165 just to be clear.

So wait, the chicken turned pink on the outside?  Or there was still pink internally?  If it's the latter then it was going to get you either way, assuming the aussie food industry is much like the usian (where something on the order of 75% of chickens have salmonella).  If it's the former I'm at a loss what the hell even happened to it but clearly it wasn't good.

So.  Last night I stuck on my metaphorical top hat to go get Culture (TM), which meant going to the opera (but the cheap seats.).  Never went to one before, figured I might as well expand my horizons.  And also see the source of many silly references by both Americans & Japanese writers, because I picked The Ring Cycle, favorite among the pretentious.  Specifically Die Walküre, the second one, which was supposed to be the best and also the one with "Ride of the Valkyries." I didn't realize it at the time, but the plot was all new to me; my rough knowledge of The Ring Cycle was parts 1 (evil dwarf, ring, god problems, #poorlifedecisions), 3 (hero, dragon, princess), and 4 (things go boomy, angst?  Götterdämmerung is a dang cool name though.).  I was expecting to see some, say, Valkyrie Profile or Xenosaga references, maybe with a side bit of Lord of the Rings.

No, instead I mostly got FIRE EMBLEM references, 'cause that's what the DL does.  This is probably old news to some, but for those who played the game, you'll recall that the Sacred Twin weapons of Renais were Siegmund (spear for Eph) and Sieglinde (sword for Eirika).  Well, Act I of Die Walkure opens with Our Hero Siegmund fleeing from hordes of foes.  He takes shelter in Sieglinde's house, and they're hitting it off, and Sieglinde's husband comes home, notes the two look similar, and asks that the stranger tell his story and all.  Seems that his twin sister was taken from him as a kid and his home burnt down, so he & his dad Valse were stuck being bandits in the wilderness, and then his dad disappeared, and he's had to kill a bunch of people and life sucks.  The husband is all "Yeah I was one of the people chasing after you, but since my wife foolishly gave you guest right, enjoy the night, we're fighting tomorrow.  Also get a sword."  Sieglinde, after knocking her husband out with a heavy drink, is all "Hey, we're twins, I was forced into this marriage against my will, but we each have the hots for each other, so I'm gonna sing about noble brows and such.  Also I think your dad Valse was really Odin and left this magic sword for you."  Which would make the two prince & princess, sort of.  Their love literally turns the winter into spring.  Briefly.

Quote
SIEGMUND
Wife and sister
you'll be to your brother.
So let the Volsung blood increase.

Then it's off for the hot & steamy sex scene offstage.

Basically what I'm saying is the twincest Eph-Eirika A-support in Japanese FE8 appears to be pretty much what the writers were thinking of here.  Ayup.  Go search up the deviant art images yourself, I'm not doing it for you.

Of course, afterward, there's weapon breakage into permadeath in the duel, but that's okay because in the next generation their son Siegfried will be the ultimate hero to sort things out.  Literally Fire Emblem.

All four phone screenings turned into phone interviews and have now turned into in-person interviews. One tomorrow, two on Friday, one on Tuesday next week. Hopefully I'll know whether I have a job by the end of next week.

Whew. This process is exhausting even when you have everything going for you. :|

First interview down.

It went fine.

They said I was overqualified. This makes sense, because it's a part-time summer internship. They are asking for someone who might be passingly familiar with a program I have direct training in and over a year's deep experience with. They said if they were to create a full-time position for managing that kind of stuff -- which they very well might do; things are shifting and growing quickly -- that they'd hire me in a heart-beat. As it is, the hiring manager basically gave me the polite "you're too good for this job, but thanks for slumming with us at the interview" which was worth a shrug. Made me wonder why on earth they invited me down if it was gonna be like that, but whatevs.

Tomorrow I have the more relevant interviews for actual, career-level full-time jobs. I am glad to have had the practice for one that was not as important to me. Inane questions like "tell me about yourself" and "where do you see yourself in 5 years" are the sort you just don't get to answer unless you're interviewing for jobs.

(Thanks, CT!)

If a person expresses interest in a job they're overqualified for, I say interview them.  There may be a specific reason that hasn't yet come to light why they may have a sincere interest.  For example: if you were planning on enrolling in school or going overseas in the fall, it would make perfect sense to shoot for a summer internship you were overqualified for.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

True, and I also expect that bit about being unsure when and whether they would be creating any more FT positions in the department was also a factor. In the end, it only benefits me to make a good impression, so I'm not really worried about it.

Was just kind of funny -- and anticlimactic -- to spend 2 hours talking to folks about how exciting what they were doing is, what a benefit the position would be for the work they're doing, and how awesome I would be in the position only to be told, rather abruptly, that they thought I was overqualified.

Two big interviews today, and these I am a little nervous about. I have never been very good at talking about myself. Which is great, because my interview style is a lot more focused on finding out what they're looking for, what they're hoping to fix, and whether I can be or do those things. Except for when the inevitable canned interview questions come up.

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"
"On Mars."

"What is your greatest strength?"
"About 15, but that was a lucky roll."

"What is your greatest weakness?"
"BAKED GOODS OMG, it's just so hard to resist a cookie fresh from the oven, you know?"

To Snowfire: The Siegmund/Sieglende thing was noted several times in the past.  Before playing FE8, I knew they were husband and wife (and parents of Sigurd/Siegfried), but it was later I learned they were Brother and Sister as well.  So yeah, either it was intended, or Japan recognized what they did after the fact, and decided to do some lampshade hanging by acknowledging it with the weapons.

That went so much better than expected. No dumb filler questions! (A little disappointing, since I didn't get to use joke answers, but oh well.)

The second interview went best of all. It went so well, we went an extra 45 minutes over the scheduled time, and they ended the meeting by saying, "So we don't usually do this, especially on a Friday afternoon, but everyone was just so excited we want to offer you the job."

It's a pretty great job, too. The team was great. The manager is a terrific guy -- not only does he interview very well, he seems to really care about employees' careers and fit, and their happiness. When we talked salary, the exchange of numbers went something like this:

Him: What were you thinking of, in terms of salary?
Me: What were you thinking of, in terms of budget?
Him: For the junior position, about $X-high $Y. For the senior position, high $Y to $Y+5. We see you as upper junior, lower senior.
Me: That's great! My number actually is $Y+3.
Him: Mm hmm. How about we say you start with the junior title, but start you at $Y+5?
Me: ... that sounds great!

Especially since $Y+5 represents a 50% raise on what I was making at my last job. Yessiree, I think I can make that work.

More important, though, I liked the people and I liked the job and it really sounded like they were building a solid department with great vision for the future. The most important thing to me, in trying to find a new job, is to find a place that really -fits-. And I do think there's room to do a lot of great stuff at this one.

Even when you consider that it's also Andy's company.

Apparently, they just -really- hate their hourly employees. >_>

--

So the HR director and the hiring manager are so excited, they gave me an offer letter not an hour after the interview wrapped up, and are working with me via email and phone this weekend to hash out the details in the hopes that I can sign the offer letter by end of day Monday and start work on May 20th.

Soooooo not what I was expecting from today. But I am so grateful. :D
