Canon in D is the Final Fantasy of classical music.  Every once in a while it comes back as something cool (Japanese guy playing a sped-up remix on guitar, for instance) but most of the time it's just dull and overhyped to hell, generally by people who don't actually know enough about music to tell that it's not that interesting.

EDIT:  Wow.  That comparison was scarily accurate now that I think about it.  I am awesome.

I don't use the GBA slot much myself; not like I'll be upgrading anyway since I prefer my DS to be larger thanks to my large hands.

I don't really like the analogy, actually.  FF is usually the series that tries crazy stuff (whether it fails like Junctions or succeeds like sphere grids), has 40 status effects instead of 10 for most JRPGs, and similarly higher numbers of skillsets, etc.

Cannon in D is just really simple and doesn't take any risks.  It's like...Twilight Princess or something.

The last time they tried to step out of their standard collection of tropes that basement virgins and kids without pubes think are so amazing, they gave us FF12, which didn't have a story for most of the game. Besides, all their ability systems? Coatracks. Coatracks are overplayed and uninteresting.

As with most things, I was going off the storytelling perspective, yes. 

If you want to go into the gameplay, then Canon is Dragon Quest pre-8, only replace the American fanbase with the Japanese fanbase.

The specs sheet on the JP website talks about DSi games separate from DS games - so there's at least going to be some in the future that don't work on DS/DS Lite (hopefully just stuff that uses the camera, or downloadable ones).  Stealth platform introduction ahoy.

So if you want both the future DSi games and any games that rely on the GBA slot like Pokemon, you'll need two systems.  Ugh.

The fact that they may be offering GBA games for purchase via download like they do with the present Virtual Console seems like a fair trade.  If you want to play your GBA library, old GBAs and DS's are likely not being magically turned into pumpkins, and this means that we have a realistic chance to see some GBA games that were never released over here given an official translation like they've done for the VC.  FE6 seems like the best candidate for this.

I find this vaguely amusing given that your example of the "last time" they experimented with storytelling is their most recent game.
