A 12-year-old girl gave birth yesterday.

In other news, I was baffled today~ so here I was teaching kids how to subtract and add up to 6 (including six). I had three dice in one hand, three in another, and offered we'd count them together. 4-5 year olds.

One girl pipes up and remarks, "Oh, that's easy. It's six." Curious how she counted this that fast, I asked her how she did it. "Oh, it's two times three," she explains. "Three in one hand, three in the other. Easy."

The rest of the kids had these faces that screamed, "Are you a wizard?" It was so cute.

Of course, the crown was when we were talking about love, and the kids didn't understand what it was. One boy piped up, declaring he was in love with [Maria] (not real name). Upon which [Maria] jumped up, saying she was in love with him too, and that it was a happy coincidence. I had to resist so hard going "D'awwwwwww".

:'D I love this.

Well, in 7-8 years Maria will be giving birth, and you will love it less.

Well, in 7-8 years, she won't be my pupil anymore, so... none of my concern!!

Now that I know what graduate school I'm going to, I have free time to browse the internet, chat, sleep . . . ahhh the joys of not anally monitoring employment websites for funding -- because I's gots funding! OH YEAH!

My first graduate application season results:
8 schools
5 Acceptances
2 Rejections
1 Unknown - IE, they wait too long in the game to notify applicants.

Decision: Boston University. I just received a tuition-waiver assistantship at the prodding and continual research of professors there whom I've voiced concerns over 40k+ in student loan debt, job prospects, etc. Though the department didn't have it, they found someone who did! Taking into account the degree to which they've called me in the passed week, talking to me about no funding, pessimism, asking what other schools I've attended and if I received funding there, they really care about me it seems. Plus the program is reputable for American Art, so it's a win-win situation. Loans for living, but that's moot as it won't tac on debt exceeding 70k, which it would have depending on if I accepted the offer or not.

I've been so blessed this year. Helping Hands is covering my emergency room bill 100%, I had a $2.00 raise for some reason, I'm going to graduate school and my foreseeable future is more tangible, I won't have 50k+ debt in whichever school I choose... ahhh it's so amazing!! I feel like playing a video game now.

Big congrats to Idun! I wish my future looked as stable.

I'm probably in pretty good shape as far as job opportunities go, if my recent success with getting interviews is any indication. The two companies that responded immediately were Interac and AEON. I did some research on them and they both have some pretty strong drawbacks attached to them. I'm curious to get some DL opinions.

So Interac has some nice plusses to it:
1. It's an ALT position, so it's very similar to what I'm doing now. It's comfortable, familiar, easy-to-do. Comparable, though slightly less, pay to the JET Program. Only 25 teaching hours a week (like JET). They also seem to be chomping at the bit to hire me.
2. They definitely have positions open in/around Tokyo. My major problem with my JET assignment is living in the fucking middle of nowhere.
3. I have friends in Interac, they seem generally active and happy. They tell me that Interac helps them out adjust to a new living situation.

Interac's got a few MAJOR 'oh shit' factors, too:
1. It has a terrible reputation for abusing its newcomers.
2. People are already calling it the next NOVA - crooked business practices up top means that it might collapse any time, though the company keeps telling its employees not to worry (just like NOVA). Unsure how true this actually is, though.
3. They may not actually give me a location in/around Tokyo.

AEON has some good points, too:
1. Pays more than Interac, about the same as JET.
2. New, exciting English conversation (more one-on-one) job. Somewhat different than the ALT position I have now. Could be exciting.
3. Almost certainly going to be stationed in/around Tokyo.
4. They have been around for a long time and aren't likely to collapse anytime soon.

AEON's downsides are less extreme, though definitely worth considering:
1. Almost 50% MORE required hours per week (36), and lots of (usually unpaid) Overtime. AEON keeps you busy.
2. The secret part of the job is that I have to not only teach, but essentially be a salesman of AEON's study materials/classes. Not just assess the needs of my students, but to basically try to force them to buy things they don't need/aren't ready for. Not particularly thrilled with this idea.
3. Very inflexible about taking time off.
4. They don't seem quite as eager to hire me.

