Hosting for the DL
« on: August 30, 2011, 03:04:03 AM »
In light of Hal's decision to part ways with the DL, I know people have been talking about where to go. In order to organize the thoughts that have been voiced on chat, in IM, and wherever else you people talk, super suggested I open a thread.

So!

BlueHost.com is the current host, and it's also the host of my personal site. (Plus I have an affiliate link.) Can get full service from around $4-$6/mo.

I've also heard good things about HostGator.com.

Thoughts?

As long as we get a service that can support us and has good speed/service, it's all good. That's as far as my two cents go; we shouldn't be afraid to shell out a bit to get good hosting. With most of the DL having jobs now, there's no reason to skimp.

I use Host Gator and can vouch for it personally.  Haven't had a single problem since setting it up.

As I said, BlueHost.com is our current host. I think it makes sense to ask this question first:

Are we unhappy with this host? Is there something we're lacking here that we should look for elsewhere?

I definitely have no complaints about our current hosting, if a simple transfer of ownership (or whatever the details are) can be accomplished.

I'm pretty good with the current hosting.

How much does the current hosting cost? If it's less than$20 per mo, I wouldn't even bat an eye to set up an auto-transfer of funds monthly to it myself. And if it's signifcantly more than $20, then I wouldn't mind if someone else knows how to transfer to a cheaper server. Only change I would make is reopening the tournament, if that's an issue with anyone.

Don't really have a problem with the current hosting and $4-6/mo. is affordable.

After the amount of pain we went through finding a downtime-free host before, I'm perfectly willing to stick it out with BlueHost in perpetuity.

There's also a DL bank account that several of us have put money into (currently in Hal's name) that is funding the hosting.  I know I've donated a decent amount to that account.  So...presumably our reserve funds will cover the hosting costs?

It sounds like staying with BlueHost.com makes the most sense.

Whomever is going to take charge of the domain will need to contact Hal to get rpgdl.com released, and get the site files. Do not ask him to release the domain until you're ready to buy the new hosting. There will be downtime from when Hal releases the domain to when the new account's IP is propagated. Shouldn't be more than an hour.

If you use my affiliate link, I'll get money (at some point - I think I need more than one sale to actually get a check) to put back into the DL monies account. Enough for like 10 months of hosting. <_< Affiliate link is this sentence.

By the way: I'm happy to help if you need help!

Ok, followed up with Hal about this.

Turns out the donations had basically run dry, and he was just paying out of pocket at this point.  He insists he doesn't want to be paid back (it sounds like it ended up being a fairly small amount) but I still feel kinda bad about that. :(

I didn't even know such an account existed, so that's not surprising. We'll have to put up a link somewhere so people can drop monies in when they feel the urge and make sure that sort of thing doesn't happen again.

Well, right, we had a decent amount of money donated back around DLC2, and Hal hadn't made a topic requesting more donations since then, which...apparently also means that Hal didn't receive any donations in the past four years or so.

Just an FYI: I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere (read: no internet, no cell) for the next six days, so any help from me is going to have to wait until September 7.

So, what's the status of getting hosting and getting the site moved over?  We only have a few days left in the two weeks Hal gave us and I haven't heard about anything being done.  Do we still need more funds?  Even if we do, where do we send them?

Best question, who's in charge of getting this done?  Someone needs to get on this and let us know what's going on and if any help is needed.

Tal's handling it. we were waiting on LD and Laggy both returning to handle the site transfer. Both are back tomorrow so we'll get started soon.

Planning on getting this set tonight or this weekend, so the site will probably go down for a bit.

Note: Downtime shouldn't be for more than an hour or two. Could be up to 48.
