As an electrician, I can tell you this is hogwash.

Also, people frequently get upset because CFLs CONTAIN MERCURY OMG!!!  While older fluorescents did contain harmful levels of mercury, the amount in modern bulbs is not considered hazardous.

In general, "X contains hazardous toxin Y" claims seem to almost always be overblown. For some reason people get really up in arms about the possibility of such a thing, even when the practical danger is close to zero, and these same people often have no problem with doing provably dangerous things like eating unhealthy foods, not getting any exercise, smoking, driving without a seatbelt, etc.

Not that we shouldn't be researching such things because sometimes real dangers do exist, but yeah. Had to rant.

Brilliant.

But, gah, all the people in the comments that think this is a real movie and take it seriously are massive IotD.

Eh. At some level I question thinking its real being a true IotD. I've seen actual released movies with far worse production values and cinematography. I could totally see some insane individual making this and releasing it.

Interesting stuff, guy uhhhhh misses key important factors in Scientific Journals.  These people aren't biased like he keeps ranting about, they have informed opinions and theories and have research that supports their theories.  Yes they are trying to refute their opponents theories, because commonly these theories fundamental different takes on areas of research and you know they have a couple of decades backing their theories usually.  Psychology in general is a far harder science than he seems to believe, but such is life when you are basing it on secondary sources that are honestly bordering on pop psychology.  Behaviourism most certainly does NOT extrapolate directly out from research on to Pigeons -> humans.  It extrapolates from human studies to other areas of human functionality.  I personally have a great deal of issues with Behavourist theory, but I can't deny that operant conditioning certainly does in fact work on humans.  You can induce temporary sexual fetishes in people with the right materials and about an hour of their time and see lasting effects well beyond the minimal induction period.  Repeated applications definitely do reinforce the response.

But yeah interesting stuff on Achievements in general.  You can see the effect of similar theory fairly transparently in MMORPGs fairly universally.  It is certainly shaping gaming culture with things like people that game purely to get trophies and whatnot.  I think the need for more research does need to be extrapolated in the opposite direction, while we need more Psychological research into the effects of Trophies/Achievements on gaming habits, we also should be applying game theory onto the competetive metagame of Trophy/Acheivment acquisition.  That may not be healthy for the games themselves, but it most certainly is healthy for some part of the industry (honestly though I think it benefits retailers and next to no one else).

Well yes, it's Chris Hecker.  When I went to a talk by him on the subject of Math, half the stuff he said rubbed me the wrong way.  He's also the guy who got quoted in early 2006 saying "so the Wii's a piece of shit" (to be fair, I LIKED that speech--that particular quote is just out-of-context).

http://healthland.time.com/2010/09/25/why-are-black-bikers-more-likely-to-die-in-crashes-than-whites/?xid=yahoo-feat
Why are black bikers much more likely to die in crashes than whites?  The answer might shock you.  Just kidding, they don't know.  Maybe that's because they apparently didn't control for geographic location, which has a lot to do with ambulance response times, which has a LOT to do with survival after a crash.  Seriously, there are enough real race controversies without making what is very likely not a racial issue at all seem like one.

And speaking of controversies...

I stopped reading comics in 1995, so I managed to miss the Harras era.  Lucky me.  Well, not that lucky, I still had to endure the Tom DeFalco era.

From some fan panel I read about on the SA forums:
Quote
* Use relationships with fan organizations to allow players to play their LARP characters and vice versa.

I don't even have words. I fucking love Bloodlines, but I strongly suspect that this game will play to the really off-putting and creepy parts of the fanbase.
