If his cervical fusion goes badly he might have to retire. He's undergoing the same procedure that Edge, the WWF wrestler, underwent earlier this year, and he had to retire because it didn't heal right, and as a result, one blow to the head can kill him pretty easy.

From the reports I've seen, Manning's operation is a one-level anterior fusion, much less intensive than the two-level procedure Edge went through. That bodes.....maybe not "well," exactly, but better.

I wouldn't be surprised, unless Collins somehow pulls a miracle and keeps them in playoff contention, to see him sit out the season, given when he'll be available.
