« on: March 24, 2011, 02:30:18 AM »

Trigun OP (H.T.) vs. Ranma 1/2 OP1
I wish Trigun mixed it up a bit more - the music is a wee bit repetitive, as are Vash's badass poses, but it's solid.  Ranma's is also catchy but the art style is weirdly worse than the show, and too much dancing Akane + zoom in on her short shorts.  Buh.
Speed Racer OP vs. Eureka Seven OP4 (Sakura)
Slaughter.  Eureka 7's opening was shockingly badass.  If only the singer was better, the backup instruments are great, as are the opening visuals.
Rune Soldie Louie OP (Twinkle Trick) vs. Great Mazinger OP
Nothing special about Louie and very dated.  Mazinger at least has exploding insets.
Key the Metal Idol OP (In the Night) vs. Eden of the East OP (Falling Down)
I like Key's opening a good deal, though it's a wee bit slow to get started.  Still, easy vote.

GaoGaiGar Grand Glorious Gathering OP (Yuusha-oh Tanjou! -Grand Glorious Gathering Version-) vs. Bleach OP13 (Melody of the Wild Dance)
More meh giant robots.  Unexpeted OP for Bleach, though, doesn't seem to fit with the tone of the show.
Naruto OP2 (Haruka Kanata) vs. Tsukihime OP (The Sacred Moon)
Wow.  That singer for Naruto...  sucks.  Not great visuals either.  Another slaughter.
Yumekui Merry OP (Daydream Syndrome) vs. Macross II OP (The Hush of 200 Million Years)
Macross's opening is okay (although the clothes disintegrating as that one girl runs is strange).  Yumekui Merry's is just really neat though, even if the fashion sense of these ladies is nonexistent and fanservicey.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP (Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru) vs. Yu Yu Hakusho English OP1
They're both good but not great (although SZS's is a bit creepy).

Endings
Tenchi Muyo English ED1 (Talent for Love) vs. Chobits ED2 (Ningyo Hime)
Tenchi Muyo's is pretty darn good.
Azumanga Daioh ED (Raspberry Heaven) vs. Basquash ED 2 (Futari no Yokusoku)
Fear the basketball robot and its backup singers?  Easy vote anyway, I'll take active.
Gankutsuou ED (You Wont See Me Coming) vs. Freezing ED (Kimi wo Mamoritai)
Fun + good visuals vs. Ken Burns effect on softcore anime porn.  Uh huh.
Turn A Gundam ED (Tsuki no Mayu) vs. .hack//SIGN ED (Yasashii Yoake)
Yasashii Yoake is one of my personal favorite songs ever, so tough match for Turn A.  I think the short-version of Yasashii Yoake still works great, while Tsuki no Mayu needs the long 4 minute version to be at its best anyway.  And .hack//SIGN wins on visuals anyway, too.

Openings
Trigun OP (H.T.) vs. Ranma 1/2 OP1 - Never was a fan of the first Ranma OP...
Speed Racer OP vs. Eureka Seven OP4 (Sakura) - Nostalgia and camp doesn't beat active quality.
Rune Soldie Louie OP (Twinkle Trick) vs. Great Mazinger OP - Twinkle Trick is generic and the visuals are average if somewhat adorable, but I've always had a soft spot for it for some reason. Mazinger... Gekigengar V's OP, which is clearly based on it, was better. Also, Daiguard has the better refrain.
Key the Metal Idol OP (In the Night) vs. Eden of the East OP (Falling Down) - Easy choice, and I like the Key OP.

GaoGaiGar Grand Glorious Gathering OP (Yuusha-oh Tanjou! -Grand Glorious Gathering Version-) vs. Bleach OP13 (Melody of the Wild Dance) - Surprise, Bleach has really good OPs.

Naruto OP2 (Haruka Kanata) vs. Tsukihime OP (The Sacred Moon) - I like Tsukihime's but Naruto's is a personal fav (Ahhh ASIC memories + song gets me pumped) and is also incredibly successful at something that is often completely messed up, which is getting the audience familiar with a bunch of new characters. Oftentimes it leads to the OP being incredibly rushed but this actually does time management pretty well and the concept is well pulled off.

