FF5 is a satire? I don't think Square is quite that self-aware.

If it isn't the GBA translation sure is.  (And I love it)

Final Fantasy IV
Cecil 5/10
Rosa 3/10
Kain 4/10
Cid 1/10
Rydia 5/10
Tellah 4/10
Edward 7/10 his music can change the pull of gravity and that is badass.
Yang 3/10
Palom 4/10
Porom 4/10
Edge 5/10
FuSoYa 1/10

Milon: 1/10 Random Zombie man
Cagnazzo: 8/10 - People forget that he only has less screentime then Golbez but in exchange does far more. I'd say he does more then all the other villains combined! Just because you don't see it doesn't mean he didn't do it.
Valvalis: 1/10 Token Female villain dressed in just bra and panties. Not my cup of tea so such characters aren't going to be rated highly by me. Now if she was a random Zombie women while Milon was a bronzed god wearing nothing but underwear then I might have rated them a bit higher for the role reversal.
Rubicante: 7/10 - Good for his time. Nice name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8vz186pjY0
Golbez: 8/10 - Turning into a hand was shit but the remakes "Oh crap I'm dead.........idiots" was pretty cool.
Zemus/Zeromus:1/10 - If any guy deserved to be in Disidia it was him. He is so horrible they need to completely derail his character to make him decent.

Xenogears
Fei: 0/10. Stop your goddamn whining you fucking crybaby.
Elly: 8/10. Competent lady. I liked her more and more as the game went on.
Citan: 10/10. Hell fuckin' yeah.
Bart: 1/10. Tool.
Rico: 2/10. No personality to speak of and has way too much crap related to him.
Billy: 6/10. Saint gone astray with a sceptre and a gun. (Or maybe just a gun.)
Maria: 3/10. Rico clause, but has less plot to annoy me.
Chu-Chu: 4/10. Chu-Chu on a cross + Chu-Chu is a bad girl. Chu-Chu is cute and pink and huggable.
Emeralda: 4/10. Maria except hot.
Margie: 4/10. Meh.

Big Joe: 6/10. Amusing enough, I guess.
Dan: 0/10. Why does an eight year old have male pattern baldness?
Hammer: 5/10. Mad skillz. RANDOM BETRAYAL
Jesiah Black: 5/10. Stylish enough, I guess.
Sigurd: 3/10. I liked Sigurd a lot most of the game until he pulls this bullshit about "Oh Fei, it doesn't matter if you save the world, the world is unimportant compared to the person you love!". This is so fucking stupid because if you save the girl and not the world, then the world dies and that was completely pointless. I absolutely loathe when stories try to justify putting one character over the lives of many. Regardless of how important that character is, you should not consider one person's life worth an entire world's. This plot point is also what makes me blow up about Shion in XS2, and one stupid throwaway line will force me to lower Sigurd's score by a lot. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

Dominia: 3/10
Kelvena: 3/10
Tolone: 3/10
Seraphita 6/10. Gets 3 points for being really cute and huggable.
Emperor Cain: 10/10, he is me (Um, not really. 5/10! Sorry OK!)
Ramsus: 9/10. Excellent.
Grahf: 3/10. Not excellent.
Miang: 8/10. Good stuff.
Krelian: 3/10. Not good stuff.

BONUS!!!!: The Princess Bride
Buttercup: 5/10. Fine.
Westley: 8/10. Cary Elwes.
Inigo Montoya: 8/10. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
Fezzik: 9/10. ^.^ I just love him and wanna hug him.

Prince Humperdinck: 8/10. One character that I like much better in the book.
Vizzini: 8/10. Awesome.
Count Rugen: 4/10. meh.

I'll rate others later!

Final Fantasy 5
Butz/Bartz- 3/10.  So, I played the PS1 version.
Lenna/Reina- 4/10.  Which wasn't terribly well written.
Faris- 6/10.  And while some bits of the plot came through pretty entertaining.
Galuf- 3/10.  Others not so much.
Cara/Krile- 4/10.  So y'know.
Kelgar (Warrior of Dawn, the Werewolf)- DNR.
Xezat (Warrior of Dawn, the guy with the submarine)- DNR.
Cid- I forget which lines were Cid and which were Mid.
Mid- So skipping them.
King Tycoon- DNR.
Ghido/Gill/Guido (the Turtle)- ... tempted to just give him a good score because the one bit of the later versions I know is his line, but nah.
Boco/Boko- 4/10.  BOCO.

