Time to backstab each other...... DL plays Diplomacy
« on: August 17, 2009, 11:49:06 AM »
Seeing as we seem to be trying out alternative forum games i thought it would be a good idea to try diplomacy.

For those of you who don't know diplomacy is a strategy game with next to no chance involved, it is very simplistic in its rules and the main centre of the game is diplomacy, because i suck at descriptions heres a copy/paste of the overview

Diplomacy is a game of negotiations, alliances, promises kept, and
promises broken. In order to survive, a player needs help from
others. In order to win the game, a player must eventually stand
alone. Knowing whom to trust, when to trust them, what to promise,
and when to promise it is the heart of the game. Remember, you are
a diplomat first, a commander second.

Diplomacy is a Turn based strategy game, Each Year is split into 2 Turns (Spring and Fall) Each turn is split into phases, Spring has 4 Phases and Fall has 5

The Phases are as Follows

Diplomatic Phase - Players talk about what they plan to do and what they're going to do
Order Writing Phase - Players write down their moves/orders
Order Resolution Phase - The results of the players orders are shown
Retreat Phase - Appropriate Units are removed from the board or retreat
Gaining and Losing Phase (only occurs in Fall) - Players gain more units/Lose units

There Are a Total of 4 types of orders you can give they are:

Hold - The unit holds its position
Move - Self explanatory, moving into an occupied province is called attacking
Support - Use 1 or More units to assist another units action
Convoy - Use a Fleet to move Units Across a water province.

There can only ever be 1 unit in a province at a time.
If a unit Attacks into a province the unit + number of supporting units is added together, this must outnumber the opponents units + support in order to dislodge them from the province and take the place.

This is the basic Gist of the game, we will be playing 5th Edition Rules which can be viewed here.

I am looking for 7 Players to play, this will be determined in a first in first serve manner, the game will run after Arkham Horror if demand is great enough.

I might play, pending on when Arkham ends.

Screw that: I WILL play, but I don't fully understand the rules yet.

Do I really look like I have a clue?

Totally down for this.  Was considering starting this thread myself, actually.

Not to nitpick, but I would recommend using the more standard terminology on phases though, which is a bit clearer: there are two moves phase followed by a build phase.  Much less clunky than the good ol' "Gaining and Losing Phase." ;-)

I'll jump in on this.  Diplomacy seems better suited to forum play than Arkham, which is the only reason I didn't join a game of the latter.

If we're playing with the default pre-WW1 setting and picking nations, mark me down for Austria.

Note, however, that I do not have a Diplomacy board and haven't played in many years.  Is that going to be a problem?

Nope.  Normally the GM or another map maker just gets out their favorite image editing program and improves something like

There's a bunch of different Diplomacy maps online as well in the unlikely event that we had more than 7 players, or just wanted a change of pace.  Diplomacy 1600 is fun for 9 players, and Modern Diplomacy is good for 10 players.
