Remember, the PSP had 30 launch titles in the US (which I think might be a record for any US system launch?)

I think the Dreamcast had 40-some, which is basically the same example.

I think what happened is that a bunch of developers walked out of Avatar convinced that the 3D was the next big thing and wanting to hop on the bandwagon ASAP.

That's only 6 months of development time, so probably not.  The more likely explanation is that developers just think the system will do well.  Remember, the PSP had 30 launch titles in the US (which I think might be a record for any US system launch?)  If you're developing a game, obviously you get a choice of "do we make this a DS title, or a 3DS title?"--and while DS titles will hit a wider install base, early 3DS titles will get a lot of mindshare from, say, people on the internet reading a "games in development" list.  (Kinda like how Monkey Ball hit fairly mainstream purely because it was a GameCube launch title, whereas Monkey Ball was an obscure non-seller before then).

And developers can be wrong; developers had more faith in the PSP than the DS.  3DS feels like a pretty safe bet, though (new Nintendo portable successor to the best-selling system of all time.  Main update this system is that the graphics are shinier.  Yeah, feels pretty safe).

There's no way all those games announced are going to launch titles, or even close to it, especially all those RPGs. I bet a bunch of those games aren't out until over a year past 3DS's launch date.

RPGs are probably easier to develop these days than many other genres. Don't have to worry about fine-tuning your controls or ironing out bugs with your physics. Particuarly jRPGs, where you don't have to worry about the player breaking sequences or anything like that. Trying to find all the physics/terrain glitches and such eat up a ton more time than writing out non-interactive cut scenes.

Obviously some of those games won't be launch games, yes, but just the same I find it unlikely that they all started development in the past 6 months; I'd believe that some of them started development as DS games and switched to 3DS, though.

RPGs remain pretty damn constant in being quite a bit of hard work.  It's been said in game development that on the average title, about 50% of the programmers spend some of their time working on the menu system.  And...this is for action games from EA and Activision--games you wouldn't really associate with "OMG so many menus".  Menus are just a time-consuming pain in the ass.  (By comparison, physics?  Use Havok, done.  You can get away with only one programmer there).

Now take RPGs which are THE menu genre and...yeah.  Modern RPGs also tend to have hundreds of spells and different animations for each spell, so it's not just the programming department who will be doing lots of tedious work, it's animation and art, too!

Aaaaaaanyway, dunno if this has been linked yet, but...Minesweeper RPG!

I suppose I was overestimating most companies' commitments to finding and eliminating bugs anyway.

If menus were easy then corporate IT projects would be insanely easy and not be colossally huge failures so frequently and cost millions upon millions of dollars.

So... yeah.

That's fantastic.

Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are on special at the moment.  ME1 is $5 and it is well worth a fiver.  ME2 is floating around the $40 or $50 mark (personally found the deluxe edition worth a few dollars).  Prices may be AUS and cheaper by region, but worth looking at anyway.

Tool-assisted madness. Beat Final fantasy V and VI with the same input. Not necessarily fun to watch, but an interesting idea nonetheless.

Level 5's new game; this is how you do cell shading.

Holy crap.  I'm almost unable to tell the difference between the drawn animations and the in-game graphics.  And if there are no animated portions then holy crap.

Too bad the game doesn't look that interesting otherwise.

Hey, you know what hasn't been linked in a while?

http://supermariobroscrossover.com/

On a note of relevance, they have recently just released Version 1.1.

This comes with a new character, Ryu from Ninja Gaiden, along with a bunch of upgrades and tweaks for the other characters.

Apparently SMB2 Luigi (lost levels version) and SOPHIA the battletank are slated to be added at some point in the future.

Personally, I'm hoping for Kirby.

There are, but I've...got a pretty good eye for artistic details, especially the telltales of polygons, thanks to mucking with emulator settings for hours at a time. (2xSai is still the best filtration for emulators. >_>)

Now, granted, I was almost fooled by the battle sequence ones, and there's a few parts I'm still not sure about(static nature of cutscenes), so that's pretty god damn impressive.

Original point still applies-that is definitely how you do cell shading.

Screw theorycrafting, this is clearly the best use of the Cloak and Dagger.

Awesome. Still doesn't beat the one report I saw about a middle-aged Staten Island hippie woman who shot her middle-aged hippie husband being described as "snaggle-toothed".

I'm confused.  Activision not acting in the most dickish way possible?  Are you sure it's not fake?

It's still possible that Phoenix Online will have to bundle the game with gonorrhea or something.
