Bookkeeping! Or how CK makes a bunch of pointless work for himself

Something I've been kicking around for a while, and have ultimately decided to go ahead with, is assembling some data for my own records.  I've always liked mixing up games that are well played and understood with obscurer things to make them easier to deal with, so the criteria 'Ranked' shows up in things I do a lot.

But obviously, 'ranked' is a relatively outdated concept now.  With the DL gone, and rankings static, there's no correcting system in place to improve the definition of what's well played over time.  And so, for my own purposes if nothing else, I've elected to compile some new data.

Here's how this will work.  There will be a large, large list here.  It will have every game ranked at the end of the DL's life on it.  What I'd like to know is if you played it, and if you would keep it 'ranked'.  In addition, I'm going to try and assemble a list of relevant games that were never ranked, for which I need the same data.  Obviously, I may miss things there (I am afterall using my own play list to build that list) so write-ins are welcome, but please draw attention to them so I can make a new post (or edit them in, depending on response I get here).

I'm assuming that keeping things as ranked can be split up between characters in games?

For purposes of board tourneys I've always considered a game all or nothing in the 'ranked' department.  Otherwise I'm not entirely sure how you mean that.

Djinn: Ohh, FFIV-2.  Yes, Indeed.  LO is still picking up from the long years of neglect due to 360ness, but I could see it recovering in due time.  The rest are games I considered but rejected as ones that have some fans but never really enough.

Are people thinking of unranked games as ones they'll never ever see again?  Please don't.  Instead, think of them as games you're as likely to see as Final Fantasy Tactics as a 'good draw'.

Anyway, I'll be Editing Final Fantasy IV: The After Years into the giant list.  If folks could edit that into their lists, that'd be aces.

Kingdom Hearts - hrrrnnngh. Again, not really sold on this. From what I've seen, it's basically +1 Godlike, everyone else is crap because Sora exists.

Final Fantasy II - Just no. Since everything relies on PC stats, there's literally nothing that can be ranked here without huge interp issues.
Final Fantasy XII - Leaning no for the above reason, but it's a little less awkward than FF2 so I could be swayed here. I'd have to look into it, which I'm not up for doing now. :|

Hoping to put together a tourney soon, so putting up some results!!

So, some notes on the counting process I used.

- Each game was judged in two dimensions, Played/Not Played and Rank/Don't Rank.
- Prevailing opinion was in favor of ranking things whenever reasonable.  As such, unless explicitly noted otherwise, all votes of Played were also counted as votes to Rank, while votes of Not Played were considered as abstains in the rank/don't rank criteria.
- I decided games had to have above 50% in both catagories to be considered as ranked.  Currently, there are 10 votes, so this means each game must have 6 players to remain ranked, and less than 5 votes of Don't Rank.
- Additionally, each game must have 5 votes to be Ranked.  This matters more in the not currently ranked games, where there was much abstaining among players.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift - PCs are a huge no for me with how FFTA2 skills work.  It's easy to imagine Orlandu sitting in his base class the rest of the game and knowing his skillset.  It's basically impossible for Luso to sit in Soldier forever without leaving ability points on the floor, and there's no particular reason to identify him with that, etc.
Final Fantasy XII Uh rankable for me but not really CK-rules rankable, since there's only uh Larsa and *maybe* Cid who are reasonable ranks, make of that what you will.

Pokémon Black/White - played.  It's a Pokemon game; on the other hand, it has significant power creep compared to the first four generations and would, if included with the rest of them, would throw off averages for the older Pokemon.  I would lean towards ranking it in a vacuum, i.e., calculating averages based on Unova Pokemon only, and conversely calculating averages of gen 1-4 pokemon without including the Unova Pokemon.  But if that's too much trouble just leave it out.
Final Fantasy II - played.  Stat system is poorly documented, and in general it's hard to call what appropriate stats for the PCs would be, but if those hurdles can be jumped I'd like to see it ranked.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - unplayed.
Final Fantasy XII - played.  My gut instinct is that if you rank this at all, the only sane way to rank it is based off the Zodiac Job System version, but I'm not sure how you'd pick which of the 12 available jobs is most suited to each PC.
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - partially played, not sure what to say about it.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years - played.  I'd actually lean toward including this over the original FF4, but working out all the bosses would be a heck of a lot of effort.  Definitely in favor of seeing it ranked, but by definition it would probably make FF4 Classic unranked.

Kingdom Hearts - Don't rank. While I like a fair bunch of the duellers (Donald! Sora! Ariel! Peter Pan! Jack Motherfucking Skellington.), the game is as duelling-unfriendly as they come.
Radiant Historia - This was ranked already, wasn't it?
Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation - Don't rank. Such a duelling trainwreck in a really broken way, and I'm not sure the playership justifies it.
Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum - Rank. Apathetic about 4th generation, but I don't feel any ill will towards Pokémon in general.
The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow-Brick Road - Abstain. I -like- the cast as a general duelling thing, but low playership and eeeeeeew Oz.
Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy - Rank. Sorta wanted to abstain on it because of the pathsplit (I don't like how non-Raze path stuff suffers in the voting department), but I really like this duelling cast.
Cthulhu Saves the World - Ranked.
Parasite Eve - Don't rank. Woohoo Aya.
Dragon Quest V - Rank. sure why not
Star Ocean: First Departure - Abstain. Completely apathetic about this.
Xenosaga: Also Sprach Zarathustra - Don't rank. So much ill will against this, even though I like a few of the duellers (XS3 MOMO is one of the coolest things ever in terms of how broken she is when she gets a turn, even if she sucks in Heavy because of Rule of Tim to the max)

My kneejerk is that it's too new right now and that if you put it up for a vote -now-, it'll get a lot of negative feedback and never have a chance. Flipside: it's better-played already than Dis2/3 and has more interesting skillsets than either.

Probably right on both counts.  I mostly thought of it because the majority of Disgaea 1-3 PCs have a Disgaea 4 form (as DLC or otherwise), and most likely the overwhelming majority of the PCs from 1/2 in particular would be more interesting as their Dis4 forms due to the presence of Evilities. 

It's more or less the same view I have on handling FF4, now that After Years exists; ranking After Years would more or less obsolete classic FF4 for ranking IMO, as a number of classic FF4 characters (Kain, Edge, and possibly Edward come immediately to mind) are substantially improved in their After Years forms, and very few if any got worse (weapon competition might hurt Cecil a little bit).
