Let's say extremely. Does that move the bar up or down?

Styles come and styles go, but I think this can be summed up (for women) as "wear makeup.  not too slutty."

I was thinking about this. What's not too slutty makeup? (Hope you did well on your court appearance, by the way!)

According to my sister, don't wear eyeliner.  Eyeshadow is iffy too.

(Thank goodness this stuff doesn't matter at my workplace).

While you're at it, you may as well forgo lipstick and blush. Foundation is a stretch -- op! No makeup! That'll work.

<_<

Someone's always going to find fault if they want to. Being female includes being constantly, silently (or not so silently) judged by appearance.

Blush...yeah, I have heard not to be excessive with blush in a work setting.

Never heard anyone speak out against lipstick or mascara, though.  (And I can't imagine anyone having an issue with foundation or concealer.  The point of those two is that you don't even notice them).

EDIT: And...what's left...lip gloss and eyeshadow?  Yeah, both of those sound iffy in a work setting, unless they're unusually subtle.

Mascara, foundation and concealer are the only ones I can think of where no one is likely to comment. They're mainly meant to be, as you say, subtle: enhance or conceal.

Lipstick, eyeshadow, blush, eyeliner -- all of these are decoration. ANY combination of these is likely to set someone off. I grew up hearing my grandparents' friends disparage the girls with blush because it was unseemly. Lipstick just draws attention to your whore mouth. Eyeshadow has ALL SORTS of terrible hooker connotations, especially the non-skin tone colors (e.g., blue). Eyeliner, too, gets a reputation for being glommed on to make the eyes obscenely painted.

By my observation, the difference between "slutty makeup" and "normal makeup" is a matter of degrees. Light eyeliner, neutral eyeshadow, a touch of blush? These are plenty work-safe. Heavy eyeliner, bright eyeshadow, red lipstick? Whore. Heavy eyeliner, no other makeup? Emo. Red lipstick, nothing else? Model wanna-be aka whore.

It's a fucking brutal damned if you do, damned if you don't world for makeup. The best application is the one that looks as if you're not wearing any makeup at all. Which is a damnable lie, of course, but it's pretty much the same thing people have always been asking of girls: be pretty when I want to look at you, but not obtrusive when I don't.

Well! I was thinking that I really can't think of "slutty" in my definition. I can think of trainwreck makeup, straight up: (yo... is her eyelash flying off??).

I used to put on makeup (eyeshadow, eyeliner, and this *invisible* (really) foundation that removes oil from my face). I just don't anymore. I'm way too fucking busy -- I have to frickin schedule showering. I used to do my hair also. Slowly growing into a wooly mammoth over here.

There's three things I need to get done: I need someone to thread my bushy ass eyebrows, get my nails done AND my toes curated for the winter. I've been *EXTRA* nervous the past few weeks, and have bitten my nails much shorter than I would like. ): I need to get mah groove back. I can't believe I lost it in a month.

Now I *have* been considering wearing bright red lipstick*.

Let's say extremely. Does that move the bar up or down?

If the viewer is -also- extremely hypocritical alongside sexist, the bar goes all the way to "being a woman is too slutty", also depending on factors like "did she go to bed with someone else instead of me".

EDIT:

In other news: job promotion is now 100% official. Fuck yes.

"did she go to bed with someone else instead of me".

Clearly, that's not slutty enough.  Where sluttiness is concerned, you've got to hit the sweet spot to...you know what, I'll just stop now.

Yeah, I've known a lot of women who've gone through that kind of misogyny.  "You're female, and my manager?  YOU MUST HAVE SLEPT YOUR WAY TO THE TOP.  I'm going to ignore all your instructions and report directly to your boss instead of you."

Hasn't come up for me yet because nobody puts me in charge of anything.

This is where hilarity enters: my company is 80% female, including nearly all of the management team.

A few weeks ago I sent in an application to a company that does in-depth policy coverage in a bunch of niches - environmental laws, defense, the budget, etc. Last week I got an e-mail from the editor asking for writing samples. Today I had a 15-minute conversation with their publisher that ended with an invitation to an in-person interview. At 2 PM. Today.

Holy shit holy shit holy shit.

Grats Shale.

And yeah that kind of misoginy baffles me.  If I did that with my boss I would be reporting to yet another woman who reports to another woman.  Most of the management team in my department are female.  It is people management, why the fuck would you think that a woman would be exceptionally bad at that because of gender?  Men and women are both just at bad at it as each other.

I need a new place. :( Friend of mine's been looking for a 2/3-room place lately, but I really need to get out of here soon, so might have to pressure that more.
Just got home at nearly midnight to find my landlord's dog has been in my room, has knocked things (and by things, I mean consoles, games and Magic cards, so not cheap things) around the fucking place, and has pissed everywhere, including on the fucking PS2 and my bed. No idea when this happened, since I've been out since about 5pm, but the landlord apparently did nothing about it. About to put everything in the wash, then sleep on a sofa without covers. Fun times.
(In true British style, I am leaving him a very angry note.)

EDIT: Gref: people can so easily and unconsciously be bafflingly sexist, but you know that. Hey guys basically an entire civilization's worth of cultural patriarchalism ingrained into the collective's tiny little brain doesn't really wipe in an interval of a hundred and a half years.

Yay Shale!! (: Yay!

I just started laughing to myself. I love old, witty women. I can't stop thinking about Jim's mom. Like. Either I will marry Jim to get to his mom, or like, I dunno.. see if his parents dig an open relationship.

My advisor is so adorable too.

I love old women.

Hehehehe. So adorable.