Exdeath- 3/10.  Mr. Generic.
Gilgamesh- 6/10.  They can't all suck.

Xenogears
Fei- 10/10.  Setting aside that I have a weakness for psychologically-driven writing to start with, Fei is just an astoundingly compelling character.  He has sort of a man-child thing going on in the beginning, which the game gets away with because you can see him actively making mistakes with it, or suffering in new ways, and actually incorporating what happens to him into his actions.  He's trying desperately to keep up with a world he understands less as he learns more, and it really is the driving force of the whole game.
Elly- 10/10.  Shallow love interest.
(by which I mean, what happens when you put a lot of time and effort into analysing the psyche of a shallow love interest character, and examining what sort of person could behave the over the top, and at times (like this one) outright messianic way one does.)
Citan- 9/10.  There are two ways to write a character as awesome as citan without it being all mary sue.  You can kill them at the start of the story and have them as the prime motivator of your hero (ala Zack), or you can give them a handful of really epic fuckups and show how they have to bust ass to make up for it (X-wing fans may recognize Corran Horn here).  Citan does that.
Bart- 7/10.  I like Bart.  He has just that right level of idiot, a sort of honest dufus thing, that's kinda likable.
Rico- 3/10.  Boring.  Xenogears really drops the ball on the supporting cast after a point, and Rico's nailed hard by it.
Billy- 5/10.  Like Rico, except at least his story arc had resolution.
Maria- 4/10.  Her story arc is even shorter.
Chu-Chu- 2/10.  Chu-Chu probably could have been funny, if they'd picked their battles much, much better on where to use her.
Emeralda- 10/10.  Emmy is an adorable woobie and screw you guys.
Margie- 4/10.  Not a fan.

Big Joe- 6/10.  Are you interrupting Joe's amoré time?
Dan- 4/10.  Considering he's supposed to be 7 or something, not so bad.
Hammer- 7/10.  Actually funny a couple times.
Jesiah Black- 6/10.  Pretty cool.
Sigurd- 7/10.

Dominia- 4/10.  Bitch.
Kelvena- 3/10.  Non-entity.
Tolone- 6/10.  Can't say no to a pretty(ish) Star Trech fan.
Seraphita- 7/10.  Gin'n'Tonic Futon Brain.
Emperor Cain- 4/10.  His backstory elements are nice, but the game uses him pretty badly.
Ramsus- 10/10.  Hey, real villains.  Again, I love the deconstruction elements here, and that they could make a villain you feel so BAD about beating up is pretty cool as an achievement.
Grahf- 6/10.  Kinda a wanker.  Great at moving the story along at least.
Miang- 10/10.  what a bitch.
Krelian- 8/10.  I really like Krelian's concept.  He's a troubled guy who becomes a great scientist and... uses the power of SCIENCE to usurp the ancient living gods of mankind, join forces with the grand bitch, work out the complex system underlying the world better than the people who've had lifetimes to understand it, basically takes charge of the entire overarching plot, and then undercuts them all because he really just wanted to know what sort of God could create this world.  I dunno, there's something about that sort of scheming and motivation I really enjoy.

BONUS!!!!: The Princess Bride
Buttercup- 7/10.  Book.
Westley- 8/10.  Movie.
Inigo Montoya- 8/10.  Equal.
Fezzik- 7/10.  Equal.

Prince Humperdinck- 7/10.  Movie.
Vizzini- 8/10.  Movie.
Count Rugen- 7/10.  Movie.

Hey, game I liked:

Fei-  Uhmm... fuck. Which Fei are we talking about? Coward Fei is intolerable. Backstory Fei is a pretty cool concept. 7/10?

Elly-  8/10. I rather disliked Elly until I concluded something: she was literally made to be Fei's ideal woman and that's why she is always getting killed for him over and over again. And then I realized how fucked up that was, that you would make a perfect woman for someone by reading their mind and then program her to die for that person, possibly an infinite number of times, and that he would basically always see it.

