Portal is free for EVERYBODY until the 24th. If you have a gaming-quality computer and don't own Portal after this week, I'm sorry, but you are dumb.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Torchlight is half off and you can get Sam & Max Season 3 and Tales of Monkey Island for a lump sum of $30.

I have been resisting the urge to spam Misc. Links with dozens of Pokemon-related things now that it's tourney time, but this one is too good to pass up:

Heh, not surprised.  I've seen Parasect used in 1v1 ubers (can switch in on Kyogre's water spout safely, and then take advantage of rain healing and Spore).  So...2v2 uber metagame + no sleep clause?  ...Yeah, not surprised to see Parasect back again.  Helps that your teammates can heal it with surf, and that Trick Room is a lot more viable in 2v2.

Interesting that he chose Dialga over Kyogre, though.  Both have 150 special and 90 speed, but Kyogre helps Parasect and Palkia.  I guess Kyogre doesn't get STAB on Dragon Pulse, and can't use Flamethrower because he makes it rain, and lacks durability to the Explosion openers.  I have to wonder about Giratina-O as an alternative, though, given how it's better at taking Explosions and given how often Dialga got raped by earthquakes.  Although...what's Dialga's item?  Ooh, it must be Iron Ball or something because he's slower than Magnezone and Golem.  Okay yeah, Giratina-O doesn't get the luxury of an item, so can't use an item to intentionally cripple its own speed >_>.

I would hazard a guess that Gira-O isn't usable in this format due to being link battles?

Don't you just need to equip it with the Griseous Orb to get O-form in link battles?

Ah, wait, I'm mixing up my mechanics.  It's wifi battles you can't use Gira-O in.  (the game will forcibly revert its Forme, same with other pokes who gained forms between Diamond/Pearl and Platinum)

That said, I'd be unsurprised if it's still unavailable?  I'm not sure which format these things run in.

Notice the presence of Dialga and Palkia on this list, but not Kyogre or Giratina? Yeah, that's why he used the former two.

Griseous Giratina (and the alternate forms of Rotom) are able to be used in this format because HG/SS has a new link battle type (based on the format that the videogame championships use) that allows them.

Checking out the videos/Smogon topics on the Seattle qualifier, and the most intriguing part to me is the success of Abomasnow teams, which I had expected to be rare. Both senior finalists (see here) used Abomasnow with a Groudon/Kyogre lead to disguise the hail theme initially, but they had teammates like Rotom-F, Palkia, and Scarf Kyogre spam Blizzard after Snow Warning got triggered.

I can see it, yeah.  Abomsnow was one I was already eyeing as a probable anti-rain choice (being slower means Hail gets priority, grass type means resisting two of the attacks Kyogre usually has onhand: Thunder and Water Spout, and Wood Hammer mauls Kyogre).  Besides, Abomasnow did show up often enough in 2009, and is considered viable in 1v1 ubers.

Now, I didn't expect Blizzard spamming, but...Blizzard in Hail is almost as damaging to an average target as Surf in rain...with the slightly lower damage being counterbalanced by the "all enemeis" targetting instead of "all others" targetting.  Additionally, against the 10 allowed high-ubers, Blizzard hits weakness on 5 of them, neutral on 4 of them, and is resisted only by Kyogre.  (Compare to water as an attack type, which is resisted by 6 of them).  So...sure, given that in previous years "get rain, spam surf" was more or less viable, it shouldn't be too surprising to see "get hail, spam Blizzard".

In lighter news since IotD is really depressing right now, people within the Japanese gaming industry notices what I've noticed about the Japanese gaming industry:

Inafune Kenji (Megaman designer) apparently shares the sentiment.

Too bad it'll probably fall on deaf ears. There's that lockstep brand loyalty in the Japanese market to deal with that props up stuff like Dragon Quest.

So, remember when Disney decided to revive Darkwing Duck and put out a new four-issue DWD comic?

Well, they decided that was a stupid idea and thought better of it.

No, not the comic, the "stopping after four issues" part.
