England has a pretty good chance of beating Germany. Germany looked pretty damn soft in Group. Ghana was definitely the better team and I'm not sure why people were saying the US was lucky to get them. (Yes, Germany is historically an awesome team, but this year they looked pretty mediocre)

Eh.  Ghana's offense wasn't as good as the US's, I thought.  Too bad their defense was so much better and that's the part that matters.

And... I haven't seen Germany play that I can recall this year.  But England's done pretty good so we'll see.

Against an average German side at that. The england team was truely horrible in that match and I was surprised Crouch didn't come on for england. Considering how well he has performed for his club team I think its just the manager hating on him at this point because there is no reason to stick a striker like "Goalmachine" Heskey instead of a striker who can actually score goals.

I guess when I said that England had a chance against a mediocre German side, I forgot to take into account that England was terrible.

You know, it always amuses me that people bitch about how low scoring games make the game boring.

There are many valid complaints about how the low scoring matches and how each goal influences a team's chance of advancing, but saying the game is boring is stupid.  There are still plenty of shot attempts made, and it's not like it's fucking golf where you're watching some guy stand still most of the time.

I really want to second this: Basketball is kinda low on my list of how exciting games are to watch.  "Oh look, somebody scored...how exciting and different!  I will remember this moment forever!" >_>

I actually remember when there was a vocal group of Ringette detractors who wanted to reform Ringette by making it harder to score--arguing that it would be more exciting (totals like 4-7 are pretty normal in Ringette).  (Honestly, no such change to Ringette was needed; a goal every 5 minutes is a large enough gap to be something worth cheering for).  Of course, Ringette's problem is that it's a Canadian sport, so everyone compares it to Hockey (the lower scoring game) and assumes that Hockey must be doing everything right because it's more popular (when the reality is that Hockey is more popular because it's been around a lot longer...and was not a girls-only sport.  Really: it's not because of the zone rules >_>).

Though, it is noteworthy that the NHL switched to 4-on-4 overtime to make things more exciting (lowering the number of players trends towards higher-scoring; Ringette being 3-on-3 near the goal, and all that.  Similarly, 5-on-5 Soccer is a fairly high-scoring game).  That said, the NHL only changed overtime, not regular play (which makes sense--they want overtime to end).

Honestly...I'm not sure if there's necessarily better or worse scoring frequencies for player excitement.  Most people tend to just swear by whatever scoring frequency they're used to, and complain that all other games are too high/too low.

The NHL changed regular play too, though not player-wise, to increase scoring. They decreased the size of the goalie's pads, increased the size of the net, and introduced the trapezoid to limit the area that a goalie can handle the puck behind their own net.

Scoring frequencies provide different types of entertainment.  Basketball isn't about being excited about individual points (except right at the end), it's about being excited when your guys are on a roll.  Consecutive 3-pointers followed by an offensive foul by the other guys?  That's what gets the crowd going.

Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

"Goalmachine" Heskey
Exactly.

No, seriously. That match was a joke. England had less than 50 minutes of good football in the entire World Cup, and most of it came against -Slovenia-. Seriously, England?
The German team were decent, but not world-class. That said, both England/Germany and Argentina/Mexico highlighted AGAIN why everyone is campaigning for goal-line technology - just a shame the FIFA president is stubborn as all hell.

Now that I disagree with.  Both high scoring and low scoring games can be entertaining; it's all about the skill of the players maneuvering on the field (for me).   So Hockey/Soccer/Basketball end up on the entertaining end while games where it's a lot of sitting around with brief bursts of action (Baseball/Football) bore me to tears.

In the defence of baseball, it's so slow that it starts to become interesting again...at least on television--you get the camera zooming in on people's faces and get to see the glares and the eye-twitches they're giving each other (it's like a showdown in a western movie).  Although, granted, televised Poker is probably better than Baseball for facial expression fun.

I like how FIFA is not only not solving the officiating problem, but actively trying to cover it up.

This would also fit well in IoTD.

To add a layer of irony to that, the FIFA spokesman that gave their defense on the subject was named Nicolas Maingot. Shift a few letters around, and you get Maginot. As in Maginot Line. The most useless defensive wall ever created.

To be fair, the Maginot Line was quite effective at dissuading a direct assault by the Germans.  It just didn't protect against getting a Belgium in the ass.

Even being fair, that's a hell of an oversight to really call it effective, considering the time and money that was put into it. Especially considering the relative ease the Germans got around it. Ko mentioned in chat that it shouldn't count because incompetance and beauracracy prevented them from extending it to the Belgian border, but I say hogwash. You judge what was there and how it failed. "Made Germany walk around" is not really a success in my book.

Belgium isn't exactly the easiest place to put such fortifications but to be fair to the Line it did defeat the Italians... not much of an achievement but hey it wasn't completely useless ;D.

And Portugal are out to Spain, the team I least want to win anything. Portugal were a brick wall out there and the spanish were lucky to get that goal but overall I'm pleased. Under the new manager te defence is leagues better then it was...a shame that we have no offence whatsoever.

Oh yeah that red card at the end was shameful. Might have been the angle I saw it at but it seems like the spanish guy just randomly threw himself to the ground to get a player sent off.

And I, on the other hand, am glad to see Portugal lose. Now we just need the Germans and the Argentinians to go.

Brazil/Netherlands is the match to watch for me in the final 8. Germany/Argentina is gonna be a slaughter in Argentina's favour, Paraguay/Spain is a more obvious slaughter and Uruguay/Ghana is gonna be irrelevant by the final 4. Brazil/Holland... I can see the Netherlands taking it if they can get past Brazil, but that's a damn hurdle for them. To me, it's currently Brazil > Netherlands > Argentina > Brazil, which doesn't bode well for me and wanting Argentina to lose.
