Answers. I thought this one would be easy, but only five people got into double-digits with their answers.
~
1. "You think I'm licked. You all think I'm licked. Well, I'm not licked. And I'm going to stay here and fight for this lost cause."
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), line spoken by Jimmy Stewart. This was one of five quotes that were only correctly guessed by a single person.
2. "I am not an animal!"
Spartacus (1960), line spoken by Kirk Douglas...is what I had in mind. However, damn near everyone said The Elephant Man. Which I gather is also right--I haven't actually seen the movie, but "I am not an animal" was practically its damn tagline and IMDB's quotes section (admittedly not always accurate, but still) does include the line. So I gave credit for anyone who guessed that.
3. "Who's scruffy lookin'?"
The Empire Strikes Back (1980), line spoken by Harrison Ford. Not many people got this, actually. I should've gone with a Yoda line, which was my first inclination. A couple people said Star Wars, which wasn't quite right.
4. "Conan, what is best in life?" "To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women."
Conan the Barbarian (1982), line spoken by Arnold Scwharzenegger. I would've had to commit genocide if at least 50% of you hadn't known this.
5. "I don't believe in the no-win scenario."
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), line spoken by William Shatner. I really wanted to use an actual Khan quote, but somehow none of them were quite as iconic as Kirk defying Khan. Oh well. A couple people guessed the new Star Trek for this. I know that recycles the whole Kobyashi Maru bit, but I couldn't confirm that it reuses the actual line so couldn't give credit for that.
6. "Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say, 'YES!'"
Ghostbusters (1984), line spoen by Ernie Hudson.
7. "HEYYY YOUUU GUYYYS!"
The Goonies (1985), line bellowed by SUPER SLOTH.
8. "Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm square in the eye and says, 'Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it.'"
Big Trouble in Little China (1986), line spoken by Kurt Russell. Not enough people knew this one.
9. "Are you smoking this shit so's to escape reality? Me, I don't need this shit. I am reality. There's the way it ought to be, and the way it is. Elias was full of shit. Elias was a crusader. Now, I got no fight with any man who does what he's told. But when he don't, the machine breaks down. And when the machine breaks down, we break down. And I ain't gonna allow that. In any of you. Not one."
Platoon (1986), line spoken by a truly terrifying Tom Berenger.
10. "Now I have a machinegun. Ho. Ho. Ho."
Die Hard (1988), line spoken by Alan Rickman.
11. "I should have mailed it to the Marx brothers!"
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), line spoken by Sean Connery. I probably should've gone with Raiders. Pretty sure I've used Last Crusade before.
12. "Forget about holding her hand, man. Think of the damage he could do to other places."
Edward Scissorhands (1990), line spoken by Anthony Michael Hall (playing the bully, which still amuses me given his 80's roles). Nobody got this one.
13. "I need your clothes, boots, and your motorcycle."
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), line spoken by Arnold Schwarzenegger. A few people guessed T1; I'd usually give 'em a nudge if they were that close. (He doesn't ask for a motorcycle in T1, if memory serves).
14. "This is one time when television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather."
Groundhog Day (1993), line spoken by Bill Murray.
15. "Choose your future. Choose life. ...But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?"
Trainspotting (1996), line spoken by Ewan McGregor. Requiem for a Dream was a common shot-in-the-dark guess here.
16. "Well, then I just hate you, and I hate your ASS FACE!"
Waiting for Guffman (1997), line spoken by Christopher Guest. Gourry would've got this one. ;.; Obscure, but I'm not sure I can do one of these things without quoting a Christopher Guest movie.
17. "I see dead people."
The Sixth Sense (1999), line spoken by Haley Joel Osment. This was the gimmie and everyone got it.
18. "They say most of your brain shuts down in cryo-sleep. All but the primitive side. The animal side. No wonder I'm still awake."
Pitch Black (2000), line rumbled menacingly by Vin Diesel. Demolition Man was guessed a couple times for this one, I think.
19. "Have I ever told you about Sammy Jankis?"
Memento (2000), line spoken by Guy Pearce.
20. "I've always been considered an asshole for about as long as I can remember. That's just my style. But I'd really feel blue if I didn't think you were going to forgive me." "I don't think you're an asshole, Royal. I think you're just kind of a son of a bitch."
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), lines spoken by Gene Hackman and Danny Glover. Again, I have to use a Wes Anderson movie somewhere. It's like a law or something. Anyway, only Strago got this.
21. "Okay, well, here's the twist. We find out that, that the killer really suffers from multiple personality disorder, right? See, he's actually really the cop and the girl. All of them are him. Isn't that fucked up?"
Adaptation (2002), line spoken by Nicolas Cage. GREFTER RAGE was narrowly averted by Shale getting this a few days ago. No matter, I'm sure he can still rage about not enough people knowing the movie (as opposed to no one). Several people guessed actual horror movies for this. Which says a lot about how bad real horror movies typically are, I think.
22. "Is it true that there's a point on a man's head where, if you shoot it, it will blow up?"
Hot Fuzz (2007), line spoken by Nick Frost. Only one correct guess. Shame on all of you, watch better comedies.
23. "Do you have any idea how crazy you are?" "You mean the nature of this conversation?" "I mean the nature of YOU."
No Country for Old Men (2007), lines spoken by Woody Harrelson and Javier Bardem. Requisite Coen brothers nod.
24. "I...DRINK...YOUR...MILKSHAKE. I DRINK IT UP!"
There Will Be Blood (2008), line spoken by Daniel Day-Lewis.
25. "Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it."
The Dark Knight (2008), line spoken by Heath Ledger.
