Did not manage to score SDCC tickets this year, despite trying REALLY DAMN HARD. Decided to come down to San Diego anyway, to visit friend who lives down here.

In random stroke of serendipity, vendor with whom I am working at my new job invites me and my friends down for dinner and drinks on the company, and oh by the way would you like to borrow my badge?

YES PLEASE.

Tomorrow is brief but glorious time INSIDE ComicCon, instead of just wandering around the convention center looking real sad.

Been run ragged.

Monday: Work, early preview of We are the Millers, dinner.
Tuesday: Work, beach day.
Wednesday: Work, bar with coworkers, dump off things at shelters & furniture donations.
Thursday: Work, Third Thurs @ Isabella, karaoke.
Friday: No work, but early leave of Boston for Natick house w/ 5 acres of land, bbq on hot day.
Saturday: Work, lunch with friend, movie: The Heat.
Sunday: finally cancelled on my friend.. flopped on the bed.

They won't let me not do things before I leave, and while it's great, it's such an energy sapper. No time to myself.

Zenny: best of luck.

Meep: congrats.

Fenrir: I've been there.  Hardest time of my life.  Raymond Chandler once wrote something like that true misery always looks like melodrama.  That was certainly the case for me.  I found myself naturally thinking about my situation with the language of poetry and metaphor, because I found that without those tools I wasn't equipped even to describe how bad I felt.  Even just to myself.  Anyway, here's hoping everything turns out for you the best it can.

*Blinks* Ouch Fenrir, hope it gets better. I know you were really  happy there. You're doing the right thing re: pulling yourself together though.

Seen on someone's shirt at the airport: "Essential NPC: do not rob, maim, or kill."

Probably a useful distinction to have while in Mexico. (Our resort was basically a transplanted bubble of 1st world safety though, and we did not leave it.)

Well, in addition to the usual tropical island paradise thing, this cruise trip totally makes up for how little karaoke I got to do in California. I have literally gotten to karaoke every night this week.

Also, the cruise has this particularly awesome free-pour bar called "The Alchemy Bar", where they mix everything from burned cinnamon, exotic fruit, shaved chocolate, rosemary, basil, olive oil, and of course every liquor known to man. It is like watching art in creation when they start mixing. I've known good bartenders before but -damn-. Roughly 75% of my pictures on this cruise are of the drinks I've gotten from there.

I'm doing a talent show tonight. Wish me luck!

I need to stop viewing the past with rose tinted goggles. It is easy to forget the very valid reasons I had for leaving where I was, and easy to think that going home would make me happy but it won't.

It's a good reminder.

It's a good reminder that all of the excuses I make are just that. Excuses.

Seize opportunities when they come, then strangle them dry and don't make that sacrifice be in vein.

What I want will never be in the United States. What I won't likely won't be in Japan. Home has no place for me and I'm OK with that. That's what I strove for, right?

Right.

From that I'm guessing coming back to America's been a mixed bag?

Also: is America so barren of what you need that it cannot provide?  Or just the America you call home?

Actually, this trip has been everything I needed it to be. It's been a lot of fun and partying but there are a number of realities that come hand-in-hand with the things I was doing here that I conveniently forgot.

America is not entirely barren of what I need but whether in New Mexico or elsewhere, at this point in my life I don't see myself settling down there without good reason.

You're fairly young to consider settling down as well.

Moving today. Exhausted from Newport Folk Festival..... f a n t a s t i c. And who'd a thunk there'd be more mansions in Newport than regular houses. . . obvious.. slight exaggeration here. Anyway, went Sat/Sun so I missed Feist on Friday. Father John Misty is annoying, but I like his music. I'm sure he shot up before the show. Favorite was Michael Kiwanuka, as expected -- Uganda, woo woo. Next best was Lord Huron, followed by a fun Lumineers show. Neyla is the cutest white woman I've ever seen. Adorable.

Yep. Moving.

Well, my long awaited speeding ticket came in the mail today.

They want 356 fucking dollars for my infraction. Plus some confusing wording about how I may or may not need to pay $61 more to take traffic school (which I may or may not have to do).

Motherfucker.

--

In unrelated news, NaNoWriMo has an early bird fundraiser, so I've topped my $300 so Andy and I can attend this year. (That's $300 I don't mind spending!) Added the usual link to my sig and to profile website link, feel free to drop a 100% US tax deductible donation if you are so inclined. I'll make a bigger post about it come October/November, but that's all you'll hear about it from me other than the signature.

Also feeling good about buying some school supplies for underprivileged kids in the area.

Yay for doing good.

So unexpected expenses thus far:

During DLC, Jenna had to shell out ~$1300 to fix the car, so she could drive down to LA to get a copy of her birth certificate(needed it now, takes 8 weeks to get by mail). Good thing we did, since what we knew wasn't working(cruise control) turned out to be not the only thing wrong. Good odds her BREAKS would have failed on that long trip if we hadn't taken it in.

Shortly after, cat goes to vet because he's vomiting every day. $500 for the vet to tell us that he doesn't know what's wrong. Will be another  $300 to get some test results once we can afford it. Thankfully, cat is no longer throwing up every day, so its waiting until next paycheck.

Get a notice that Jenna missed a court date due to a traffic violation and failure to pay the fine. We go "what the fuck, what fine?". Jenna calls the contact number, finds out they sent the notice of the violation(running a red light apparently) to the house we lived in...over two years ago. But apparently were able to send the notice that we hadn't paid so her license was suspended to the right address? $400 for the ticket + $500 for missing the court date, and it's not their problem that they sent it to the wrong address. They sent it! We didn't get it, so that's our fault.

Not unplanned, but $300 for child's band fees(band gets no money from school, 100% supported by parents...). Just came at a bad time. Putting it off is not an option, they won't let him in band if we don't pay now.

All told, that's $2700 in surprise expenses with another $300 in "we knew it was coming, but shit timing" + $300 more on the horizon. All within a 3 week span.

I do not have language strong enough for all of this.