Citan- 10/10. Citan rules.

Bart- 7/10. I want to rate Bart higher but the game really drops the ball with everyone but Fei, Elly, Ramsus, Miang and Krelian after Solaris. Even Citan suffers here.

Rico- 2/10. Sorry, Rico. I wanted to like you but you get zero resolution.

Billy- 6/10. Billy's pretty cool.

Maria- 1/10. The thing with the robot was pretty fucked up, but that's the Gear being cool, not her.

Chu-Chu- 0/10. Fucking mascot characters.

Emeralda- DNR. Does she have any actual interaction with the plot? I remember her being more or less an entirely passive observer the entire game.

Margie- 3/10. She is better than Rico.

Big Joe- 8/10. He's fuckin BIG JOE. Even when the world goes to shit he's there to cheer me up and sell me drugs.

Dan- 2/10. I can't remember what happened to him.

Hammer- 6/10. You know, I really understand where he's coming from. Everyone else gets to fly around in giant robots and kick people's asses with Macross cannons that they fire from a shotgun and he has to turn in to a rat thing.

Jesiah Black- 6/10. Pretty much, the Original Elements crew was the highlight of the cast. Mostly, I enjoy how he underscores the relevance of some of the people you originally don't think twice about. It was what got me thinking originally about how there was no way it was a coincidence and something weird was going down.

Sigurd- 5/10. He was awesome until that speech. The hell, dude. WORLD IS ALWAYS FIRST.

Skipping new Elements.

Emperor Cain- 7/10. I actually really like Cain, and how he seems like a huge jerkass at the beginning, just on a snap judgement, but then at the end you find out that it's way more complicated than "DUDE NAMED EMPEROR" + "GOLD SKULL HEAD AND FLOATY CHAIR" = "EVIL BOSS" It's mostly that I appreciate the juxtaposition of his art and superficial motives with what he secretly did behind the scenes.

Ramsus- 11/10. Ramsus is probably my favorite villain ever, except maybe Driscoll from FM1. His gradual change is, overall, a pretty big shift, but it's always done realistically, and once you realize what the deal with Krelian and Miang is, it makes perfect sense. They made him desperately crave approval and love, and strung him along with it. He was the one piece they really needed and could not do without, and not once was he ever forced in to anything he did. He always thought it was his decision to make.

Grahf- 8/10. Grahf oozes style, and his big twist was actually really cool, and foreshadowed effectively.

Miang- 10/10. Miang plays the entire cast like a drum, and they always think they were doing it themselves.

Krelian-  9/10. Even though Krelian is just a guy, he still outsmarted everyone, even the ones that are infinity years old. -1 because having him ascend rather than having Billy shoot him in the back was bullshit.

I am kind of cheating, as I have a copy of Perfect Works that me and four friends spent a summer translating, though.

Final Fantasy 5 - Mostly a 'whatever' cast
Butz/Bartz - 4
Lenna/Reina - 2
Faris - 5 - Point for "we were supposed to think she was a man?"
Galuf - 6 - Not bad for a trope I generally dislike
Cara/Krile - 3
Kelgar (Warrior of Dawn, the Werewolf) - DNR
Xezat (Warrior of Dawn, the guy with the submarine) - DNR
Cid - 5
Mid - 3
King Tycoon - DNR
Ghido/Gill/Guido (the Turtle) - DNR
Boco/Boko - 10 - Awesome

Exdeath - 1.5
Gilgamesh - 7

Xenogears - CK and Rob covered its good points well
Fei - 8.5 - Loses two points for bad dialogue when he's whiny, even though the whininess itself is generally a reasonable reaction in most cases
Elly - 7 - Well done, but I just didn't grow that attached to her. Liked her previous incarnations more than her current one.
Citan - 9 - Awesome
Bart - 7 - Well-used character for the most part. He made a good foil for Fei early on.
Rico - 5 - Some of the subtle horror of his backstory was cool, which makes him about average.
Billy - 7 - Stuff with Stone was memorable. His sister was a failure plot device though.
Maria - 4 - Needed a personality.
Chu-Chu - 5 - Cute mascot, the crucifixion was hilarious and horrible, but so damn -memorable- that it at least deserves a 5.
Emeralda - 8 - Such a short amount of time to shine, but her backstory and all that it entails was fascinating and I actually really liked her role in Fei's maturing, especially the flashbacks to his incarnation that created Emeralda.
Margie - 4 - Cute enough. Came off as something of a playing-dumb-intentionally puppet ruler when she was dealing with Ramsus, which I found interesting. Possibly I was looking at it too closely though.