I applied to a few other companies, but haven't heard back yet. I'm probably going to apply to some more. The big problem is that the Japanese school year starts in April, but my JET contract ends in August... So it's hard to find jobs now that will wait for me to finish up my contract.

Thoughts?

The only big downside with Interac is that the company could cease to exist at some point in the near future; other than that it seems like the better job in almost every respect (lower pay with lower hours = you can get a part-time job if you need to). I'd go with them, but also try to make/keep a few connections in AEON that could help me get a job there if Interac suddenly goes belly-up.

I'd say Interac, too. You can always add in "private English tutor" as a side job. In fact, I kind of think you should. I know ESID is big with JET, but it seems especially true with independent contractors.

Eikaiwas (like AEON, Bertlitz, ECC, and Gaba) seem to be very big on the salesman part of the job, so the closer you stick to "teacher in a school" and the further you stay away from "privately hired English instructor" the better off you are. Interac is one of the few truly JET-like teaching programs available, other than direct hire by schools.

... and on that second note, have you tried looking at ads seeking English teachers for classrooms? I know I did when I was considering JET alternatives, and a whooooole lot of them were out of consideration for me simply because they required that you already be in Japan, which is obviously not your concern.

I think if you choose Interac, you should also have an immediate Plan B in case something ridiculous happens. You seem to really enjoy teaching, and if you're stationed in Tokyo, it seems like private tutoring may be pretty lucrative. Or you could always be one of those boys for hire. [:

Late because of a weekend away, but huge huge congrats to Idun.

Djinn I would take Interac as well.  You need to enjoy your work.

Edit - Okay it would figure the Elves and Ciatos sort out some travel stuff the weekend I am away for the weekend to catch up with friends.  One of my old school buddies (still my best set of close friends) gets married next week.  So went away for the weekend to do a faux nerdy bucks night thing (nothing remotely close to a regular thing.  They went to a strip club, but I crashed because of vertigo.  The rest of the weekend was board games and talking.)  Met the bride for the first time and another friend's long time girl.  Was fun.  Chilled with people I don't get around to doing stuff with enough.  We all are old and spend all our time working pretty much.  Lazy.  Was a good weekend.

But that is why I wasn't around to talk about stuffs if you two were looking for me at all.

Sooo after finally wiping a virus off my comp, it seems that it's broken all the links to my .exe files. Which means a full Windows re-install is in order. Should be back in chat within the week though.

On the plus side, barring unexpected major fuckups , I should win my fantasy hockey league this year. I'm 13 points ahead of #2 with 2 of the 3 closest people out of games for their forwards' points to count. Might even place in the top 1000, or even the top 500 overall for Yahoo.

So, actually, Djinn, level with me.  If JET didn't work out for me, my friend working for Interac was saying that they were hurting pretty badly for ALTs.  As such, this was my obvious Plan B.  Exactly what have you been hearing about the imminent collapse of the company?  Also, I've been hearing about another company (ALTier or something similar) that isn't an Eikaiwa (which frankly wouldn't be a job I'd want to relocate for) and is similar to an ALT position.  Have you heard of this company?  And if so, why haven't you applied for it?  It's possible my friend was talking about AEON but I'd hope living in Japan for 2 years now he'd know the difference between the schools and Eikaiwas... but maybe not. <_<

I have not heard of ALTier (or anything that sounds like that), but there are a lot of schools that have their own programs (and these are generally much much harder to get into and require things like a Teaching degree or a TEFL certification at least). I've applied to a number of these private organizations and didn't hear back at quite the speed of Interac and AEON (as in, still not yet, so probably not ever).

I've not heard anything really specific on Interac's business dealings, just every time I google for information on Interac, I get "holy crap everything I hear is negative!" and the official Interac website... so it doesn't look good. Again, none of my actual Interac friends have gone on any lengthy tirades about their terrible jobs, so maybe it's a conspiracy~
