Well, that was American too. Conservative.

We put three feet between the PS3 and the TV.

Worked like a charm, just like all the school dance monitors with their rulers always said was proper.

ETA: ALSO. We did discuss the normal American solution. We're just miserly and/or poor. But honestly, how could we have gone wrong with purchasing another television? It's not like 3 TVs, 4 game systems, and 7 computers in <800 sq ft is too much. AMERICA.

On one hand, I am happy - I finally got my PC and it's running, so I don't have to have three different browsers open in order to post here, on GameFAQs, and check my email.

On the other hand, it's been freaking frustrating. I've tried running TF2, but it won't go past the Source page before cutting back to the desktop (that is, when it's not validating files and hanging). My legendary email account got wiped, causing me to lose ten years of email. Then Raptor from GoG keeps on telling me that the application configuration is incorrect and won't run. And above all that, all the fixes I've seen online for these issues don't work. Sad Doma.

Oh well, at least I have a PC that is more or less working.

So I'm back from japan and generally everything seems to be going smoothly. It's particularly nice to be able to handle minor life requirements like opening a bank account without having to pull out a Japanese dictionary.

Currently in the process of trying to find a car and realizing that my automobile knowledge is grossly out of date and it was never very extensive go begin with. I have about 7000 dollars to my name coming back from japan, and no steady job yet, so I'm not even sure how much I can afford to spend on a car.

Looking around at dealerships, I think a car with roughly 50000 miles on it and more than 5 years old might just fall into my view of "safe, unlikely to need lots of repairs, but still reasonably priced". Unfortunately, reasonably priced is still more money than I have to my name...

Anyone have any advice on cars? Not having any transportation in this country is seriously contributing to the reverse culture shock...

I spent about 3000 on a car and it lasted for six years. I don't think you have to be quite as picky about the age as you do about the type of car; research which cars have a reputation for lasting longer and grab a bit older, more in your price range model of that.

Older Hondas (Accords in particular) are good ones - Ciato gives really good advice there. They tend to last up to 500k km from everything I've heard and all people I've talked to, and are usually pretty cheap (my friend got a '92 Accord with 80k miles for $2500 a few years ago, and outside of routine maintenance, has been doing great).

My plan was to go to the DC area on Saturday with nothing but a list of places that might be good, and leave with a signed lease on Sunday. Somehow that worked, and we got a good place in a good neighborhood with an awesome landlord (she made us fresh lemonade!) before noon today.

So the problem I had with my iPod got fixed!

One of the big issues with working in community support: no matter how much you help some people, they'll still do whatever it takes to get their next fix. Guy comes in, someone who's been in a fair few times, always specifically helped by either me or the boss (usually me) so I know him quite well. Asks to use the toilet, fine, whatever. 20 minutes later, he's still in there. :| So someone goes to knock on the door, he's there with needles on the side. So we ask him to leave since we're closing anyways, and he leaves, only for me to grab my coat, pull out my headphones and find nothing on the other end. Check my wallet, about £7 gone - thankfully, didn't have more than that on me and had my somewhat expensive phone in my trouser pocket, meaning not hanging up out back.
So yeah. Spent an entire weekend out with friends, thankfully, which made me feel a lot better, but also included me reporting the whole thing to the police - only to find out the guy's already been taken in on another offence.

Some people are seemingly beyond help. >_>

Just dawned on me that I have an assistantship. I previously thought it was just a scholarship for a poor, desperate graduate student. It's actually a full ride, minus insurance and a $40/semester registration fee. Ho-shit. Unfortunately, 2k of my "full ride" is included in my poor, desperate GA stipend so it's taxed. But I have absolutely *no* problems limiting my loans even more. Next year, unless I hate my living situation, I plan to find similar housing and take out even less loans for my disposable income/rent.

I got an e-mail for class registration. Sep. 2! This was over a month ago, but every time I look at my prospective courses, I become extremely antsy and overjoyed. Man. And *today* I got an e-mail for my assistantship orientation, which is also on Sep. 2 in the gallery. MAN. I am pumped! Toss in hearing from a co-worker who took me out to see Change-Up (for free, we walked right into the theatre while the ticketer-person was looking away) that there's going to be a Bye-Bye Julia party.

Today, two customers also gave me a total of $75. One from an older man, who also gave me $50 for my birthday, and $25 from a customer whom I believe likes me. The older man also wants to Western Union me $20 here or there if I need it in Boston - he's deeply concerned for helping "a black girl in school out," since his children and grandchildren dropped out of high school. I never even asked for the money. I sort of feel bad, but good, but creeped out, though he's far from a creeper after my three years at this place.

Today I learned my girlfriend got into this nursing program she applied to without thinking she had much of any chance of getting in. Awesome, right? It's on the other side of the country. She calls me to apologize for getting in, of all things. Says that it's such a good opportunity and I probably hate her now.

I tell her that it's important she take this opportunity because she won't get it again. I probably could convince her not to but she'll end up blaming me for costing her this. I act like I'm okay, which is fairly easy because frankly I don't emote well. But I don't want her feeling shitty about making a good move for herself so the only plan I can think of is to keep doing this until she leaves.

Like I said, not good at this.