Big Joe - 5
Dan - 5
Hammer - 5
Jesiah Black - 8
Sigurd - 7.5

Dominia - 4.5
Kelvena - 3.5
Tolone - 4
Seraphita - 5
Emperor Cain - 7
Ramsus - 8
Grahf - 8
Miang - 7.5
Krelian - 7

FF5 is a satire? I don't think Square is quite that self-aware.

First off, Square of then is not Square of now.  Branching from that, I've heard that the japanese text was indeed rather satirical in nature.  FF5 was, at the time, the RE4 of jRPGs; kind of mocked the genre by playing to cliches, keeping things a certain way on purpose, what have you.

Just all fan translations and FF5 Anthologies both decided to translate the game COMPLETELY SERIOUS, so the humor toned nature was completely lost beside a few select areas (like Gilgamesh), and that's why FF5's writing seemed like a step back from FF4.

FF5a was the first to catch on that FF5 was not a serious game.  Sure, they made the game more blatantly humor toned, and added pop-culture references in, thus the style of humor was changed, but at least they got the spirit of the game's text properly, so the game's dialog was actually amusing.

Basically, people who whine about FF5a's translation are morons cause no, FF5a didn't turn a SERIOUS GAME into a playful silly one...its more that all those other translations turned a silly game into an EPIC SERIOUS STORY!!! with bad writing, and FF5a actually fixed it.

FF5 is like "The Room." It just sucks and they try to claim its a satire to cover its suck.  I don't know that Square has EVER been self-aware, and the stuff that was well ahead of its time, they stumbled upon mostly by accident and didn't revisit (see: optional character exposition).

Final Fantasy 5
Butz/Bartz- 4/10. Somewhat above a silent main, but not much.
Lenna/Reina- 4/10. The only outstanding trait she has is her willingness to risk her life for Hiryus.
Faris- 6/10. Fun the few times her personality was actually relevant.
Galuf- 7/10. Had the most plot attached to him and a great exit scene.
Cara/Krile- 7/10. Manages to show the most personality with the least amount of screentime. Cute and somewhat cool.
Kelgar- 2/10. "Grr, how dare you release the trash we dumped in your world without giving you adequate information about?" Also could have been removed and very little would have changed.
Xezat- 6/10. Did his part of the plot and had a good exit.
Cid- 4/10. Mostly uninteresting.
Mid- 4/10. Mostly uninteresting.
King Tycoon- 3/10. Fully uninteresting.
Ghido/Gill/Guido- 4/10. Him laying on his back was funny, but mostly he's playing the boring sage type character.
Boco/Boko- 4/10. He's a giant chicken with a name.

Exdeath- 3/10. Why declare someone an evil tree and then make him behave as a dull human?
Gilgamesh- 6/10. Mostly good for laugh, but I didn't find him that fun. Good job at staying in character even when sacrificing himself.

Xenogears
Fei- 6/10. He had a lot of interesting things happening to him, but he himself was rather dull.
Elly- 5/10. She was interesting early on as she struggled between her loyalty and her feelings for Fei. Once that struggle vanished and she turned into some sort of saint, she did nothing but to annoy me.
Citan- 9/10. Awesome. He managed to pull of an impressive amount of roles without any of them coming of as awkward.
Bart- 6/10. Most XG characters who aren't Fei, Elly or Citan falls into the trap of just being there. Bart does however occasionally gain relevance.
Rico- 4/10. Doesn't get much resolution in his own arc and spends the rest of the game just being there.
Billy- 5/10. Seemed good at first. We had a 16 years old who acted more mature than his age, but sometimes that act would fail. He also carried some interesting burdens. However, the resolution was disappointing and after that he just was there.
Maria- 4/10. Another "just there" character.
Chu-Chu- 2/10. The "just there" character with the shortest arc. Her only scene of relevance consisted of her pouring crap into Maria's arc.
Emeralda- 4/10. Just there.

