Huh.  It sounded so overproduced I figured they were just major chords (my aural skills aren't really THAT great, and I try to drown out the song as much as I can when it's played at work.  Which is something stupid like 5 times a day.  Over a six hour period.  Ugh.). The fact that it's just single notes makes me respect her music capabilities even less, if you can believe it.

For the record, yes, my complaints are directed entirely at Pokerface.  Fuck it; it's her god damn flagship song as far as I'm concerned.  I can't imagine anything else she's written being any better.

Anyway, trying to objectively analyze something as subjective as how "good" music is is an exercise in futility I'm not even willing to indulge in, so I'll leave that topic alone from now.

A trailer for a movie about three people getting stuck on a chairlift.

My favorite part? The ski resort they go to is only open Friday through Sunday. Because only being open November to March isn't enough limits on your revenue stream. Either that, or that the chick went up to the mountain and apparently didn't notice she wasn't wearing gloves until eight hours later.

Hmm...your gut reaction might have been somewhat right; after I posted that, I found this on wikipedia:

Quote
The chords follow in this order, G♯m—E—F♯—G♯m—E—F♯.

So...I guess there are chords that the piano version never bothered with.  (Side note of interest: the G# chord is minor.  That actually makes sense to me; the G2#, D3, G3# sequence is pretty prominent, and in the key of B-major you flat out can't add a note to make that a major chord, but you can add a note to make that a minor chord.  Or rather, not without playing a note outside of the B-major key, which according to the piano sheet music, pokerface NEVER does -_-).

Anyway, trying to objectively analyze something as subjective as how "good" music is is an exercise in futility I'm not even willing to indulge in, so I'll leave that topic alone from now.

Actually, when it comes right down to it I had no particular desire to prove anything in this debate.  I just wanted an excuse to debate about music, as more and more my job is becoming music focused, and my music knowledge is rusty.

Well, that, and I find this brand of music snobishness silly.  If I'm allowed to like a Daft Punk song because the DJ did a good job with composition, then I should be allowed to like a Britney Spears song because the DJ did a good job with composition.  And (unlike Gaga) I'll happily admit that Britney has no talent.

It's not that you're not ALLOWED to like it.  It's just that liking it means you have shit for taste.  >>+>

EDIT:  I was going to fix that but I think it makes the post 1% funnier and that's a good enough reason to not.

Well...when I say "allowed" what I meant was "can admit to liking it without being accused of having shit for taste".

Britney Spears is kinda like Mario.  She's a mascot who has no real input into the making of her product.  That said, if talented people produce a Mario game, it'll probably be good.  Similarly, if talented people produce a Britney song, it'll probably be good.

Now, where I will call people idiots is if they start getting "brand loyalty".  Just because you like one game with Mario on the box doesn't mean you'll like them all--for god's sake they're made by completely different developers.  Similarly, just because you like one Britney song doesn't mean you'll like them all--for god's sakes they have completely different DJs/writers.

You aren't allowed to like Britney.  You are a rebel.

That said you shouldn't really like Britney, you should like her songwriters and musicians.  So many good songwriters have their own bands and whatnot...

Oh that I definitely agree with.

That said, my music collecting can at very least be divided between passive and active.

Active: Yesterday I was actively looking up variants and covers of Popcorn.  Today I've been playing around with Kraftwerk.
Passive: I hear a Britney song when I go out clubbing/grocery shopping/whatever, and happen to like it, so I download it.

I COULD tap in to only my active sources and be snobby about how I don't listen to that "lower class" music.  OR I could tap into both my active and my passive sources and have a wider range of music at my fingertips.  I choose the latter.

However, sometimes you don't have a choice.  No matter how hard you try, you just can't fucking like some styles of music.  It's not even that I'm against pop (Michael Jackson, for instance, is something I can listen to.  Some bands (Passion Pit, Neon Indian) are incredibly poppy but still OK, although the remixes I've heard are almost always better.  It's just that most of the genre gives me a headache, and since it's the most corporatized genre of music I'm forced to listen to it a lot passively, since it's usually playing in bookstores, groceries, restaurants, etc.

I try to be open to genres of music but music that's overly repetitive, simplistic, and/or homogenized via production just sounds like shit to me.

On the other hand, this sounds awesome to me, so tastes are fucking weird.

Sure.  Although...as an interesting counterpoint, I've been in situations like that, and then subsequently had something that changed my mind.  For instance, I used to think I just hated hip-hop/rap, and that I would never like it and nothing would change that.  Then I was forced to research the genre, and actually understand what it's doing musically (i.e. hip-hop is not actually supposed to be all about some arrogant prick talking into a microphone).  And suddenly I'm a fan of the genre, I'm actually listening to black male artists rather than Weird Al Yankovich or whatever (i.e. I'm able to appreciate the music for reasons other than the lyrics).  So...the unchangeable isn't -always- unchangeable.

EDIT: Mirrored, not Atlas.  Atlas is the song title.

... the first song sounds NOTHING like it did in the trailer. It's freaking terrible.  The audio quality of the trailer is terrible too. The need to shoot their music editor or hire him back, one of those, because the trailer cuts were soooooo much better.
