DLCon Texas: Fighting Game Tournament
« on: December 15, 2010, 06:04:31 AM »
I plan on holding a fighting game tournament at Austin DLCon, just like I did at DLCon 2.  This will be a series of single-elimination tournaments in five different fighting games.  Points will be awarded based on how far you get in each tournament, with all games weighted equally.

Once again, there will be a sizeable prize for the winner.  At DLCon 2, Elfboy was crowned champion and walked away with a metric fuckton of Magic the Gathering cards.  So what's the prize this time?  Let's just say it's a bit of videogaming history.  I won't guarantee that it'll be useful to you, but it will be interesting!

EDIT:

These are the games that will be played:

Super Street Fighter 4
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Soul Calibur 4
King of Fighters 98
BlazBlue CS

Hmm. I'd say some form of Soul Calibur should probably exist - it's good for combo-style in the same way Tekken is and is the classic series for weapons, so usually a good one to give some representation.
As for what to replace, I'll just say whatever's least popular. On the current 4, I only know SF & SSBB, and I've not managed to actually play SF4 yet, let alone SSF4, so no major comments on those, just on what I think should be included that isn't.

Samurai Shodown 2 would be a yawnfest for most of the people involved, honestly. Something more well-played and well-paced like KoF '98 would be cool if we're going by a "must have SNK fighter" rule.

EDIT: Also eh competitive Smash.

Would not mind dropping Smash in favor of Soul Cal 3 or 4.

Also would definately support replacing SamSho2 with KoF '98 like Snow suggested.

Would not mind dropping Smash in favor of Blazblue. There was a lot of fun times in BlazBlue:CS at DLC5. Wouldn't mind seeing that more competitively.

We had Brawl at DLC4, and it was not much of a hit.  The matches are slow, and most people didn't watch them.

That said, when we were planning the DLC5 tournament, we had plans to mix up the smash a little (I think the final plan was 2v2 with items?)  That could be interesting.

KoF 98 is certainly doable, been meaning to buy a copy of that myself.

While I am not a huge fighting game person (and frankly suck at them), I think some older ones should be on the list - Mortal Kombat, or something of that sort.

Mortal Kombat is pretty horrible as a tournament game too, especially at the level of skill we'll probably display at it. I guess it's fine to have representation as an exhibition thing, but I don't think it'll be a great choice for the actual tourney.

Eh, SO3 isn't exactly a great tourney game, as far as I know - it's just something to keep things fresh.

I'd recommend MvC2, but the 3rd version of the game is already in, so that's a bit much.

Well, the thing is MK isn't very well-liked around these parts either. I'm not sure it'd even keep things fresh as much as it'd mostly just have people yawning away from the game, much like SamSho 2 would.

Eh, if we're going for games that are well-liked around these parts, the list from my experience would be Smash, Soul Calibur, Blazblue and Melty Blood.  Lotta different pockets of people playing different stuff in the DL.

I'd like to see smash for the reason I recall outlining last year; it's nice to have a game that the bulk of the DL is at least passingly familiar with and won't be fumbling to figure out basics of play for.  If people want to mix up the format, that's cool, but deleting it entirely is sad panda times.

I wouldn't mind have MK2 as the old school game, actually, but I'm okay with being in the minority there too.  Melty is a neat idea, except... can we really get a good setup for it going?  Y'know, controllers for everyone and no huddling around laptops.

Sure, why not?  Hal has a monstrous comp station and a PC pad, I have a PC pad, that's one setup right there, and we'll almost certainly have other people with laptops and controllers.  In fact it'll be easier to get two simultaneous PC setups than two setups for any other system.  Samsho/KoF would have to be emulated as well anyhow, I think.

I think we should just play all the Smash games so then I don't have to feign any interest during the tournament and can find someone else who doesn't give a fuck about Smash and we can do something fun instead of playing or watching Smash.  We should also do a racing tournament where the only games played are Kart games.

I hope Captain K brings 2 original Gameboys with a copy of Pokemon Red and Blue where the final is fighting out with premade legendary based teams

God damnit Grefter, now I have to pick a new mystery game.

Yeah, that was my reason for including Brawl.  It is ass as a competitive game, but everyone knows how to play it.  If we include a large number of technical fighters there's going to be a smaller number of people enjoying themselves.

And, if DLCon 2 is any indication, we're only going to have about 3 hours to pull this whole thing off.  So the less time I have to spend explaining controls to people the better.

And just to let everyone know what I personally have access to in terms of controllers:

Wii:  1 8-button joystick, 1 classic controller, 2 Gamecube controllers, 2 Wiimote+nunchuk controllers.

Xbox:  1 6-button joystick, 1 6-button fightpad, 1 standard wireless controller

SNK games are all available on Wii and Xbox both, so we can play them on either system (although Wii is set up better for them I think).

I can also bring my laptop for computer shenanigans, but I have no controllers for PC.  Think there's Xbox-to-PC USB adapters available though.

If people want to compete, they should learn the controls BEFORE the tournament. Not during. That'll cut down on the time it takes, at least.

Funnily enough, I generally find...about every other fighter to be more new player friendly than brawl (Which I don't actually know how to play...)

Which isn't really the point, since Smash doesn't have people that are new to it.

(That said, if you're saying that "using direction buttons with B makes specials" is less intuitive than a QCF and harder to learn, you are weird.)
