them. FFXIV is interesting, now I may be able to hop onto a more contemporary SE MMO, but it's otherwise something that isn't exactly exciting. Perhaps a closer release date for a game you guys have been working on for four+ years, maybe?

Golden Sun DS is pretty spiffy. The Mario and Luigi RPG. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 being multiplayer seems a bit spiffy. Been waiting for some multiplayer RPGs, and still waiting for more. Magna Carta 2 gameplay is nice and all, but not really a show stopper for E3.

My E3 grade for this year, as it's been for the passed few years, is a D. >.>

So Golden Sun DS is finally going to happen.

Man, 2009 is the year when all fanboy wishes come true... FFL2DS remake (I'm guilty of that for this game...), Pokemon HGSS... Golden Sun DS.

I need to finish the first one too, but otherwise, this is exactly what I was thinking.
Otherwise, this E3's been painfully disappointing for me. ;(

Odd no one cares about the new ICO. And it seems I am the only one who feel the Golden Sun is not going to be as good as it sounds....

Well I haven't actually played anything from ICO Team (I KNOW, I know...) but I have played Golden Sun, and thought it was decent.

New ICO WHAT?

Okay, Monkey Island isn't the only news worth caring about. Marginally.

New ICO released a trailer like...a week ago people >_>

Some of the E3 announcements that caught my notice:

NSMBWii -- it's a 2D platformer on the Wii that can be played 4-player.  Thinking back, I've enjoyed every 2D platformer I've played so far on the wii (SPM, Warioland) so...sure, worth a look.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTjWLgx4ndc

Mario Galaxy 2--looks like they're taking Mario Galaxy and doing Yoshi and extra levels; not going to be earth shattering, but I like SMG, so decent chance I'll like more SMG.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9pWgEp86cM

Metroid Other M--okay, now here's the big branching out that's caught my interest.  I've seriously lost interest in the Metroid Prime series; Prime 1 was noteworthy for the time, but 2/3 don't have the cutting edge factor, and at least 2 was drifting further away from gameplay I like and more into long slog territory (haven't played 3).  Here's a complete reboot from gameplay to style to development studio; definitely would like to try it.

Under the category of "it's an MMO so I won't play it, but it caught my attention anyway because shiny trailer is shiny", we have Star Wars Old Republic:

FFXIV
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj66LI8-lp0

Also:

Sort-of like Little Big Planet, but with kart racing.

And yeah, others already mentioned the DS stuff.

Yeah, I didn't know either. Haven't played SotC, but Ico = AWESME. (Despite being yet another one of those games that I've never got round to finishing. >_>)

I'm... not so optimistic about Other M from that trailer. I mean... it's Samus in a Ninja Gaiden game basically? Don't know if I want that.

NSMB sounds cool though.

Trico (Or the Last Guardian as it is now) Is weird in terms of hype. I know it'll be jaw-dropping, and I appreciate the trailer, but team ICO stuff is kind of an auto-buy for me anyway, so the hype-effect is limited.

I dunno--the parts they showed that were actually gameplay looked fairly 2D (some of them--probably alternates), and I don't remember seeing 2D stuff out of Ninja Gaiden.  I've definitely heard people complain that on harder difficulties Ninja Gaiden becomes a block-and-counter-fest, and I didn't see any blocking in that trailer.  So...not exactly a Ninja Gaiden, for all that it seems like there's lots of grapples/throws, which is unusual for a Metroid game too.

Maybe not Ninja Gaiden specifically, but if the trailer is any indication, it's primarily an action game, which Metroid pretty specifically isn't (Even the FPS installments). Of course, back when Prime was announced, that looked fundamentally unMetroidy, and it turned out not to be, so we'll see how they do.

Team Ninja lost their dickhead retarded director so I'm pretty hopeful for the new metroid currently.

NSMB and Golden Sun DS are the only things that sound interesting to me.

FF series is getting -another- MMO?

...sigh.

And I was so hopeful...

More excited about getting VPDS at DLCon than anything announced so far. I agree with Duni's assessment. ...D.

New Mario games sound cool, since their predecessors are two of my favourite games from the last three years. Neither sounds super-innovative but I'm not sure I need Mario to be. NSMB wasn't and it was awesometastic.

Apathy to the rest. Needs moar F-Zero and Megaman.

New Super Mario Brothers sucked pretty hard.  The 4 player capabilities is about all that's gotten my interest as far as that game goes.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 should be fun.  As met said, SMG was good, more SMG will probably be pretty OK times.

New Ico studio game is yes, but they also released a trailer last week so...

New Metriod, now.  That's actually got me excited.  MP3 was a good deal more fun than 2, but the series is in a desperate need of a second reboot.  Lol phazon Dark Samus lol is old already.  Kind of hard to tell what sort of game it is from the trailer, though.  Part of it looked beat-em-up, part of it looked Ninja Gaideny, part of it looked Metroid Primey.  It may not really resemble classic Metroid, but my response to that is a resounding "Who gives a fuck?"

Everything else... eh.  MMOs, crappy series gets a third installment.  Yawn.  You get credit, E3, but only if the class fulfills a core curriculum requirement.  If it's for your major, I would suggest thinking about switching degrees.

EDIT:  Oh, yeah, there's one thing that caught my attention in a bad way:

L4D2.  What the fuck, Valve.  L4D was released in 2008.  Late 2008.  A little more than half a year ago.

By contrast, Half Life 2, Episode 2 was released in 2007.

We are getting HL2E3 AFTER we get L4D2.

Fuck you Valve.

L4D2 looks like it is moving into the other side of the Zombie flick genre.  This is an acceptable move.  They should give us what Dead Rising should have been.

Also lots of Dragon Age stuff which looks alright.  Bioware's Star Wars MMO looks like KotOR retread.  Some other stuff.