Yumekui Merry OP (Daydream Syndrome) vs. Macross II OP (The Hush of 200 Million Years) - Surprisingly good and makes me want to seek out the show > Decent but uninspiring
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP (Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru) vs. Yu Yu Hakusho English OP1 - ... closer than I thought this'd be. I might have to coinflip this. EDIT: COINFLIPPED

Endings
Tenchi Muyo English ED1 (Talent for Love) vs. Chobits ED2 (Ningyo Hime) - Song has it's moments, but the visuals are hilarious and totally make this. You'd never guess that's a girl cabbit!
Azumanga Daioh ED (Raspberry Heaven) vs. Basquash ED 2 (Futari no Yokusoku) - Much more fun
Gankutsuou ED (You Wont See Me Coming) vs. Freezing ED (Kimi wo Mamoritai) - Easy
Turn A Gundam ED (Tsuki no Mayu) vs. .hack//SIGN ED (Yasashii Yoake) - I actually had to rewatch .hack's to judge this. Turn A's was surprisingly good, but the visuals doom it.

Openings
Trigun OP (H.T.) vs. Ranma 1/2 OP1 - I'd forgotten how much fun this one was.  I like Ranma's first opening, but yeah.
Speed Racer OP vs. Eureka Seven OP4 (Sakura) - Hate Amazing Grace.
Rune Soldie Louie OP (Twinkle Trick) vs. Great Mazinger OP - this really pains me.  I don't know if it's poor sound editing, syrupy singing, or bad tuning, but Twinkle Trick fails to impress technically.  I always giggle at that little sound studio cameo, though.
Key the Metal Idol OP (In the Night) vs. Eden of the East OP (Falling Down) - Oasis is messing with true greatness here.

GaoGaiGar Grand Glorious Gathering OP (Yuusha-oh Tanjou! -Grand Glorious Gathering Version-) vs. Bleach OP13 (Melody of the Wild Dance) - there have been some surprisingly good giant robot openings in this competition.  there's been this one, too.
Naruto OP2 (Haruka Kanata) vs. Tsukihime OP (The Sacred Moon) - So much fun to scream along to, and it has some expert timing between video and music, too.  Absolute quality.
Yumekui Merry OP (Daydream Syndrome) vs. Macross II OP (The Hush of 200 Million Years) - well.  this is surprisingly difficult.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP (Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru) vs. Yu Yu Hakusho English OP1 - the bondage is a bit much, but the video gets points for creativity.

Endings
Tenchi Muyo English ED1 (Talent for Love) vs. Chobits ED2 (Ningyo Hime)
Azumanga Daioh ED (Raspberry Heaven) vs. Basquash ED 2 (Futari no Yokusoku)
Gankutsuou ED (You Wont See Me Coming) vs. Freezing ED (Kimi wo Mamoritai) - Vampires and Glam > Cheeseburgers and Cheesecake.  Expressing it like that may lead you to believe that this was close.  It wasn't.
Turn A Gundam ED (Tsuki no Mayu) vs. .hack//SIGN ED (Yasashii Yoake)

Trigun OP (H.T.) vs. Ranma 1/2 OP1
Speed Racer OP vs. Eureka Seven OP4 (Sakura)  - Eureka Seven has... some good elements, though plenty to dislike as well.  Speed racer is just so... dated.  Not really even retro, it just seems old.
Rune Soldie Louie OP (Twinkle Trick) vs. Great Mazinger OP  - See, you can be cheesey and retro and not seem old.  More than that though, Louie seems like Slayers without the personality.  Also also, every character seems to be a man with breasts, kinda creepy.
Key the Metal Idol OP (In the Night) vs. Eden of the East OP (Falling Down)- 'salright.  In the Night seems trippy for the sake of trippiness.