Margie- 6/10. Good enough for the scenes she is in. I rather liked her.
Big Joe- 6/10. Funny, but not that funny.
Dan- 3/10. Annoying, but gave me the option of beating him up.
Hammer- 7/10. Served his purposes well. Rather amusing, but I was not impressed at his attempt at a serious scene.
Jesiah Black- 2/10. Well, he had more plot relevance than a lot of playable characters. Unfortunately, a lot of it consist of being the man who knows that the church is evil. Mostly he just annoyed me.
Sigurd- 5/10. Not anything special, but serves his purpose.

Dominia- 2/10. Annoying recurring boss fight which could have been avoided had the XG cast had the sense to kill the elementals after defeating them.
Kelvena- 2/10. See Dominia.
Tolone- 2/10. See Dominia.
Seraphita- 2/10. See Dominia.
Emperor Cain- 6/10. He looked like a stereotypical evil mastermind, but turned out to be something else.
Ramsus- 8/10. One of the coolest antagonists. Props to the game to start with a stable character and have him slip towards insanity rather than start with the insanity and backstory the explanation. He could have been a 10/10 material, but he needed to do something useful once he figured out he was deceived.
Grahf- 7/10. The most stylish XG character. I did not buy the explanation for his existence though.
Miang- 7/10. Worked well as a manipulator. She had her goal and did what it toke to accomplish it.
Krelian- 5/10. He did a good job at tying the plot together. He managed to manipulate a lot of events to go his way. However, his backstory is very disappointing since considering the length he went, the motivation seemed really weak. Him not getting killed at the end is also a slap in the face.

Not sure if I buy Meeple's hype.  I'm willing to believe that FF5 was meant to be somewhat comedic, yes.  I'm not willing to believe it actually *succeeded* at doing comedy at all well.  The scenes and elements don't really seem to be there to make that work.

Final Fantasy 5
Butz/Bartz - 2/10.  Utterly, utterly generic hero.  Like, THE archetype.  Do-gooder wanderer with no particular plot aside from his dad was an adventurer, turns out he can save the world due to the crystals dad was awesome blah blah still has no discernible personality or anything.
Lenna/Reina - 2/10.  SHE LIKES ANIMALS.  To the point of suicidal craziness.  But it works anyway and helps her get summon beasts on her side or something.  If I felt the plot dealt with the weight of how weird / nutty she is and addressed this, I'd give it more credit, but as is it just feels lazy.  Also the Tycoon Castle King plot was stupid.
Faris - 3/10.  Okay cross-dressing pirate is slightly more interesting, but she never really does much with it.
Galuf - 5/10.  Doesn't fail!  The (admittedly contrived) scene where his lack of memories about Cara enables him to save the party is neat, amnesia is cliche but hey he was trying to help, and the "Galuf fights Exdeath" thing is reasonably badass for the time period.
Cara/Krile - 4/10.  Doesn't fail as much as the cast, and I seem to recall her lines being moderately competent, but doesn't do anything either.
Kelgar (Warrior of Dawn, the Werewolf) - DNR
Xezat (Warrior of Dawn, the guy with the submarine) - DNR
Cid - DNR
Mid -DNR
King Tycoon - 2/10.  His plot was stupid, as was him randomly mattering in the endgame too.
Ghido/Gill/Guido (the Turtle) - DNR
Boco/Boko - DNR, but has an excuse for lack of lines / plot!

Exdeath - 3/10 Exdeath is one of the worst villains in the series, really.  His "use-the-power-of-the-void to do evil stuff" plot is lame, cliche, and unexplained.  He gets credit for one thing and one thing only: he's a decent presence villain.  I'm willing to respect that he gets in your face and messes with your plans and zaps towns into the Void etc. and makes you fear him.
Gilgamesh - 4/10.  Amusing, but cool battle music only goes so far.

