The RPGDL Audiosurf Challenge
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:03:47 PM »
With the recent influx of people who picked up the game because of the Steam sale this idea has been kicked around in chat, and I know at least a few people are interested. So I decided to put together a VGM songpack for Audiosurf ranging from moderately challenging to murderous in a variety of styles, with the tags altered to have fresh scoreboards.

- Choice of character does not matter. There are some unbalances in the higher level of character play, but I doubt anyone in the DL is a hardc0ar player.
- For each song, top score gets 3 points, second place gets 2 points, and third place gets one point.
- Contest ends and is scored at the end of month.

The pack, in two parts.

Not even going to specify a certain tier of play?  Because people that are capable of doing expert levels are obviously going to dominate, but not everyone with the game is going to be at that level of play having only had the game less than a month (Also just personally I suck and tend to only really play Mono because it works best for absorbing the track).  Edit - Was thinking may as well set the bar wherever or go Intermediate since it is the most choices of type and is the middle ground.  But oh well, started with my Mono anyway.

Not that this is a bad thing, picking any character you want is fine, but the points scales are skewed upwards over the three tiers.

This is something I fully endorse.

I would at least say that Vegas should be out, because, speaking as someone who uses it near-exclusively, it is easymode for scoring. Smart use of powerups guarantees you Match21 and Clean Finish in every run, and that's kinda broken.

If a certain type of character becomes a problem we'll figure out a solution for that. Just saying everything goes for now to prevent subjectivity and headache. This is not an ultra serious event or anything.

I don't particularly care... all I care about is being champ of Casual Mono... even if no one else plays it!

These songs are much more similar than you seem to think they are.

Man, Vegas is like, my ship. I'm OK if it's eventually banned, since I'm passable with Eraser, but damn, Shale. Don't be hatin'.

See, when I say all of your songs are similar, I mean they all more or less go straight downhill. We need some hilly tracks or at least some climbing pieces. Observe this random example.

Meh.  Lackluster song list means I probably won't be participating.  But I'm interested in seeing how much attention this gets.

Hey, if you want to, be like me and go straight Casual Mono. It becomes more about obtaining perfection than score.

I've only played the first half, and VSM is right in a sense, but I'm happy with the track choice. Upbeat/downhill tracks are much, much more interesting and challenging on the average. But there's also stuff other than speed that affects it, like random as hell tempo changes (my favorite). It both causes a rapid color change (in mono) that can make you mistake a gray block for a color one on reflex, and can massively screw up your timing in all modes.

As a note, I've also got an Anime Audiosurf Challenge coming down the pipe. I've got the song list, just gotta tweak them to get fresh leaderboards.

Like I said, it's mine too. Doesn't mean I don't see how badass it is for score runs.

Climbing tracks that are worth a damn for interest/challenge purposes are extremely rare in my experience. I enjoy riding'em just for the sake of it, but yeah.

Did a once-over with Ninja Mono (my ship 24/7), will try to cough up some Stealths and (finally) experiment with other modes later.

I have no idea what Audiosurf is. (And I'm not sure I care.)

I just want to voice my approval of the tracklist.

You should care and check it out.  It is an awesome way to listen to new music that forces you to be engaged and get a real feel for the way a song is put together.

The is you know if you are a giant art fag anyway.

Casual Mono is the go for me also.

It's a rhythm game that generates its levels on-the-fly from audio files on your computer. You play as a hovering racecar sort of thing, flying down a track and hitting colored blocks that sync up vaguely with the beat of the song.

It is just best to show.  Here is a clip of the game played in Mono Casual, the style I prefer.

Well, you could just have the scorelists broken down by type, if enough people care?  *shrug*

edit - Well, after actually loading it up again I guess it doesn't tell you what people used like I thought it did, just the general class.  Well, we could at least break it down that way so the Vegas players only dominate the Pro bracket? >_>  Sucks for me since I play Mono Pro but eh.

Yeah my Audiosurf was missing some files, after I did a file verification to figure out why I was crashing they showed up. -_-

Nevermind, after playing the front 10 I see that you puny humans cannot compete with the mighty power of Casual Mono.

(This is a joke, more people need to play though, I am done giving Sopko competition)

And finished my plays through of all the songs.  Good fun.  Would do it again for another challenge, but will not do more than single solid plays through.  Would do one (Edit - as in make one, not compete in one.  I will compete in anything here) centered around good music instead of having the good sense of having a good track like RICHARD has done here (This way is superior, but I am overly invested in the tune).

I too was thinking about creating one surrounded around music outside of video games, partially as an exercise in getting people to listen to new music.

I now realize this is stupid.  We're relying too much on the old system for DL Music quizes.  Why bother?  We're not waiting on people to get answers in, and it's not like nobody's going to be unable to play RICHARD!!'s once his audiosurf challenge "ends."  The only things that really needs to be done for this are altering the track names to clear the boards so only DL players show up, and for us to upload the music so people get access to it.

So instead of waiting for this to end, and spending the time collecting 20-some songs to upload at a go, why don't we just toss together smaller .rars and have this continue as a ongoing challenge?  I think I may do this after work.
