One of the most irritating things about NFL commentators to me is that they equate a good team with a good QB. I'm sorry, but if Trent Dilfer can win a Super Bowl, then that is just wrong. Big Ben is a perfectly fine QB but he is not the third best QB in the league.

This comes up of course after people harping on about them getting rid of Brett Favre and replacing him with Rodgers. Rodgers has had two good seasons and he is a developing QB, which is all a team can really ask for. Brett Favre plays for a better team, and so his team won. That does not mean he is a better QB, and it even less means that it wasn't time for the Packers to move on. I am just appalled at how stupid people are about this -- saying Tom Brady is better than Peyton Manning because he has more Super Bowl rings is also garbage, see comments about Trent Dilfer.

You know what is a good team? A good O-line. An average player behind a good O-line can win a Super Bowl (see: Trent Dilfer). A great QB behind a bad O-line has trouble going .500 (see: Aaron Rodgers).

Jason Campbell has always been baffling to me. I just have no idea why you'd pick a guy who was in his position as a college player (basically a plug-in QB who was behind two very talented backs) to be your dream future QB. I don't think he's that bad, suffers from the issues that were said above, but he never felt like an NFL QB to me, following college football.

Russell is the really disappointing one, he had a lot of potential (but at the same time showed a few of the warning signs that have begun to manifest in the Raiders).

The biggest warning sign for Russell is wearing a helmet with a Raiders logo on it.

I always sort of figured that he would turn out poorly. He's actually a lot like me in a way. As a kid, I was the tallest one on the block around my age. So when we played basketball, I was quite good thanks to my reach and height being in excess of anyone else. However, because of this I never actually got very good at it. So when my physical advantage went from being a head taller than all my friends to being two or three inches taller than them, I suddenly was not good at basketball anymore.

JaMarcus Russel never really tried to be good at football, he just had physical advantages that he could ride through high school and college. When the playing field was levelled he was suddenly not good anymore.

Yeah, who wants to be in a place where it doesn't snow for Christmas, and those sunburns!  Wait, you mean like in football?

Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Dilfer's the exception to the rule. By and large you need good quarterback play to succeed in the playoffs. But yeah, the announcers take it to extreme levels and fail it up. Stop rimming Brees on national TV, Jaws/Gruden. It's embarrassing. Top five QBs are... Peyton Manning, Brees, Rivers, Brady? Rodgers/Favre/Ben/McNabb/Romo are up there as well. I'd lean Rodgers for the fifth, but Favre's also playing out of his mind and Ben's playing like that as well. Calling Ben an elite player doesn't seem like a stretch to me. Not like the Steelers defense is carrying the team ala 2005.

Dilfer had a hall of fame TE, a couple of good WRs, an MVP level running back in his rookie year (Jamal Lewis), plus the best defense of all time. That was freakish. I was arguing with someone who had made an incredibly stupid comment (Only draft linemen in the first round!), to see who and what QBs had won the super bowl since 1992, which is when I started seriously following football. Only ones without elite/HoF worthy QBs were the 2000 Ravens, the 2002 Bucs, and the 2007 Giants. The rings argument is complete Meeplina, but there is something to great QBs carrying teams.

Ben is a good player, I am not denying this. But I have heard so many people say that he is right after Brady/Manning because well he's won Super Bowls, which is garbage. Top 10 QB? Absolutely. Top 3 QB? No way. Rivers, Brees, Rodgers, McNabb are all people who carry their teams to a much larger degree, but their teams are incomplete in a way that the Steelers are not. Especially McNabb, good lord.

The Steelers are a much different team than they were in their '05 run. Their defense isn't quite what it used to be, even if it's still a top 5 defense, but more importantly: They are NOT a running team anymore. Smashmouth is dead. Their offense gets by on Ben's performance. They are a throwing team at this point and thats why Ben is getting credit where credit is due.

Super, I would say "need good QB play" is a rule. However, "need good O-line play" is a law.

Brees? Over the past couple of years, Brees is top-two.

Brees? Over the past couple of years, Brees is top-two.

Manning/Brady have both been hobbled by knee injuries so there is some merit to that.  Ben as top five is probably some degree of overhype but it isn't completely outrageous.

I was more opposing "Better than Brees. possibly better than Manning" hype that I was reading more than a great opposition to Ben, whom I rather like.

Forgot about this.

So you think he's better than Rivers and Brees and Rodgers and McNabb, then?

Rivers, yes. Brees, no. Rodgers... they're about the same, edge to Ben. McNabb... no idea. About the same, I guess? Maybe edge to McNabb?
