So this is the next small game, due up around when Andrew's finishes.  In keeping with the ideas floated around the discussion threads, I'd like to make this a mentor game, to help people who are less experienced or think they don't understand the game that well.  Ideally we'll have 9-15 players, and every or almost every player will be paired up with a mentor, who is not actually in the game and does not know the setup but can talk to their mentee at any time about anything and give help on strategy, posting, all and sundry.

If you're totally new, or have felt lost in other games, or just think you'd benefit from some tips on how to play, sign up to be a player.  If you're reasonably experienced and feel comfortable with the game, please consider signing up to be a mentor. 

The game will be run with a semi-open setup, meaning that at the start of the game a list of all roles that *could* be in the game will be posted.  The roles will all be more or less standard fare and nothing outside the list will be in the game (though obviously not everything on the list will be in the game, so there's still some element of uncertainty).  The flavor will be Within a Deep Forest and possibly other Nifflas works, but of course will be irrelevant to actual gameplay.

Judging by player counts and signup trends lately, I'm not expecting to be able to get a mentor for every player, though that would be nice.  So, if you aren't comfortable being a mentor but don't think you really need one either, by all means sign up anyhow and fill out the game a bit.  When you sign up, please clearly indicate what you're signing up to be:  mentor, player requesting mentor, or player not requesting mentor. 

Standard disclaimer, I don't want to be stepping on toes with this and causing elitism or whatnot.  The goal is to help folks learn and make the game funner for everyone.

If I continue to fail @ mafia after this, I'm giving up. I'm mainly signing up for this so people can see that I'm not just an arse who likes to cause trouble and play badly on purpose.

Also, there's no reason why you can't have a mentor mentoring several players.

Well, there is.  They're going to tell the mentor about whatever powers they have, in order to get a more informed opinion.  If the mentor knows parts of the setup, that'll filter down to the players(intentionally or not).

That said, I wouldn't mind helping out in a mentor role.

In that case the mentor would know what all of their mentee's roles and alignments are, and that's got too much potential for abuse.  The mentors will know nothing about the game except for their single mentee.

Out of curiosity- would scum players get mentors?

My stance is that scum can, well, help themselves. If you have one experienced player there he should be able to provide guidance.

I would say the whole scum team gets one mentor, personally, unless we get more mentors than we need(which is possible).

Obviously up to Alex, though.

Yeah, one scum mentor would work. Three-four scum plus a mentor for each would be unpleasant for town, and leaving scum to learn from the group means that if they start dying off the remaining players lose their mentoring.

(Obviously this would mean that nobody can reveal who's mentoring who.)

I suppose I will sign up and play the role of mentee or something, you know, to see how it goes. I mean, I could mentor and teach people how not to appear lurkish, but that would be a waste of my awesome talents.

Oh, and I'm game for mentoring if you need somebody. I doubt I'll be all that much help at catching scum...I can give tips on not dying, though!

Now if only this had come up before VtM and WoW. >_> I guess there's nothing like the school of hard knocks to kick out some of the roughest edges, at least.

I'll fill out either role, though I'm not sure how good of a mentor I'd be (I have knacks for thinking the wrong things and being lazy).

On a side note, I was tossing the idea of an I Wanna Be The Guy theme around in my head and your selection of this theme makes me want to do it more.

I, too, don't think I'd be that good a person to gain advice from (nowhere near rigorous enough in my thoughts, arguments, and research).  However, if there is a need, I'm ready and willing to fill it.  Alex, stick me wherever you need a warm body.
