OST vs OST: Round 1, Week 5

Parasite Eve
-Aya's theme-reprise. Like all of PE's music, it is insanelty stylish and sets the music. It fits the game- it's a downbeat piano track that helps convey a world under siege by a biological horror. Final Battle theme. It has a gothic feel to me (Which fits with PE) and welp, it's a final boss track. It is intense, like all of PE's music.[/b]

Iji

Kinda Green - A melancholy and moody track that plays when Iji realizes that the human race is doomed and she's very likely the last one left. Very atmospheric. The fleeting guitar perks it up for just a few seconds before fading back into the melancholy portion.
Further - Further is a rare piece of music: a song that is genuinely sad. Listen to the lyrics. Iji is kind of a depressing game, so having this sad, hopeless song play during the end credits seems fitting.

Actraiser
- I can't be sure what Yuzu Koshiro did before making the Actraiser soundtrack but I think this may be one of my personal favorite SNES OST's ever.
*Stage 1 - Filmore - The very second you set foot on the ground as God, you realize just what a screwed up world you're in. Trees come to life and attack you, there are dangerous bee monsters everywhere and then you're attacked by a Centaur boss! The game doesn't fool around with its stage themes and Filmore, even though it's the first one, gets you right into the action.
*Birth of the People - Meanwhile, your first foray into the town-building segment is met with a very melodious and peaceful tune to remind you of how tender and delicate you need to be as the lord of your people. It evokes a sense of serenity and peacefulness, compared to the hard-hitting stage themes.

Legend of Mana Yoko Shimomura

The Running Memory - The track is mainly used for Nordic Snowfield, and this track certainly does its job to sounds icey. The main melody delivers a melancholic but not yet sorrowful feel, which presented Nordic Snowfield's essence as a land of tragedy. Glaciera lost her best friend here, and Mehpianse lost his brother. But both had accepted what had occurred as they revisited their memory as they run by the snowfield, thus the melancholic yet not sorrowful tune is very fitting composition. The sub melody also delivered a crystallized air, as if pointing out the shattered Jumi core that was buried under the snow, and the flower that had born from it. Shimomura always had the strong point of matching her music with the content of the game, and I must say this is one of the best example.

Missing Truth - This is another piece where Shimomura done well in matching her composition with the game content. And I would say this track not only have an impact audibly, but perhaps visually as well. I... uh... this is where I find my own terminology lacking and couldn't think of a way to delivery my impression on this track. I think the best way I can put it here is it made the light looked beautiful.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter- A moment of Joy- Regent boss theme. No nonsense battle track that has military overtones. I thought it fit the battle nicely, since you are  effectively killing the military and political leaders of shelter to get out of dodge. Abandoned Waste Pit- BoF5's OST was better than the game's actual writing at telling a story. This track makes you feel like you are hundreds of meters below the surface, trying to scratch your way out a pit.

This is certainly some kind of luck.

Nier vs Parasite Eve: Really tough luck for Parasite Eve here.
Iji vs Wild ARMs 2: Fairly brutal one here, Blazer is as solid as always, but I do so adore Further.  Will come back.  Hopefully.
Actraiser vs. Higurashi
LoM vs BoF5

e: finally convinced to actually change a vote... or cast a vote in this case.  Gogo Iji.

Nier vs Parasite Eve Yeah, rough draw for PE, which is a shame. I really love PE's opening song.
Iji vs Wild ARMs 2 Personally I think WA2 has the weakest music of the WA series, but Iji's style just isn't for me.
Actraiser vs. Higurashi Actraiser's music is pretty average.
LoM vs BoF5 Urgh, this is tough. LoM has more variety, but BoF5's music does do a great job of telling a story, very similar to Super Metroid in that respect. Going to go with the underdog for this one, but it's really close.

NieR vs Parasite Eve
First time hearing NieR music. Now I see what all the fuss is about.

Iji vs Wild ARMs 2
Though Iji has the smaller soundtrack here, it has a lot more stand-out tracks (see below). I just love the heavy metal style.

Actraiser vs. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
I'll side with nostalgia this time, but I did like some of the Higurashi tracks I listened to.

Legend of Mana vs Breath of Fire 5
Admirable effort by Breath of Fire 5, but it's going up against some of the best music on the PS1.

-----------

Additional Iji tracks to consider:
Tor - Final boss music. You've probably heard this before.
Face to Face - Regular boss battle. I actually like it better than Tor's theme. It's loud, it's intense, and it's in-your-face. Perfect for a boss fight.
Seven Four - Adventurous level theme. It's fast-paced and catchy.
Three Cans Later - Mmmm, electric guitar.
Men and You - Title screen music. Neat little track.

Question, is that all the Iji Ost has?
The OST in whole is somewhat hit and miss for me, but what delivered, really delivered. Especially the Kinda Green, it really is a O.o to me.
If OST could just have a few mroe track like that....

On the other hand, I'll toss in some recommandaion for Nier.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGNa6g7mpNM&feature=related: Dungeon music
Iji vs Wild ARMs 2: Oh man, I never even noticed Iji's soundtrack in game, aside from the last boss music. Still not a big WA2 fan aside from that one town music.
Actraiser vs. Higurashi: I cannot stand Actraiser's field map music anymore.
LoM vs BoF5: BOF5 is the weakest soundtrack from the FFT guy IMO. LOM has awesome music.

