Oh man, that blows. Better than suffering through a job you hate but man does it suck when life gives you nothing but shitty options.

Good luck.

As usual, misfortune falls upon the rest of us while Shale laughs and pats us on the head, offering pithy condolences as he coasts through life.

Beating the horse long after it's dead is the only way to get that unique scent to start with.

OK: Always quick on the trigger.

On a slightly different note, my car is now working fine and has done so for a month. Any bets on how long till it explodes?

So my little brother is driving us to class today. We're on 64 driving west when traffic just literally stops out of nowhere. Some deplorable idiot decided that it'd be good idea to go 35 in the fast lane! Traffic suddenly stops. Brother breaks but it's way, way too late to stop the car, so I look quickly to my right, yell 'change lanes', and he manages to (while breaking still) change lanes right before he would have slammed into the car. So glad I was paying attention, or I'd likely be in the hospital right now in the best of circumstances.

I'd just like to give a FUCK YOU to the idiot who nearly caused a multicar pileup by dicking around on their cell phone or driving with their feet or fucking with their radio instead of driving.

Signing up for my final semester's worth of classes tomorrow.  Hard to believe I'm already nearing the end of law school.  Time really flies.

An agent requested a sample of by far my best novel to date, which unfortunately is too long to be readily salable in its genre and so usually gets unsold by its query letter. This is the first time I've managed to get the actual work in someone's hands, even if only the first 50 pages.

Spent the week going through it and polishing it up.

Heard today that she decided not to take the rest.

First and foremost: Congratulations for the follow-up! That's pretty awesome.

Condolences on the ultimate answer, but a bite like that -- requesting pages! -- is a great positive step. Keep at it. :)

Applied for promotion today. This time it got advertised while I was out of state and my manager was on leave.  It was being advertised for a week, found out yesterday.  Closes on Monday.  I know it isn't personal bit goddamn sometimes I feels like they are trying to tell me something.

I've gotten this far before (plus actually selling nonfiction). Striking out on a novel I consider a solid, workmanlike piece is Tuesday. This one hits harder than most because it's the only novel I've written in the last half-decade that I really put a lot of heart into, rather than writing to what was popular, and this agent specifically wanted the genre and even cited the same author I would as a close equivalent.

Nonetheless, thanks for the encouraging words, and, indeed, I do feel better about it by now. I never expected a 200,000 word novel to even get looked at in this market; it's not even the main one I'm shopping at the moment.

It doesn't matter whether it's your first bite or your tenth - getting a bite at all means you're doing what you need to be doing, and you just haven't found the person to take it on with you. Managing to get bites more than once just means you're a good writer no matter what you're taking on.

But yeah, I totally dig how crushing it feels to have something personal let down like that. So does Andy: he had his first short story submission rejected and he stopped writing altogether for months. <_<

Back on the horse, etc.

Good luck. :)
