So, the company I work at as a contractor likes to quantify everything we do over the course of a day. While I can understand this up to a certain degree, the trend has accelerated over the past couple years, somewhat beyond the point of mania in my opinion. At present, we have to fill out a "productivity sheet" each day, in which we denote how much time we spent on each task (down to a quarter-hour), the number of personnel actions completed, etcetera and so forth. Some time ago, I made a joke that management's efforts to refine the accuracy of this reporting would not be complete until there was a column on the productivity sheet for time spent filling out the productivity sheet.

This finally happened.

What happened next was probably inevitable. Someone raised the question of how much time we should report for doing productivity, since the sheet itself only allows for increments of time equal to or greater than a quarter of an hour and we generally spend less on it daily.

...

You are entering another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound but of micromanagement. That's the signpost up ahead, your destination:

THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

(Obligatory "Repent, Harlequin" reference goes here).

---

I'm not sure whether the next anecdote is more or less disturbing, but! Another one to file under "The subconscious of the Cid is a scary place to live." C+P from an IM conversation with my brother (names changed to protect the innocent):

The Cid: So, I had a Star Trek kinda dream last night. You're probably going "Ew" right now, and for once I agree with you! I mean, it started innocuously enough. I was on this artificial planetoid populated by fake people, and they needed actual humans around for some reason (this is a pretty standard setup for the original series; the world design was actually pretty cool, and I should remember this). Despite giving off creepy conformist vibes, this was comparitively okay. Eventually it came time to wreck the place and leave; since the inhabitants didn't want us to do this, it came down to screwing with the environmental controls and burning out the planet's power generator.

The Cid: What is not so standard, as far as Star Trek goes, is that the environmental controls took the form of a really comfy armchair with a control panel on it. Not to mention the fact that when everything went haywire, the fake people started disintegrating most graphically.

The Cid: To make matters worse, they could still talk and lament their sorry fate as this happened.

The Cid: Also, there was a fluffy kitty there and the kitty melted.

The Cid: That was the worst part, lemme tell you.

Brother of the Cid: i don't even know what to say to that

The Cid: Well, that makes me feel like I did something right, then.

So apparently last night here on campus, the local police were attempting to break up a big house party. A couple cars showed up, the students weren't dispersing, pretty normal stuff. Yesterday was the last day of exams, students like to party and not to be told what to do, this is all pretty average. It's also worth noting that the street housing this party is... only student houses, I'm almost positive. So the few officers leave after no doubt getting yelled at and disrespected in a vague sort of way.

Then ten local police cars show up. Followed by several state troopers minutes later. And suddenly the police do the following in some order, obviously it's hard to directly link cause ---> effect in a case like this:

A) Start firing paintball guns filled with pepper spray pellets into a crowd of students
B) Tasering students
C) Tossing smoke bombs into the crowd
D) Releasing fucking attack dogs; several students were bitten pretty badly and had to go to the ER

So... yeah. Details are spotty. I've also heard that a beer can/bottle (reports vary) was thrown by an unidentified student at a police car, which may have been what triggered the cops' bloodrage and need for a rumble. Four or five cops definitely chased down a student and tackled him at one point. There's no doubt whatsoever in my mind that any number of students were verbally antagonizing the cops before the shitstorm exploded. But... come on. There was no imminent threat. No possible justification for a use of force like that. Man, I hate your average entitled-ass college student probably more than the next guy, but goddamn. From everything I've heard about when the cops showed up, the numbers they showed up in, and the number of people who saw big collections of cars conferring a couple blocks away from the site, these guys were spoiling for a fight, and that is messed up.

Bleh. I'll probably post more when I know about it.

Of course youths make loud noises.  Back in the day you used to be able to beat a child.  Now instead you must make up for it with concerted assault by authority figures at an older age.  Nothing enforces trust in authority like the rubber truncheon and the sole of a boot on the people's face.

Yeah, if that's what happened it's pretty bad on the cops' part and they'll get a hell of a lot of heat for it.

Ugh.  As much as college kids acting stupid and actively antagonizing the police aggravates me (right now, for good reason), that use of force for that?  Holy shit.  I hope those cocksuckers get taken off the force for that shit.

And people wonder why the vast majority of people view cops so negatively.  Gee, maybe if they were actually looking out for citizens than indulging in some moronic power trip all the time...

No, my eternal doom is if I had chosen to run off to the Army for radiology school. I made that comment (Not seriously, I'm not completely stupid) once in passing to my  mother, and she promised to take a sledgehammer to my kneecaps if I ever went and did it. I believe her on that one.

This is merely going to be painful.

Knee caps aren't a good place to use for mere short term preventative injury (although it would probably kill your chances of ever joining the military if done right).  I believe upper femur would work better and would be more likely to heal properly?  You tell me anatomy boy.
