OST vs OST: Round 1, Week 2

Final Fantasy VII (Nobuo Uematsu)

Aeris' Theme- ... and that's all that needs to be said about that.

Still More Fighting/Those Who Fight Further- Quite possibly the perfect boss music.  Shit just got real, and it's time to rock!

Y's Seven - Falcom JDK

Quote
What I have always find interesting in JDK is how they can cling to that traditional cookie cutter feel, mix it with animeson elements, but the same time can still do a good job orchestrally. It felt like SRW, but a different approach, with SRW being animeson oriented due to its nature.
ED6's Silver Will would be a good example to it, I think it is also the reason why both the fans and composers going back to that track. And personally, Y's Seven felt like the most advance version of JDK's composition concept.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (Yoko Shimomura)
Another Side -Battle-- Another Side is basically the distillation of all things KH battle themes, this version cuts the build up and gets straight to the mansex.

Musique pour la tristesse de Xion- Yeah I like sad themes.

Fight it Out!: I felt in love with this song the first time I heard it. Completely epic and complex that captures the rise and fall of fights in that game really really well.
Blasphemous Experiment: This track really benefited from the remake version. The chanting at the start and the larger variety of instruments really fits a battle theme for a fight against a necromancer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp9sXVIYNjc Blasphemous experiment
----

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Really? I mean, really? Come on! Everyone loves this OST.
*Doom Castle - It wouldn't be a FFMQ nom without Doom Castle, probably one of the most memorable songs from the OST in general, if not one of the most memorable songs ever. The hard-rocking intro along with the music changing to an almost "let's climb this thing" overture really gets home what a badass place this is.
*City of Forests - As much as I want to nominate the final boss theme, I think City of Forests is a good contrast to the hard rocking style of Doom Castle. The song fills you with a sense of serenity and peacefulness that you simply won't find anywhere else in the game, especially the dungeons, which have their own very distinct musics.

So Warm and Soft - One of the most beautiful town themes I've ever heard.  Too bad no one pays attention to it over all the battle theme hype.
A Professional Villain Clad in Sand - The battle theme against the Tormenta Triad.  Out of all of the boss themes, this one sticks out to me the most due to its unique style.
(Surprised no one posted this one yet.  The choices here were pretty easy, but there are still a lot of good choices on this OST.)

Final Fantasy X (Nobuo Uematsu, others)

Quote
Servants of the Mountain- Just a great melancholy track.  Perfectly fits the people it represents.

Ending Theme- Okay, not the best use of variety, especially for Uematsu, but sue me.  Anyway, this song is so perfect for its scene, triumphant and tragic, sad and heroic, it is the end of the journey.  Hearing this I can perfectly picture the scene for which it plays, and truthfully only one other song has the same ability to drag me back to a particular place...

Final Fantasy 8
Quote
There's a ton of great stuff in this soundtrack.  I even like Eyes on Me, I'll admit it.  (Shame that one of the few meh pieces, Blue Fields, has such a prominent role, but whatever.)

The Legendary Beast - This one is just cool.
Premonition - A combination of the sorceress theme & the military theme. That is also fantastic.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7- Abstain. FF7's one of the all time great OSTs in both execution and music quality (Cid's theme, Fighting, Aeris's theme, One Winged Angel) but it's up against a really goddamn good OST here.  EDIT: Tossing the underdog a vote.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)- I have a weakness for OB/TO music.
Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest- XF had some really solid tracks. FFMQ was decent but it was never a favorite for music.
Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8- FFX has the superior OST if I'm listening to it out of game, but my god. I *HATE* the normal battle theme. FF8's OST was one of it's only redeeming points.  Both of these OSTs stomp the hell out of XF/MQ so yeah, may the winner cruise after this.

Notable TOPSP tracks:

Good choice, dude.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7 - Higher quality.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP) - How can anyone even hope to compare to Impregnable Defense?
Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - I doubt MQ will win this but that's all right, XF's music is pretty rad too.
Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8 - More memorable to me.

Did they add all the OB map themes to the TO remake, or were they in the PSX version as well? I honestly can't remember.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7: Mellow vs Upbeat. FF7's soundtrack is a lot more varied with probably more memorable themes (I haven't played Ys 7 but Ys games are similar), but its instruments and sound quality really hurt. Tifa's theme makes my ears bleed, and One Winged Angel sounds kind of pathetic now, for example. Sorry OWA fans.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP): I really dislike everything Kingdom Hearts related. BTW as a title "Musique pour la tristesse de Xion" sounds almost as bad as "358/2 days". Trying to stay objective and forgetting I am watching a flying Mickey with a giant key, there are some really good themes here. Fuck. Will vote later.

Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest: Will vote later here too, need to listen to a ton of music because I haven't played XF / don't remember FFMQ.

Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8: Honestly both of them have grating normal battle themes IMO. Somehow FF often screws that up. FF8's tracks never really stood out for me, even though I played the game right after it was released. Edit: Actually I'm a sucker for the FF8 intro (Liberi Fatali) and am a bit disappointed by a few FFX songs, looking back. (Like the Seymour Battle theme) Abstaining YET AGAIN for now.

Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest: Haha, when I was in high school two of my friends used to debate about whether FFMQ's music was shit or the shit. When I finally listened to some tracks years later I ended up with a pretty neutral opinion. On the other hand, XF ranks far above neutral to me, with some great boss tracks (Intrude Upon Happiness, Twilight of the Anti-Hero, Mechanical Dancing Fight), some great town music, and in general I just dig the musical style of the Wild Arms games.
Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8: I don't really dig FF8's musical style much, even its hyped tracks (mostly Liberi Fatali) fall flat to me. I like Man with the Machine Gun a lot but that's about it. FFX can answer Machine Gun with Otherworld, and is more generally solid otherwise, I think... stuff like Auron's Theme is really good, Someday the Dream Will End and A Truth Revealed are terrific event tracks, and the main dungeon themes, Sprouting and Calm Before the Storm, are also effective mood-setters.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7: ARGH THIS IS HARD ON ME. While FF7 definitely wins for nostalgia and beauty in Aerith's theme, and I really like Let The Battles Begin, Ys 7's soundtrack blew me away when I played it pretty much from start to finish. I'll also point out Person Who Brings End should be up here.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP): Tactics Ogre's music was the best thing about the game? Okay that wasn't intended as a compliment but it is still true. KH 358/2 had some good tracks but nothing tooooo standout.
Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest: Stick a knife in me why don't you.
Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8: Both regular battle themes ticked me off! But FFX's general quality is superior.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7 Not really feeling Ys 7's tracks.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP) KH music is usually solid, but damn TO is so good. Here's two more that I like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s9Rps9Bxr0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEQXiZrnwD4
Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest: Not that close.
Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8 Good match. I love Premonition.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7 - FF7 is good, but honestly I find it to be one of the more forgettable FF OSTs apart from OWA. I -still- have trouble remembering how the regular battle theme goes.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP) - KH music is really more my style, though this one was pretty close.
Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - MQ is actually more to my tastes, but objectively XF is the better OST here. Just more complexity and better use of music.
Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8 - Whereas I prefer FFX in nearly every other way, FF8 ends up being my favorite FF OST. The amount of love I have for "Man with the Machine Gun" could probably trump every other OST this week to me. (Luckily NIER and "Silver Will" aren't here this week.)

*goes off to listen to Silver Will*

Loop something new, Djinn. Like say... Inevitable Struggle?

Y's 7 - It could be different if FF7 had better sound quality.
KH 358/2 - It has Vector to the Heavens, thus winning by default.
WA XF - This is not even close.
FF8 - Both OST's quality is about equal to me, had to count which OST have more tracks to come to the decision

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7 - You can't go wrong with Ys music. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Vacant Interference yet. That track is awesome.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP) - Man, both of these are great. They both deserve to win.
Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - XF is good stuff. Mystic Quest does have a couple nostalgic favorites, but alas, it's just outclassed here.
Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8 - There are exactly three things that I like about Final Fantasy VIII:
1.) You can rename Rinoa "WHORE" or "BIMBO" or "WAFFLE" or whatever.
2.) It ends at some point.
3.) The soundtrack is fantastic.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7
This is tough.  Abstain, I think, I'm not sure how well Ys 7 holds up in game.  Ys 7 wins by out-of-game listening, of course, and FF7 has some erratic sound quality, and some meh tracks.  But FF7 also has some all-time classic tracks.  Not so much Aeris's Theme, but just plain the main theme of the game (the overworld) is very well done.  OWA and the boss theme get obvious nods as well.  The soundtrack holds up pretty decently.  The one callout I'll make is for a type of theme that's easy to phone in, but FF7 does a great job on - unsettling background music for plot dumps.  Yeah, Anxious Heart ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMvHTlWyxH0 ).  Only realized how well the piece works on replays.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)
Dunno.  KH music is pretty consistently great, while random TO samples other than "Blasphemous Experiment" fell off a bit in quality.  TO still seemed pretty well done at least.

Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
FFMQ battle themes?  Awesome, all of 'em.  Better than anything in the XF soundtrack.  (Boss theme hype: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2vEakoOIdU ).  The rest of the MQ soundtrack?  Eh whatever bland.  Okay some of the dungeon themes like Doom Castle are okay, but the town and anything else stuff is super-forgettable.  Meanwhile, XF...  it's not a soundtrack I would particularly hype listening to out of the game, but it's pretty solid in-game.  Nice call out on the town music, that actually is one of the better pieces in the game IMHO.  (Flip side Tormenta Triad is a yawner to me.)

Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8
"To Zanarkand" is probably my favorite piece between these two soundtracks?  And FFX certainly has some great pieces.  But it also has some misses, and some whatevers (Yevon's battle theme for example).  FF8 is pretty much straight awesome through the entire soundtrack.

Not...as interested in this group as the last.  Some average OSTs overall.

Final Fantasy 7 vs Ys 7 - I actually prefer Ys6 to Ys7 in terms of music.  Final Fantasy 7 I feel really fits, and the sheer variety of tracks is nice.  Ys7 works great too, but...eh, I feel FF7 fits better?  Best match here, but not particularly interested in this match.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days vs Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP) - - Eh.

Wild ARMs XF vs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Bleh.

Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy 8 - Yeah...mmm...I like FF8's soundtrack more than FF7, but FFX had a good soundtrack.  Overall stronger.  Just so much apathy for this group of games.
