Just wanted to chime in and declare that I am hurt, nay, wounded that you all could even CONSIDER sharing our PRECIOUS and highly LIMITED webspace with these people. I mean, what do you think we are? Kind hearted human beings who happen to like RPGs and thus would want to integrate with groups like this to expand our horizons and communities?

LD can you leash him and put him back in his crate already
<Eph> When Laggy was there to fuel my desire to open crates, my life was happy.  Now I'm stuck playing a shitty moba and playing Anime RPGs.

We're getting a bit too heavy on the in-jokes given that this thread is probably being read by several people who don't know us :P

(For the uninitiated: Andrew and LD are dating in the real world.  Also: I can totally picture LD putting Andrew on a leash.  Like...that sounds surprisingly plausible).

i think it's worth noting that i believe this is running on a slightly older build of SMF so things should actually be less complicated than they actually are, so...

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=459477.msg3211118#msg3211118

SMF forums is back up.  Here's the topic I made, and the Custom Forms Mod I was talking about is in the following link.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1279

I don't really want to use it anymore, but I'll browse the latest stable version of SMF and see if it has the functionality I want, and then see if there are any really useful mods for it as well.

EDIT

The following are mods I'm bookmarking for later pondering.  I doubt I will use any of them, since the basic version probably has everything I need.

Vimes, how many members are currently active (i.e. what's the member count going to be like initially on launch?)

I don't know.  A dozen, two dozen.  Not a lot more until we have a flagship mod and some editing tools.  I expect ten or twenty more every month, once we have a viable clone.

The only forum modification that's important is "are you human".  The DL is a sufficiently well-mapped domain that we get a lot of spambots trying to register.

I expect ten or twenty more every month, once we have a viable clone.

You would be more populous than the DL within about 6 months if you could maintain a growth rate like that :)

I really like that mod too.  Even though, I figure we'll go in mod-free, and add them as needed.  I'll just tweak the proposed usergroups a bit once I get my feet wet as admin.

And a clone is not a trivial creation.  Even a short, two scenario clone, with simplified stats and battles.

No real input other than if you are up for putting in the time the more affiliate content is a fine thing.  Now the important thing that is jokes.

Also Andy in a collar is so plausible because you have met him in real life and seen the tan lines it leaves.

That is a little bit akin to saying a petunia is less capable of harming you than a really friendly but mentally deficient puppy.

Cut it out, Zenny.

Anyways, sounds pretty neat to me. It seems like a logical evolution of the general game-info-and-rom-hacking we have these days.

I mean, conceivably one could imagine that there *could* be problems with dozens of people that many of us don't know on the same webspace, if you put it like that. Then you remember we've had the same thing with Mafia community influxes and you lighten up(Also, all the scenarios where I can imagine actual problems coming up are very outlandish, to boot~). So yeah. Strikes me as a fine idea.

Knock it off with off topic stuff here in general please.

And yeah, the are you human one is the only important one. It's not gamefaqs; if there is someone who is dumb enough to troll, it's easy to have an admin deal with the problem.  Is Zak done mapping out everything from the mechanics end, or is that a work in progress?

We generally don't bother Zaraktheus, because he is our only assembly programmer and reverse-engineer.  He has a lot on his plate already.

I don't think there are any realistic concerns on our end.  They're not planning on linking ROMs or pornography, so our host won't kick us out for content reasons.  They're not planning on hosting 1080p live streaming video on the DL proper, so we're not likely to hit any bandwidth restrictions.

My only real concern is actually "What if their forum goes completely dead, and everyone leaves and stops posting?"  Knowing us, We'd keep it as an archive, of course, but every once in a while we need to upgrade software for security purposes, or a spambot would get through the filter, so we'd need to do maintenance, which is a bit of extra work for Tal.  Still a fairly minor concern, all things considered.

No, I'd say most of the question marks are on their end, not ours; are they willing to trust us with backend admin controls?  Do SMF controls give them enough control, or would they want more extensive admin abilities?

One thing: Everyone with admin access must have a sufficiently long and scrambled password.  At least 16 digits long, with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.

I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves with a lot of hypothetical situations and concerns that frankly won't likely be relevant (at least for a very long time).

Right now I'd like to keep the focus on the immediate issue: are we moving forward with this? If so, I'll see about setting up an SMF forumboard on the latest stable version with no bells and whistles. That'll honestly be enough work and configuration to keep people busy and to get work posted/organized for quite some time. We can move from there.

Yes, we're moving forward with this.  I  want to be completely prepared and have volunteers, so I just want you to wait until Tuesday.

This topic serves another purpose - it is a reference I'm making for the future, a message to future users of the forum, should they encounter any problems.

Once we have tools to edit in-game media, we can add another section and set of boards.  Here they are:
Quote
-Section: "Media" Description: "Modified and custom media belong in their named board."
*Board: "Sprites" Description: "(enter a description here)"
*Board: "Ability Effects" Description: "(enter a description here)"
*Board: "Backgrounds" Description: "(enter a description here)"
*Board: "Sound Effects" Description: "(enter a description here)"
*Board: "Music" Description: "(enter a description here)"

Absolutely. I'm not in any rush for this, but I want to make sure the direction and focus are clear.

Vimes, I don't expect people to go through and register on the DL forums just to post their intended participation here, but could you at least get a list of people who will say "they will use this board" in writing, whether on GFAQs or otherwise? I do kind of want to make sure that this thing will get used by a fair headcount before committing to it.

Just put the word out at gamefaqs, ffhacktics, and byuu.org.  I didn't put anything at RHDN because nobody replied to my original topic.  If I can't drum up enough interest, I'll make a board using one of the free message board sites.

Why would you do that? Members of this community are very interested in this project and would be willing to help out as they can. Saga fan hacks sound like amazing fun.
