But don't women already have a decreased chance of heart disease and are the primary consumers of chocolate? No time to read the article now, but does I'm hoping it addresses that particular fact?

No, women have caught up to men. They're at higher risk in some ways, as they show symptoms differently than men do.

My instincts were to asterisk and say "Of course, dark chocolate is medically relevant, milk chocolate's only really bad for the added sugar and dairy, and there's the psychological benefits, etc.," but disclaimers are so passe.

...

besides, this is far more entertaining and informative!

The real key point is cocoa - what's been seen in studies is that it's the cocoa amount you get (which dark chocolate typically contains more).  Cocoa contains flavonoids which, when consumed in high amounts, are associated with decreased cardiovascular risks.  In the US, I think Milk Chocolate contains about 10-20% cocoa, while Dark Chocolate is anywhere from 15-95% (the large baking bars tend to be very highly concentrated in cocoa amounts).

DJ's post reminded me - I think it was one of his coworker teachers that had the heart attack. >_>

Just noticed this. It's so strange to be referred to by my actual name on a message board I didn't realize you were talking about me at first.

Yeah, I'm the one with the morbidly obese co-worker teacher who has heart attacks yet still manages to come into work and ruin any enjoyment I might have had at that particular school.

----

As I was typing this, a bunch of my students (from my awesome school, obviously) came up to me and started interviewing me for their Language Arts class. This is adorable. So far I've been asked about my favorite song, my favorite part of being a teacher, and my reason for becoming a teacher. I'm surprised at how easy it was to give fairly long responses to these in Japanese.

Yay for language proficiency finally starting to happen~

This won't effect the validity of the research since it was selectively choosing people that ate chocolate (and presumably those that did not as a control).  If nothing else it could potentially improve the confidence in the findings due to a potentially larger sample size.

Scientific method lessons over.

I am fine, I had been off work sick for a week before the flooding (same old shit), flooding happened in the CBD and I don't have work for the rest of the week.  Where I live is fine and safe, we have food and water in case we lose power.  As is, we still have power and an internet connection, so yeah, I am fine.

I'm watching students read an article for an hour. Exciting work. :(

I'm not sure whether to cry in joy -- science students! Reading! -- or in sorrow -- an hour to read an article?! ugh.

Either way, I think the pro-humanities zing stands.

As does my deep, bitter disappointment that this is the pinnacle of achievement I have with my degree.

Well, they are reading an article and answering like 15 questions about it. Learning how to cite scientific papers and all that garbage. We science people read a lot! It's all just boring as piss. >_>

Not that I am currently jaded or anything. No sir, not me.

Nah, I chose my foreign language well - it's fairly vital in a lot of my hobbies, so I actually have incentive to keep using it.

My actual spoken ability might decrease more quickly, though. >.>;;

In Math courses I've taken, an hour to read and really understand one paragraph of an article would be downright frightening.  You might want to schedule two hours.  Or maybe a week's worth of lectures.

In English courses I've taken, I wouldn't flinch if my prof scheduled me to read a novel in a week.

It's all about density, honestly.  I'm sure there's English poems about the length of a typical paragraph that would take me more than an hour to understand (especially if I wasn't given footnotes).  This is why I never took poetry in university >_>

I guess I'm just bored with science. I've decided (this week) I want to study the societial effects of climate change/environmental irresponsibility/ice cream popes taking over the world.

My teacher responded to our Get Well card by sending a high priority e-mail to the class.

He has never before received a Get Well card in 40 years of teaching. What the hell.

Yes, yes, I know. Again, disclaimers, etc.

I tried reading research papers when I was a freshman still majoring in neuroscience. Maybe that's part of the reason I switched to English. >_>

I doubt it's the charisma. My class is... well, we number 32, but I have never seen all students in attendance except in his classes. Those who are in attendance seldom pay attention, often going so far as just talking at a normal volume during a lecture, except again in this particular teacher's class.

It's not even the subject, I don't think. People always say how amazing as a teacher he is, and he was valued among the highest according to this inquiry from two months ago.

Must be high CON. It seems almost impossible he's hardly been ill in all that time.

It's also possible he was lying and/or forgot. (Yes. Lying AND forgot is an option.)

Either way, hooray for your class doing a nice thing! Hope he does get back on his feet soon.
