Howdy all you international people who are arriving early. Something's come up that I have to address. My friend Peter's wedding is apparantly dropping on May 26th. If it were literally anyone else's wedding, sans maybe Andrew's, I'd just flat out skip it. Such is not the case here. Luckily, we're still very far in advance that we can plan for stuff like this. Sorry to put everyone out

Can I take stock of when the international people/those coming super early were hoping to arrive?

I'm planning to come like on June 3rd, and any day earlier is a flat out impossibility, since I already scheduled my June vacation time. Unless you spend a week at his wedding, I doubt that'll be a problem.

edit: Do you know if there is any Marriotts close by? Not exactly sure if I can do this, but my gf works at one and I could maybe possibly get a nice chunk of the room taken out with her help.

Not really, though I'll do an expanded search for one. The closest hotels are on the first page post.

EDIT: There are in fact two by the highway. A Residence Inn and a Springhill Suites. Roughly 10-15 minute drive away.

So there's a not-insignificant chance that Andrew and I will end up spending 10 days in England, then flying directly to Florida for DLCon, and then flying back home to Oakland. Given that, we're going to want to find REALLY cheap housing. I'm up for sharing a vacation home near Soppy's place if anyone else wants to join in on that action. Tentative dates would be 6/5-6/12 (full week, though Andy and I would probably leave Sunday or Monday).

FWIW, the research I've done says we could probably expect to spend $70-100 per person for 8 people to share a 4 bedroom house for 1 week.

Anyone up for that?

Lodging thing I thought I'd bring up; this is a good thing mind, so don't get worried!

My mother offered that if anyone wants to say late/early, she'd let me use one of their timeshares down there, and hold a few people there. I wouldn't say this is an insured thing and assume its being done, and it'll only be done for me + 3-4 other people (they can only hold so many people), but thought I'd toss the idea out now when there's still a good deal of time before the Con.

Don't start calling spots in it yet, but thought I'd mention it so Soppy could make note of it or something, as an added factor that could help.

Alright, now that the rotational schedules are out for 2012-2013, I know I can make it. Not coming for Universal. Not planning on renting a car unless we need it desperately (looks like we won't). Up for a vacation house, but am fine with a hotel as well.

Not going to buy tickets until late March/early April, so I'll let you know when!

...and man. I'm going to St. John at the end of May, coming back for 3 days, then going to Florida. I'll need to go to Alaska to make up for this.

Best way to get an idea is to read the past con topics, both the planning and post-con ones.

Also, meant to bump this anyway to remind people to start getting affairs in order, as this one is a almost a month earlier than the previous one.

edit: So, here's some more questions. Seeing as I am a relative newcomer (to the Con scene at least), is it going to be hard..or strange for me to get a room with people or should I look to book my own room?

Do I need to bring anything? I do live an hour away from O-town, so if need be we could use my car to shuttle people. I'd love to help in any way possible and I can even get in town as early as Wed night if you need.

If you're willing to ferry people around, that'll be a big help. It's really up to you if you want to join in someone else's room or get your own (keep in mind it's best for all to invite others into your room to split costs). Though the latter would probably help everyone involved if you can get a discount at Marriotts.

Also, if you're going to Universal I'd recommend coming up sometime Tuesday if possible. We're leaving early in the morning to get there when Islands of Adventure opens and all possible cars would be appeciated. I plan on housing the Universal peeps for those days, so just plan on the hotel being the con dates (Wed/Thurs-whenever you're leaving).

Mmm, so because UPS is fucking horrible, and a taxi roundtrip cost $$$ to pick up packages at a warehouse, I joined Zipcar. University students at BU get an annual membership for 15 dollars / year, and I have full insurance ($90 a year). So. Should we need a car, an extra car, whatever, I can rent a zipcar anytime they're available. For a day, it's about 70 bucks, which isn't bad since they provide a credit card for all gas. Just sayin'. I also drive vewwy vewwy safely.
