Happy Halloween, Arachnophobes!
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

Locally we have some small spiders that migrate by making parachutes out of webs.  It's pretty weird when you're driving down the road and see a web in front of you that isn't supported by anything.

San Francisco did this.  Kinda annoying, since paper is more awkward for carrying certain kinds of products, and has worse bag handles that rip off easily.

We just use cloth bags. Cloth bags are pretty awesome for carrying stuff.

Cloth bags are pretty terrible for retailers to make their default bag for people who bring bags but either will not, or did not, bring their own.  Way too expensive to be economical.  And there will always be that chunk of the population that will either refuse to get them, or just be flat out forgetful.

Seems to me the pretty easy solution is for grocery stores to start charging for plastic bags. Even a nominal charge will get customers to be far more likely to bring their own. Like, if you charge 10-20 cents for plastic bags (and say, 1-2 dollars for cloth bags. Adjust these figures as you will, I haven't thought either through), it does not meaningfully impact the price of groceries but people will notice and be more likely to bring their own.

Economic incentives, people. They work.

Maybe.

From what I can tell, working at a place that has done just that, the net result is that the only thing that subset of customers is more likely to do is swear at you, not bring their own bags.

Systems like that have been implemented in some countries with resounding success (Germany's the one that comes to mind). There are some stipulations to that, though.

One, they don't just charge for the shitty plastic bags we usually use; the bags are pretty high quality.  The one I had lasted the entire time I was in Europe and a little bit after before breaking.  Higher quality bags purchased at a small fee make people less inclined to throw them out as well.

Of course a lot of people would be frustrated with it at first, but this is one of those times where I would be inclined to tell people to shut the fuck up and deal.

But if I don't get free, low-quality plastic bags, how will I pick up after my dog? :(

(For the record, I have a closet full of reusable bags from grocery stores. You know what the major trick to those is? You have to remember to bring them.)

I basically agree with Elfboy here. 5 cents for a bag isn't going to ruin your budget, folks. I've probably used my cloth bags 50+ times since I got them in like March. I just hang them next to my coat and purse. >_>

In fairness, games as a storytelling medium were always pretty much a barren wasteland, its amazingly few exceptions only serving to confirm the rule.

You say that only because you aren't familiar with the other mediums.

Sturgeon's Law applies in full effect to anything produced. Problem is videogames' best offerings in terms of storytelling would have been forgotten at best as pleasant pulp in any other medium. And no, Xenogears doesn't count as a storytelling masterpiece either. >_>

Pleasant pulp lasts and has its place.  Lovecraft is pulp, Conan is pulp.  Doc Savage was pulp ahhhh Doc Savage.  A String of Pearls was a penny dreadful, the definition of pulp and you know it eventually became a fairly successful musical and then a movie (Sweeney Todd).

The difference was that these pulps didn't cost millions of dollars to make.

Those loathed "Social games" are following that market style, they are entirely consumable.

Of course they are also an entirely seperate market from our own, so not really something to get your panties in a twist over.  The biggest effect this will have is lowering the overhead of traditional computer games, something I believe most of us have been arguing needs to happen to maintain viability for a long time anyway.

Oh, that's fine. The problem lies... um elsewhere. Games have never really gotten very far in the art of storytelling, melding together their unique advantages in this regard (audiovisual -and- interactive experience, something achieved by how many other mediums so far? Lots of potential, just hard to achieve due to boulder-like production costs). It hits me that, given how unwieldy videogames are to produce, they're very unlikely to achieve that so-called potential anytime soon.

*Looks up*

Wait, so Vancouver hasn't implemented the "5 cents a plastic bag" rule? It's already here in Ontario for like 1 year >_>. While I can't say anything about the overall success since I don't know who else is paying and who isn't, I can tell you my family brings their own cloth/re-usable grocery bag. I am kinda surprised. Man, stupid Ontario.