Xenogears
Fei - 7/10.  Fei's wuss phase is frustrating, but characters do sort of call him out on it, so I'm not going to dock points.  I'm willing to accept destined romance but they could have sold Fei / Elly's dialogue a little better.  And I liked the plot arc with the murders by (Id? Redrum?) in the sewers as an Id thing.  Generally like the Coward/ Id / Fei psychodrama as well.  A lot of the gear comments - say, from Id - don't come off nearly as badass to me as the game thinks they are, but oh well.
Elly - 7/10.  Sure Elly worked.  I liked the Drive plotline and the Solaris plotline, though her writing was too blah.  Elly-the-savior in Disc 2 was more meh.  (SIDE RANT: 90% of the population dies off-handedly due to mutating and turning into Wels or something as a side plotline, yet nobody with a name dies, as they all had a bit of Adam's blood or something.  If they wanted us to care about this plotline and treat it with the gravity that we should for mass world plague death, they needed to kill someone we knew / was important - say Rico or something.  Not just have nameless people drinking Elly's blood.  Sigh.)
Citan - 9/10.  The man.  Seriously this character archetype is inherently cool and -they pull it off- here, as it's easy to screw this kind of character up.  Cool backstory, he acts intelligently, they don't do a cliched "and then Citan figured out Solaris was wrong and betrayed his home!" deal, respects his opponents, etc.  Manages Fei pretty well, too.
Bart - 6/10.  Bart was good, sure.  Kinda ceased to exist in parts of the plot but was a nice contrast to Fei.  Game is rather blase about the whole "oh and by the way Aveh is now a democracy I resign" part but eh.
Rico - 4/10.  Existed.  I liked the Kislev plot arc but not really for Rico's role in it.  Ceases to exist afterward.
Billy - 5/10.  Meh.  "Priest with gunz" is passably cool but his plot arcs weren't the game's strongest.
Maria - 6/10.  I liked her plot, actually.  Kind of a pleasant surprise that she's a PC, as she's not in the instruction manual.
Chu-Chu - 2/10.  One of the lamer mascot characters ever.  Allegedly according to backstory hype she's one of the planet's native inhabitants before Deus and Adam but the game goes into this like not at all.
Emeralda - 5/10.  Uh her plot was an interesting side note that helped drive in the many-lives-of-Fei angle, and Id's "You have something that's mine" quote was one of his best ones as far as I'm concerned.  That said Emeralda herself doesn't really exist, even if the colony-of-nanomachines thing was cool.
Margie - 5/10.  Okay.

Big Joe - DNR. Random dude.  What the heck is he doing selling GRNS50s or whatever the super engine was, though?!
Dan - 6/10 Nice low-powered antagonist, I approve.
Hammer - 7/10 Nice pathetic antagonist, I approve.
Jesiah Black - 3/10.  The weakest of the original elements by a lot. Dark Holy Elf argues that the Jessie Cannon plot deal was intentionally satire or something, but regardless it comes off as serious-yet-really-stupid.  Otherwise, uh, he knows Stone is evil but didn't communicate this to Billy before.  Bah.
Sigurd - 6/10.  I like Sigurd & Citan's rapport, though his Bart plot is more one-dimensional.

Man, Xenogears has one of the best villain casts of all times.  A nice combination of pathetic / cool / sympathetic / nutso people, and they're all at each other's throats as well as the party's.  It works.

