RPGmon Classic Draft Tournament: Interest Topic
« on: February 26, 2008, 05:23:31 AM »
So, the idea came up in chat recently- a 3v3 RPGmon Classic draft tournament.

RPGmon Classic is the pokemon-style format of having a number of duelers in reserve, and sending them out and switching them as the situation provides. They don't target each other, and their HP and expended resources remain over the course of a single match. In particular, Classic 3v3 uses one from each division of Heavy, Middle, and Light.

What would happen for this is each person would draft a full team of six characters, one at a time, two from each division, as their roster. Picks would be made one at a time in secrecy, and no duplicate picks would be allowed. After that, we'd conduct a series of 3v3 matches, each player picking 3 members of their roster, one from each division, for a given match.
Right now I'm leaning toward having only ranked duelers, though this may be subject to change, if people argue strongly enough for games with extremely complete stat topics.

This can either be done in a Round-Robin league format, leading to a tournament bracket "finals", or by going straight to a bracket.

The key thing is we need players, as well as referees willing to help with officiating matches.

Comments? Statements of interest? Suggestions to the banned list? Should the draft be open or hidden? Let's hear it.

Hidden draft, I'm interested, and could try to help ref matches I'm not participating in (perhaps on the other half of the field? I dunno.)

I'd be interested, probably hidden draft given the amount of spoilers in the DL.  Don't really feel comfortable reffing, though.  Tournament style decision can wait until we see the number of participants.

To break down the draft a bit, we can really do it a couple of different ways-
1- Totally hidden draft and teams, be surprised as things come out.
2- Draft hidden, announce teams once the draft is over.
3- Announce who's taken as they're picked/by round, but not who's constructing which team. (I.E. You know Character X is unavailable but not necessarily who has them.)
4-Totally open in chat.

Hidden draft sounds best.  I'm willing to ref if you need it, but don't think I'll bother playing.

2 or 3, I'd say.  3 probably, the only real difference there is that you won't get duplicate picks.  1 causes problems with the first match being totally different than every other one, as you can't plan for your opponent at all while after the first you can at least plan a little.  Fourth leads to spoiler teams and such instead of people picking what they want.

3, yes. And I'm willing to be a ref to free up a slot for someone else to play.

Not sure if I could be of any help in the technical aspect, but I'm always a strong proponent for RPGmon anything. Very interested in playing, and maybe I could do some art for it when I get the chance?

Option 1, surprise is half the fun with the classic format. And I'll fight or ref, whatever's needed.

Surprise is part of the fun, yes, but the fact that you're using the same team for however many matches makes it so that the element of surprise lessens every round, as more people use their alternate characters, and it unbalances the effect the first couple matches has.  If we could have all the matches be private, it might work, but not if the matches are public, and that seems like it would be part of the fun.

What I mean is, in the first match neither player knows what the other person has, they're both going in blind.  By the fifth match, though, both players would know what the other one has and can plan for it.  The two matches aren't equal.  In a tournament format, every match should be on equal footing.  So, either nobody gets to know who anybody has at any time other than their own fight, so no spectators or commentary until everyone's done, or everybody should know who everyone has.  That's the only way for them all to be fair.

2 or 3. Secrecy is pretty lame to me (isn't the whole point of the six characters so we can avoid choosing three that play fully to the opponent's strengths? And what Yakumo said about matches not being equal as more knowledge comes out). I'd be fine with 4, too - arguably getting earlier picks should counterbalance the fact that others will pick to counter yours - but that's probably too extreme.

Would be up for reffing some, and possibly playing but I'm not sure.

Agreeing with Elf here.  Even knowing the person's other roster won't help you guess who is going to start.  Once the first fighters are chosen then it doesn't matter if they know the rest of the roster really since odds are they'll be focusing on taking on who is out there.

2 or 3.  NOT 4, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Also, if it were possible, I'd LOVE the round-robin method.

Okay, so, leaning toward method 2 as simplest for the draft, with a short round robin "season" before the final bracket of championship.

Big question for those who intend to ref, especially, is what turn mode should we use? Poke-TB(Can't double), CTB (with either reset on switch or death, or both), et cetera? Any other rules that should be instituted?

Plus I really need more suggestions for the banned list.

Traveling now, signup topic will appear when I return.

CTB, no banned list (that gets arbitrary and disputed FAST, plus when you ban the top tier you end up with a new crop of top tier anyway), switches reset CT to 0 except on death, I'd say as a ref.

I'm absolutely working on it- I've just been swamped this past weekend, so I've been reluctant to put up a signup topic when I can't name a time for the draft to actually run. Stay tuned. It will be coming.
