Letter of Resignation
« on: August 30, 2011, 02:10:20 AM »
Given the tone and content of the reaction to my recent rule regarding the content of chat, it's become clear that the DL as a whole does not agree with my views on what is appropriate and inappropriate, and is not willing to change or doesn't care enough to make it an issue either way.

This is fine; you certainly have the right to hold a different view than I do.

By the same token, I have the right to hold my views. Since I find the current content of the chat unacceptable by those views, I choose to remove myself from it, and as I don't participate much with the site itself aside from hosting it, from the DL as a whole. Effective immediately, I will no longer be performing any type of administrative or programming work for the RPGDL.

In addition, the site as currently hosted will be shut down in two weeks. This is the same notice that would be expected by any employer; this should give the group time to find a replacement, who's welcome to contact me for site backups and domain transfer to new hosting - I'm not going to hold the site hostage, but neither am I going to continue running it out of simple inertia. If this two week period passes without a new web admin, the site will be taken down and backups made that will be provided when the new admin is ready to use them.

This is not something I intend to change my mind about; I've had ample time to consider this decision. While there will be people here that I'll miss, I have neither the time nor the energy to enforce a decision that it's clear the majority doesn't support.

I wish you the best.

It's unfortunate that it's come to this. Despite whatever differences we had over this latest issue, let me say that I still immensely respect the work you've put into the DL over the years and truly appreciate it. If I haven't said it lately or at all, thank you.

It's sad to see you go, but I respect that you're willing to stand up for what you believe in that much. Not sure what your plans are going forward, but I wish you the best of luck. Not sure if you're completely leaving or just taking some time away to let emotions calm down, but hopefully in time you'll come back to hang out. We'll be waiting for you, man. I'll always consider you a friend.

Thanks for all your hard work over the years.

Regarding the "issue",  I don't think your viewpoint was wrong.  However, when you consider how many years the DL operated without such a restriction, the rule came much too late.  The genie was already out of the bottle.  I hope whoever admins the next version of the DL considers implementing some conduct rules right out of the gate.  Many of the people frequenting this place are hitting 30 or even older.  There's a difference between "adult" humor and nonstop penis jokes.

Bleah, I've been kind of disenchanted with people on the internet in general lately.  I guess it's my age, but I'm just not relating well anymore.  This mess is kind of the icing on the cake.

I'll try and look you up next time I'm in Austin, Hal.

Yeah, it's something we've already been discussing in private (whether there might actually be a decent section of the population who would appreciate content rules on the chat, but didn't feel it was worth it to get into a big internet flame war about it, hence their voices weren't heard).  Even if the answer is "no" right now, It's something we'll probably want to revisit in three or four years (as the average age of DLers get older, and more people have serious desk jobs or kids or whatever).

Take care Hal. Thanks for caring all these years.

I'm sorry I never had the chance to meet you or the privilege to get to know you like others   :( Respected your side/choices/decisions here. Just wanted you to know that.

Hal, thank you for everything.  Despite our difference of opinion on the chat issue I hold you in high regard. I'm certain I speak for the whole DL when I say the door will always be open for you and I dearly hope to see you in the future.

You stuck it out for a lot longer than I thought you would. Hell, when this chat drama started to unfold I kind of figured "this might be the last straw."

You did quite a good job over the years, even when I got the feeling your heart wasn't really in it anymore. I hope moving on turns out well for you.

Sorry to see you go.  You were here longer than expected seeing as we kind of winged you into it spontaneously to save the site after the incident and well, you've done a rather good job while you were here.  Thanks for everything.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

Keep in touch.  Not sure what kind of communication we use that overlaps other than IRC.  Guess I poke into #gensokyo sometime.

Email maybe?

I can't say it any better than that. You're the man, Hat. Thanks for everything - both the fruits of your labor and the pleasure of your company, online and at the cons. You'll be missed.

Oh, wow, okay.

So.  First, I owe you an apology.  This whole disagreement could have been handled with more even tempers on both sides and for my part in escalating it as bad as it got, I apologize.  As I prefaced my diatribes earlier, despite this I do respect you and, like Sopko said, thanks for all you've done.

Actually, I'm going to leave it at that.  Anything further I could say will not be constructive at this point.  Sorry it had to come to this.

*salutes* Love ya man. Thanks for the years of work and the two DLCs and just being a generally awesome guy. I will clearly have to stalk you from time to time in other chats.

Yeah, let me second this.

I haven't really spent much time in #gensokyo, but now it's highly tempting due to potential for both Hal and Laggy. *fangirl squeal*

Also, Hal, you should do like I do, and completely disappear from the DL website for years at a time, but still show up at DLCons because I simply must still see you in person.

Alternatively, I will try to stalk you when I am back in Oklahoma. My schedule tends to be really crazy when I am home which is why I never have before!

Not sure what happened, but I imagine it can't be good. Hate to see you go guy I don't really know. You do a lot of good things behind the scenes that you I don't give you credit for and I salute you for all yer hard work.

Or something?

Peace~