Dominia - 7/10.  Id gives lots of people great excuses to hate Fei.
Kelvena , Tolone , Seraphita - 4/10.  Existed.  Worked as names to fight but didn't really have plot.
Emperor Cain - 8/10.  Been said.  Works out very nicely.
Ramsus - 9.5/10.  I hand out 10s very rarely, but Ramsus tempts me.  Possibly the best excuse to hate Fei ever, and his personality and drive fits - the fact that he reclaimed purpose after being discarded was inspiring enough.  Just happened to also have the goal of wiping out Fei since he's literally the reason he won't find true happiness.  Great villain.
Grahf - 8/10.  Presence points (fighting Gears on foot!), cool idea for a villain regardless, nice music.  His plot got a little too complicated and tripped over itself with the Fei's father/ Wiseman parts, and he has some motivation questions similar to Krelian, but worked.
Miang - 8/10.  Another effective manipulator villain.  I felt the "can command and possess all women" power to be a bit over the top, since it kind of overwhelmed any other need for sneakiness, but it worked out, and tied nicely into the Fei's mother backstory bit.
Krelian - 6/10.  Krelian's okay, and excellent as scary opposition, but he never entirely clicked for me.  Krelian is a cool customer who's read the script and seems to plan ahead for everything - including the last part of the game with releasing the Wave Existence.  This is hard to believe, but sure, whatever, calculating supergenius with 500 years experience.  He's also an incredible scientist who's done crazy stuff with nanomachines.  Fine.  However, what's his motive?  After Sophia dies, he decides that therefore there must be no God, so he needs to go create one.  And the entire 500 years of plotting is basically all about exorcising his demons from one woman.  This is...  fine, not implausible, it's a grand operatic motivation, but it's very clearly an emotional one.  Not in any way rational.  How does this get reconciled?  I'm willing to believe calculating, logical scientists will do things for crazy passionate reasons, but again, I'd like to see this character issue addressed more.  Xenogears is a long game so perhaps they just didn't have time, as maybe they could have sold it, but it didn't really click for me.

If I recall, one of the murders in the sewers is Redrum, the rest are Id.  When you see the scenes where someone gets clapped up in the sewers, if the camera is tinted green, it's Redrum, and red, it's Id.

I'll have to get back to you; I'm actually just getting to Kislev in my playthrough.

Quote
(SIDE RANT: 90% of the population dies off-handedly due to mutating and turning into Wels or something as a side plotline, yet nobody with a name dies, as they all had a bit of Adam's blood or something.  If they wanted us to care about this plotline and treat it with the gravity that we should for mass world plague death, they needed to kill someone we knew / was important - say Rico or something.  Not just have nameless people drinking Elly's blood.  Sigh.)

That was kind of the point: the party members are special and cool and so they all get off okay because they are the -Animus-. (Look at me I am putting hyphens around shit). Regular people are not so lucky and it fucking SUCKS to be them. I didn't take that plot so much as being about "mass plague deaths" as I did being about, to use the phrase that the game uses numerous times, "haves and have-nots."

The failure of that storytelling was not so much the lack of a major character that it impacted, but the lack of a world to show being depopulated. If you could walk into Bledavik and see it empty because everyone turned in to a Reaper, you'd feel it more. And that, of course, goes back to the total lack of an interactive world for most of Disc 2.

Wild ARMs 4
Jude: 4.5 - He had some interesting moments, but was really annoying at times, too. I liked some of his earlier scenes where he first met Yulie and acted as if he had never seen a girl before in his. The reason I liked it is because I later realized that he -hadn't- at that point. The scenes when his mom died were kind of moving, too. He was easy to sympathize with, at least. He still loses like 3.5 points for illogical leap from 'an adult did something bad' to 'All adults are evil'.
Yulie - 2 - Really really annoying, and the worst kind of demure, cutesy fanservice. I'm not sure why she's not getting a 1, I guess I just reserve that for the less generic, more offensive types of this trope.
Arnaud - 7.5 - Yes. Really thoughtful character and a great foil to Jude. Had some truly funny moments, too. Also...
Raquel - 8 - She and Arnaud work really well together. Their pair scenes are always fun to watch and I really liked her duality from 'mentor figure' to 'vulnerable human being with an artistic soul' that developed over time.
Kresnik - 2 - Same as Yulie.
Ethelda (Jude's Mother) - 5 - Worked well enough. Kind of funny earlier on, though there were some headdesk moments. I was sad when she died, so I suppose she was effective. Thank god you labeled her, though. I never remembered her name.

