A man is building a fully working computer... inside a video game. Seems really interesting, maybe one of our programming savvy members can put this in perspective?

It is something akin to a more advanced attempt at this.  It is a fairly boring process  to do by hand but it is just expanding upwards from first principals.  Alternately you can find that xkcd comic about the guy who calculated all the physics of the universe and made it with stones in the sand.  That covers it in sufficiently glib but basic enough concepts to explain.

He intends to build a memory, but I wonder how big that computer can be. How far away from the player can those red wire thingies transport a signal until Minecraft considers it to far away to bother process it?

If you don't have Planescape Torment now you do, no excuses.

The fact that this game did as poorly as it did and Dragon Quest sells is proof of two things.

First, there is no appreciation of quality. If shit is familiar people will buy it even if it is terrible.

Two, Japan deserved those nukes.

Just for that, I'm not buying Planescape.  If Dragon Quest is wrong, I don't wanna be right.  Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go trade Pokemon use DQ9's Tag Mode - with myself.

Perhaps surprisingly, this kind of thing is not uncommon among women at all.  They seem to love ratings systems.  Once, I found the "little black book" belonging to one of my stepdaughters.  She had details and some kind of three-axis rating system for every guy she'd ever slept with.  And there were over 80 of them...

I am reasonably sure it wasn't women who came up with the 1-10 ratings. Just sayin'.

EDIT: Having actually read the article/PPT, I have to laugh. This is pretty clearly a chick's take on stuff. Narrative? A rating based at least partially on experience instead of just physical details?

Not all that sure what the big issue is with this. I reaaaaaally hope that graduate does well off the purported book contracts because, damn, if anyone figures out who she is, she's going to have one hell of a time finding a "real" job.

I'd say it's more that, while guys do rate on a ten point scale of hotness, they generally ignore these ratings in favor of the y/n option.  Although of course there are definitely cases of maybe in there.  The "... welllll... maybe in a few more drinks..." option.

Edit: in fact, I think I overheard someone mentioning they actually used such a system to rate attractiveness.  So there's "sober", "six pack", and so on.  Said comment then followed into "but I don't think even a 30 pack would be enough for her".

There is no James Dean in there.  2 Steve McQueen and a single Brando which I guess works, good fun though.

Shock at dude who worked on Tyrian having insightful good game design senses.  Great article.