GaoGaiGar Grand Glorious Gathering OP (Yuusha-oh Tanjou! -Grand Glorious Gathering Version-) vs. Bleach OP13 (Melody of the Wild Dance) - Close, GGG loses energy here and there, but on the whole it's hard to argue with JAM project.
Naruto OP2 (Haruka Kanata) vs. Tsukihime OP (The Sacred Moon)
Yumekui Merry OP (Daydream Syndrome) vs. Macross II OP (The Hush of 200 Million Years)- For some reason it reminds me of Touhou.  And Touhou without zunhorns is often a winner.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP (Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru) vs. Yu Yu Hakusho English OP1

Endings
Tenchi Muyo English ED1 (Talent for Love) vs. Chobits ED2 (Ningyo Hime)  - Eh.  Tenchi song does nothing for me.
Azumanga Daioh ED (Raspberry Heaven) vs. Basquash ED 2 (Futari no Yokusoku)  - Man, this is WAY better than our goofy basketball cartoon music.
Gankutsuou ED (You Wont See Me Coming) vs. Freezing ED (Kimi wo Mamoritai)  - Isn't loligoth ecchi.
Turn A Gundam ED (Tsuki no Mayu) vs. .hack//SIGN ED (Yasashii Yoake)

I thought the same thing.  About 8 seconds in, listen for repeated notes in the background that goes C F G B-flat (1 4 5 minor7).  It's the same progression from Touhou games' title screens except that Touhou's version goes back down again instead of just repeating.

The character designs have a certain Gensokyo feel to them too, but yeah the song sounded like you added vocals to a zun song.

The Yumekui Merry op probably sounds like Toho music because IOSYS composed it (and the ending).

Trigun OP (H.T.) vs. Ranma 1/2 OP1 : For all that I want to like H.T. more, it just has several shots that really annoy me and it feels like it fails to deliver off its very strong sounds.

Speed Racer OP vs. Eureka Seven OP4 (Sakura) : Slaughter. Very Competent OP vs... Nostalgia/Hilarity Value.

Rune Soldie Louie OP (Twinkle Trick) vs. Great Mazinger OP : I'll give credit to Great Mazinger for being an old OP that was solid. Unfortunately, budget and newness wins out still. Twinkle Trick is, like Sakura, a very competent OP.

Key the Metal Idol OP (In the Night) vs. Eden of the East OP (Falling Down): Good match! Despite my bias against slow, the haunting imagery of In The Night is enough to push it ahead of the still solid Falling Down.

GaoGaiGar Grand Glorious Gathering OP (Yuusha-oh Tanjou! -Grand Glorious Gathering Version-) vs. Bleach OP13 (Melody of the Wild Dance) : Slaughter, part the second. GGG suffers pretty heavily from (as far as I can tell) being a clip opening. Huge tracts of the opening are just very weak visually and do absolutely nothing with the strong and silly super robot style opening. It really outlasts its welcome. Melody of the Wild Dance is very pretty and, although it suffers from a bit of music/visual dissonance in a couple spots, slaughters handily.

Naruto OP2 (Haruka Kanata) vs. Tsukihime OP (The Sacred Moon): Soppy vote.

Yumekui Merry OP (Daydream Syndrome) vs. Macross II OP (The Hush of 200 Million Years): Decided I wanted to watch Yumekui Merry after this, so what else could you ask for in an opening?

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP (Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru) vs. Yu Yu Hakusho English OP1: Despite YYH being a favorite, I have no idea what I just watched with SZS but it was a hell of an OP.

Endings: I hate this bracket and, thankfully, lunch just ended. I'll come back.

Tenchi Muyo English ED1 (Talent for Love) vs. Chobits ED2 (Ningyo Hime): Animation wins out.

Azumanga Daioh ED (Raspberry Heaven) vs. Basquash ED 2 (Futari no Yokusoku) : More energy.

Gankutsuou ED (You Wont See Me Coming) vs. Freezing ED (Kimi wo Mamoritai): Actually good ED vs average ED.

Turn A Gundam ED (Tsuki no Mayu) vs. .hack//SIGN ED (Yasashii Yoake) : 'cause
