one surprisingly annoying search later: Dungeons of Daggorath.
Never played it myself, despite having been the proud(?) owner of a Tandy 1000.
I approve of all games that you can and should map out with graph paper.

One of the first, if not the first, isometric dungeon games

2. Color? Well I guess you could say that...
Despite its name, the TRS80 Color Computer, could only produce a whopping 8 colors. The drawing abilities were pretty advanced for its time though!

3. I'm expanding my vocabulary!
The game had potions with names like Hale, Rime, and Thews. I totally had to dictionary.com that shit, except dictionary.com HADN'T BEEN INVENTED YET.

4. If my heart beats any faster, it's going to explode.
Instead of hit points, you just had a beating heart. It would beat faster from moving, attacking, and getting smacked by monsters.

5. There was a sequel to this game called Castle of Thaggorad.
That didn't stand up to the original game. Which by the way was programmed in only 8K. Take that modern programmers!

Anyway, check it out on Youtube. It's surprisingly deep for its time.

Hmm...*looks at some file sizes*

Yeah, my file sizes on some c++ files for programming tests are larger than that--these are tests given to people as part of an interview process. Lots of comments, though; who knows how small that actually compiles. (I included std, so of course it bloats to like 500k; for all I know my compiled code might actually be like...2k).

You can, however, find modern programmers who can work in reasonably small memory spaces. PS3 SPUs have a total of 256k of memory, and that's memory for both the code, and the data it's processing on. Graphics programmers get to write shaders that run in one of, often 48 parallel processes, and are usually restricted to a pretty low number of instructions (30 or so).