The entire melody is ENGRAVED upon my soul.

And it is entirely inappropriate for that time when you need to punish villagers with thunder for still keeping the same old houses instead of building new ones.

NieR vs Parasite Eve
Ahahahaha no.  PE's got a decent soundtrack with some strong tracks, but it isn't even one of Shimomura's best.  (Legend of Mana or Radiant Historia or even Kingdom Hearts II thrash it soundly.)

Iji vs Wild ARMs 2
Good taste on the two WA2 picks; Final Ignition definitely stood out too.  The two opening themes are also excellent ( though dang, I can't find the American version of the 2nd opening ).  By all rights WA2 should win even with a undistinguished rest of the soundtrack, as these 4 pieces certainly outweigh Iji's best, and it's a larger soundtrack.  Unfortunately, the rest of WA2's soundtrack is actively blah, and features lots of short loops.  Try clicking on a few random other links; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmrS5xPJxyQ&feature=related  say does not really acquit itself well at all.

Actraiser vs. Higurashi
No nostalgia for Actraiser.  Those two picks were okay but nothing special.  Higurashi...  the piano piece was eh, I've heard that before.  You -Destructive- was pretty good, though I'm curious what the context is - the piece sounds like it's music for "I just learned I have magical powers of flying" but the track title indicates the opposite.

Legend of Mana vs BoF5
Another slaughter.

Overall ranking:
NieR ~ Legend of Mana
Parasite Eve ~ Iji
Wild Arms 2 ~ Breath of Fire V? ~ Higurashi?
Actraiser?

Nah, there's more. I just linked the ones I like best. The Iji soundtrack has a total of 21 tracks.

If you're interested, you can find the game's OST here. Just click the link that says "Download high-quality soundtrack." That should be easier than puttering around YouTube.

Listened to the whole thing, and it really is a hit and miss to me. The more moody tracks are those that really impressed me. The more metallic one felt kind ehhhh, with the exception of Tor.

Nier vs Parasite Eve: Fuck you, Hatbot.
Iji vs Wild ARMs 2: I really didn't see much to shout about in WA2's OST beyond Battle With Lord Blazer. And Further is just about the most emotionally affecting piece of music I've heard in a game.
Actraiser vs. Higurashi: Actraiser, hell yeah! One of the first times I really noticed videogame music as being an awesome thing.
LoM vs BoF5: BoF5 is a favorite, though I can't really complain either way here.

Nier vs Parasite Eve: Nier music is varied and kicks ass. Heavy on vocals but the vocals are GOOD so whatever.
Iji vs Wild ARMs 2: WA2 music is memorable and hum-worthy. Iji didn't leave much of an impression on me.
Actraiser vs. Higurashi
LoM vs BoF5: BoF5 has some good tracks, but Legend of Mana is renowned for the music. Also that opening is... yeah.

Nier vs Parasite Eve - Uh...yeah.  Parasite Eve's got a good soundtrack, but I feel Nier's fits a lot better.  I've never been thoroughly impressed with PE's soundtrack - I feel it is somewhat poorly utilized in-game - but it's good.  Nier's is just better, and a heavy vocal soundtrack works pretty well for the game.

Iji vs Wild ARMs 2 - So...uh...I like a lot of the WA2 songs.  I think Battle with Lord Blazer is a bit overrated, but still good.  Just...I remember all of 2 of them.  I think the repetitiveness of the music might be the problem.  Still, though...it's good, and fitting.  But it sticks with you like Chinese food - just in and out fast.  And while a lot of the songs are good, some of them are...not great.  Honestly, I am not a fan of most of the battle themes, and many of them get underutilized.  I think this overall reduces the cohesiveness of WA2's OST - you spend so much time in combat (bosses or otherwise), but the music is so underwhelming.  Iji...seems to fit a bit better based on my research.  The music sticks with you better, and generally feels more cohesive.  And now, having started to play it a bit...yeah, it dominates here.  Perfectly fitting, excellent style, etc.

Actraiser vs. Higurashi - You are a god.  Kick some ass.  It fits.

LoM vs BoF5 - Good fight here.  I honestly think BoF:DQ wins this handily.  The overall feel of the soundtrack is much stronger - it really makes the world come alive.  LoM...does the same, but nowhere to nearly the same degree.  I like some songs in LoM a lot (the ending vocal, some of the unique battle themes), but those are all I really remember about the world.  BoF5 continuously gives off the air of a dark, awful world, and the journey to a brighter future.  Cohesiveness and overall fit is stronger with BoF5.

Nier vs Parasite Eve
Iji vs Wild ARMs 2 - I could swing either way on this, honestly. But WA2 does have one of the least impressive WA soundtracks, and Iji's really worked amazingly in game.
Actraiser vs. Higurashi
LoM vs BoF5 - I go on about voting based on in-game use, then vote against the one game everyone else seems to agree does it well. BoF5 music just...fails to make an impression on me ever. It's wonderful background music. So good at it then when I try to actually pay attention to the music instead of letting it just be in the background, I lose interest damn near immediately. LoM on the otherhand, I love nearly in it's entirety. Lots of very strong songs, good with both background and active music, a champion potential entry easily. Soooo this is not even remotely close for me.

Need to listen to Nier and Higurashi before I can vote on those matches.