Tony - 1 - I despite Tony and I don't know why people find him funny.
Jeremy - 4 - Meh.
Scythe - 6 - Amusing little psycho. He and Belial generally creeped me out with their dysfunctional relationship, despite the small amount of screentime. They were a good introduction to the crazy of Brionac.
Belial - 5.5 - Slightly less effective psycho, but generally good for the short amount of screen time.
Hugo - 5.5 - Memorable, at least! Really lets Raquel and Jude shine, and his one-trick-pony-ness was perfectly suited to Brionac's super-soldier theme.
Fiore - 2 - Mostly for the bit of backstory about their incredibly creepy loliphile invisibility-powered creator.
Asia - 2
Balgaine - 3 - Too little screentime, too late to be as effective as Scythe-Belial-Hugo. Works as a one-trick-pony villain, but by now we should be getting some variation.
Enil - 5 - And Enil provides some variation! Her trick of making the team face themselves was a much better way to develop Brionac as more than just people with a lot of firepower. Actually surviving an encounter with the kids was an interesting twist.
Augst - 8 - His terrible puns made him quite endearing, and I was sad when he died.
Gawn - 7 - Fan of this trope. He was likable.
Farmel - 4 - Boobs. Also, kind of liked her relationship with Lambda, but I would have liked a little more time with her.
Lambda - 4.5 - Kind of the same as Farmel. Really felt he needed more screentime.
Hauser - 2 - Jude's dad or something.
The Congressional Knights - 3 - Better driving force than Brionac at times, so they get some points.

Legend of Legaia
Vahn - 3 - Blank slate is only so offensive. Seriously, get a personality, though.
Noa - 7 - The only real character in the game?
Gala - 5 - Had some okay scenes with Songi.

Songi - 6 - Memorable and somewhat amusing!
Cort - 5 - Uhh... Kinda helped Noa's development somewhat? Really, the villain in LoL felt more like the world itself. I know Cort's experiments led to the setting as it is, but he feels so tacked on while the Mist-covered world itself was far more fascinating before they decided to make it his fault.

BONUS!!! Mighty Morphing Power Rangers (first 3 seasons only) - Get ready for the nostalgia filter!
Jason - 3/10 - He's Cyclops with less personality. He's just kind of an upstanding soldier-type. I liked some of his episodes with Tommy during the Green Ranger thing. And I remember being excited that he came back in Season 4, but apart from that, he's just kinda there. Agreed with Neph, though, he's quite hot.
Zack - 6/10 - One of the more likable characters. He was upbeat and outgoing, with a bit of a mischievous side.
Trini - 5/10 - The 'spiritual one'. I remember having a crush on her when I first watched this, so I can't judged fairly.
Kimberly - 6.5/10 - Also upbeat and fun, but the ditzy annoying side was somewhat grating. Points for actually getting some character growth and a proper send-off from the show.
Billy - 7/10 - The only one with any real growth from the beginning of the series. Nerd power getting highly valued by the end of season 2 was a nice touch. His crappy send-off in Season 4 sucked, though.
Tommy - 7/10 - Hey, it's the main character! Seriously, he was the one with the most personality throughout the series. The only one that anything interesting ever happened to. He keeps coming back to the show, too, according to wikipedia. Also, hot.
Rocky - 2/10 - Why do you exist? Seriously, he just never did anything interesting or funny.
Adam - 5/10 - Pulled off the shy thing pretty well, especially as Billy was coming into his own. Had some funny lines.
Aisha - 2/10 - Felt like an attempt to copy Kimberly that never went anywhere.
Katherine - 5/10 - Torn here. She had a very good introduction arc for Power Rangers, but shortly after she came into the show, she just became a Kimberly clone so that the writers wouldn't have to come up with new scenarios for her character... >.>;;

Zordon - 1/10 - Floating plot device.
Alpha-5 - 2/10 - Annoying, but at least it had a personality.
Bulk - 7.5 - Yep.
Skull - 7.5 - Yep.
Ernie - 1/10 - He wasn't really a character.

Rita - 6/10 - Amusing at times.
Goldar - 5/10 - Honorable villain thing was kinda neat in some of the serious episodes. Pretty much the only recurring villain who felt like any kind of threat.
Squat - 1/10 - No.
Baboo - 1/10 - No.
Finster - 3/10 - Kinda had a personality.
Scorpina - 1/10 - Kinda didn't.
Lord Zedd - 7/10 - Quite threatening at first. Rather hilarious later on as the series emasculated him at every turn.
Rito - 3/10 - Annoying, but funny and one of the better emasculators.
Master Vile - 4/10 - Kinda felt like a threat again after the emasculation of Zedd.

I blame Linkara for making me remember this much of Power Rangers.
