I realized recently that the only anime I like generally has very little to do with what is considered "normal anime." It was an interesting realization.

The normality of anime really depends who you ask.  Hint: don't ask anime fans.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Wait, why am I being lumped in with the mecha fanboys, Excal?  I've played the OG GBA games and watched Eva, and that's as much exposure as I've ever had with giant robots. <_<

Hint: don't ask anime fans.

Good life advice.

In general, Gurren-Lagann is pretty damn popular among anime fans, but has no more penetration outside of that group than your average show, which is to say next to nil. (It is on DVD though. That or my discs are from the future.)

The clear solution to this is we should instead be casting Discworld.

Thymilph - Quiet Rain
When I look at this, the word MILF gets stuck in my head.  So, looking at who best fits that term, I realise that there is only one person in contention.  Really, Gate, that's the only thing motivating this casting.

You have NO idea how very much I needed that laugh.  Never seen the show, but just being called that sent me into a fit of hysterical giggles.

I, too, would like something less obscure to cast for.

For the record, I did not expect a big response.  I know a handful of people here have seen Gurren Lagann, and since it's been on my brain lately I indulged that.  Figured we could have that for a few days, then move on to something a little more in line with casual DL tastes.

Apparently a few of you feel compelled to rip on anime instead though.  Oh well.

Did I just get cast as a main character AGAIN by the one person who'd actually seen the show?!

YOUR QUAINT HOBBIES ARE LIKE GIANT PILES OF DOGSHIT.  YOU WASTE YOUR LIVES WITH PATHETIC VENTURES WHEN YOU SHOULD BE HAVING SEX WITH FEMALES.

Ripping on anime?  Fuck off.  Ripping on anime -fans- now, sure.

Also remember, I have a healthy respect for the medium in general.  Also note that the sane ones aren't getting all panty twisted over this shit.

Mmmm I was under the impression that TTGL hadn't been released on DVD because the rights were all tied up with whoever did the original Dub and whoever released it on... VHS or Laserdisc or some shit and them having gone belly up, seems I was wrong.  Apparently it has even been released in Europe now on DVD (this month!  Woooo) so it is definitely getting a bit more out there a bit more.

Same basic principle still stands though.  This is a piece of obscura, you shouldn't get all cranky pants when people call you on it in and go "What the fuck is this?"

Well it was more surprise on my part, since I've been gravitating around sites where even the people who haven't seen it know the characters to a degree.

My response was probably a tad overenthusiastic though.

*shrug* It's the DL.  As a group I respect the DL's maturity level.  It didn't seem unreasonable to expect people not to spam the topic for three pages with bitching about picking something offbeat for the first round.  That you're compelled to tell me to fuck off for snarking about the fact that it did is pretty special though.

You're getting it confused with something else, I think (Macross?) - TTGL's only two years old.

It would be special if I took you out for dinner and then tied you down and raped you.

That you are saying people are bitching about anime in general can fuck right off.  They are just going "What the?  I have never heard of this." and then poking the more group think oriented DL members for being shocked that people haven't heard of this obscure piece of entertainment that the site isn't even about.

If you want me to get nasty over this, I will say how fucking rude it is to be comparing these people to shit they have never even heard of, let alone seen.  There is a reason you do this shit with stuff that isn't obscure and part of it is to be courteous.  As is, it is just a breeding ground for insulting people in a way they can't defend themselves and breeding ground for more dutch rudders being passed around about how totally cool this show that everyone has totally watched is.

Also, can I just say: Somebody here assumed more nerds are familiar with one particular aspect of nerd culture than they actually are. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE AND IS WORTH THREE PAGES OF MOCKERY.

Your mom is obscure, Zenny.

Main Characters

Simon - Nitori, duh. SPIN ON!
Kamina - Tonfa. Clearly the inspiration for everything spin.
Boota - Meeple.
Yoko - Rob. Kneejerk response due to guns and chaps.
Nia - Ko. Kotori OTP <3
Viral - Zenny. Angry, angry person. Goes along with the group just because. Secretly dreams of having a family.
Rossiu - Tal. Backs up the Kappa in all his endeavors.
Leeron - Snow. Just because.

Antagonists

Thymilph - Grefter. Surprisingly successful for a minor villain.
Guame - Super. Generically evil.
Adiane - Ash. I could totally see her with an eyepatch.
Cytomander - CK. Simply because it'd be funny as hell to see him in that costume.
Lordgenome - ID. Seems the type that wouldn't mind going hand to hand with a robot.
Anti Spiral King - Hal. Codes the universe.

Team Gurren

Kittan - Andy. Generally cool and underrated until he has moments of awesome.
Dayakka - Gate. "MY WIFE IS THE BEST IN THE UNIVERSE THROW!"
Gimmy - Pyro. Clearly the next generation of the DL.
Darry - mc. Little girl. Grows up! But still.
Kiyoh (blonde) - OK. The only DLer I could see bearing a child.
Kinon (glasses) - Jenna. Glasses, can picture her in a business suit. We've seen her get serious and business-like at DLC3!
Kiyal (fang) - Alex. Dunno why I associate him with fanged anime girls. Nipaaah.

Re; Yakko:  Apparently fanning out enough over OGs is enough to get lumped in as an Mecha fan when I'm grasping for straws.  At least you aren't on Team Super.

Also, I am amused by the massive divisiveness caused by this thing getting first go.  Generally leaning with Grefter on this one, because, dude, where's the fun if you can't see where folks are coming from with the castings?  But the amount of rage being caused is definately unexpected.
