RPGDL 2012 Season 1: Noms!

Yup, 'tis time for noms!  This will be a standard sized, 4 division, 16 duellers per division tournament using ranked games.  Basic rules:

- Please nom exactly 4 characters per division, Godlike, Heavy, Middle, and Light
- Use this post http://www.rpgdl.com/forums/index.php/topic,5966.msg142000.html#msg142000 to determine what games are ranked.
- Feel free to use any characters (or character classes, or bosses) from these games as you see fit.
- Use your best judgement on character divisions.  Standard DL rules apply, so no twinks or the like please.  Try to keep a watch on the thread in case there's any debate on division placement.
- This format should produce more noms than there are slots, so multiple nominations for the same character will increase their chances of getting in.  The most nommed characters will get automatic slots, with dice rolling among the remainder.

I'm aiming to launch the tourney on Sunday, so get nommin' and have fun!

Well being forced to vote on a certain form of a character arguably counts more as a twink than anything else. Not that I really mind unless there are two separate TimeLords (or anyone else like that, e.g. Kanon) in the tournament.

...I'm surprisingly okay with losing Disgaea 2, the other Tales games, and Ogre Battle... I think we needed this kind of list overhaul.

I hope Tales of Vesperia or Graces gets into our new "Unofficial Board Tourney Ranked List" at some point, though. Just the sheer equipment options there makes them fun.

Nah.  You can nom Revya (Soul Nomad & The World Eaters) if you'd like, and hope people would agree with an interp where he's rankable, but I wouldn't recommend it honestly.  But hey, I can definitely remember times people said things like "well, if this dueller is in this division I guess we're using this interp?  Okay, so I guess this happens"  Truth be told I don't think she's a very fun dueller anyway, but that's me.

My intent is to keep my data up to date as people play older games, and do new rankings from time to time, that sort of thing.  ToV was actually on the bubble for the criteria I used, so a little more interest in the game could easily get it in later.
(ToP oddly enough had less players than ToE, despite more people thinking it should be ranked.  My sample size was disappointingly small, but from the people who tend to vote but didn't weigh in at rankings... I think it would have ultimately failed to be ranked anyway.  Too many non-players.)

Hm.  We'll need to hash out whether Lulu is Heavy or Godlike.  My memory is that she ended the DL in Godlike, and got a handful of wins while utterly thrashing downgrade pools?

If so you'll need a different heavy Yoshi.

Lulu spent roughly two thirds of her DL history in Godlike. While her record there is unimpressive (2-6) it is still less lopsided than her Heavy record, which is 6-1. Her two appearances in H/G pools gave her a combined record of 7-3. In other words, while she is certainly within sight of the border, all experimental evidence points to her being on the Godlike side, and I would agree that is where she belongs.

EDIT: For Gate, yes, Kika is Heavy and Cathari is (probably) Middle.

Neph: I also don't see any reason you can't nom Don Mole, but CK should probably confirm this.

Cathari has a  near-WA4 boss-speed borderline 2HKO - however, a quick look at her durability scores pretty much seal her away from Heavy. She's sort of a weird twist on Kasumi, trading a lot of durability and ITE for S5 equip cheese, which is an overall losing trade, especially when you consider she's probably OHKOed by average magic damage she can't wall (Georg-level MDef+far below Georg HP).

EDIT: Of course, SD respect also walks the line for how fast you see her, TB speed and all that jazz.

Blah, meant to address that.

The actual characters ranked in the DL don't matter here, what matters is if the game itself is ranked.  So minor bosses (such as Don Mole), minor PCs we didn't rank (such as, as noted here, Cathari), and classes (so, say, an FFT Ninja) are all acceptable.

Pretty much the only thing I'm strongly opposed to is characters only in lesser-played remakes or the like.  So don't nom FFT Balthier or something.

For characters with multiple valid forms (like all the Pokemon), I'll just be putting them in as "(x) Series".  So don't worry about that aspect.  If there's significant division split, err in favor of the highest division: broadly speaking the characters who might have issues are from games where all their relevant games are well played (FE9 and FE10 have almost exactly the same player list, say)

Mei-ling is a borderline Heavy/Godlike both as a PC and as a boss. Changes some of the matches she wins or loses, but overall no issue. Revya has a highly legitimate case for unrankable Bluelike and the interp that sees her as anything below that strips her away from one of her fundamental gameplay features. See the difference?

EDIT: To make this clearer, what annoys the fuck out of me about Revya isn't necessarily the split: it's the fact that the only way to make her rankable involves arbitrarily removing one of her defining features as a PC, which, by all rights, has no reason to not translate other than "it makes her unrankable". It's like disallowing Blue the Overdrive/Stasis Rune trick just to make him not Bluelike.
