Thank you ! ! My first acceptance was a bit surreal, but receiving that call from Yale has turned me into the biggest ball of nerves ever. I figured Yale was just my -apply to apply- PhD. And now I actually have to make a choice and am trying to imagine simply how much stress and types of collegiality that I'll be able to handle. The stress part is the biggest problem. I haven't even heard from Northwestern yet, and if I have the opportunity to choose between all THREE, I am going to shit storms. No clue about UTA, but their online app system was ridiculous, and I know how to use app systems AND THEIR APP SYSTEM (omg too many conjunctions) WAS RIDIC.

It's mostly that my mom still can't wrap her head around how my sexuality pretty much stomped all her expectations regarding my social and affective future - expectations that were never -mine- to begin with. She also lost family members who -were- gay to hate crimes as well and ends up misdirecting her fears. That's the frustrating part - her refusal to realize that those issues don't stem from someone's sexuality, but from the environment's fucked up logic that arbitrarily dictates what is right and what is wrong about it.

Even more reason to see a therapist ASAP, honestly. For Yale, my diss would need to satisfy two departments and two primary faculty advisors instead of one. And New Haven is the pits. Going to train down and check it out more, but my ENFJ may make me spiral out of control there.

Sooo my laptop is currently in for repairs. Yesterday, one of my friends grabbed a GameCube controller and the wire tipped over a mug of tea onto the keyboard, which put the machine out of commission. (Yes, two of my favourite things, tea and Mario Kart, conspired to ruin my day.) Anyway due to a loophole in the warranty*, the Apple Store is going to attempt to repair it for free, but depending on just what part died it may or may not be worth it. Could be just the power supply, but it could also be the logic board at which point I'm probably better off getting a new machine. Good news is that they confirmed the hard drive survived at least.

*There is a defect in the casing of my model of Macbook which causes it to chip slightly on the edges. I've never given a shit. But apparently it was a big enough deal that Apple created a special lifetime warranty where they will replace the casing, which requires taking apart most of the machine anyway.

So yeah, don't expect me to be around too much in the next few days. My apologies to the Disquiet crew in particular.

The week was going pretty damn awesomely otherwise! Fire Emblem being awesome, Canucks on a big winning streak, multiple of my classes telling me I am awesome at my job.

Got a bit of a chance to speak with him privately, but the real fun begins tomorrow, when instead of being one of hundreds of fans (and technically being responsible for keeping fans moving, and the signing go by smoothly) I get to play Magic:The Gathering with him and 6 other people.

Point of fact: someone brought in a My Little Pony stylized version of Vin. He was thrilled! He signed the poster for the fan, who gave Brandon his own copy of it. (I also got a copy of it because I told the fan how cool that was and that I was a fan, too. Nyah.)

Last evening was really surreal. Super casual, just me and Andrew and two others, and Brandon Sanderson. Chatted about Magic (of course), and life in general, and the nature of touring and the different worlds you live in when you're famous. Asserted that Bay Area is best place ever.

In a nutshell: ate ridiculously expensive cheese and macarons on the publisher's tab, playing Magic: The Gathering on tables in the bar at the Ritz Carlton with a NYT bestselling author.

That's a sentence I enjoyed writing.

The major problem is that the -major- names in my choice areas reside at UTA/Northwestern; snowstorm's prevented a meeting with Kobena Mercer, but he is -"the man"- in my area, and at Yale. So I will see how hot/cold he is. There's nothing more miserable than working with an advisor who may be overspent and less enthusiastic about your personal projects. You go to grad school for a "love of wisdom," yeah, but you primarily go for specific letters of rec for jobs. Just having the -Yale- name, rather than -excited Mercer- name won't do much in my field. It's sort of a joke that Yale grads always get the first interview, but rarely get hired at top schools.
